Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour
Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.
One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.
If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.
While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.
Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.
Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.

Cirque puts on amazing performances and I’ve seen probably 9 Cirque productions in total (6 of those have been the traveling productions). That said, perhaps my expectations were set too high from previous productions but this production didn’t live up to my expectations. That’s why I rated it “so so.” The individual performances are still very impressive but it just felt like this production did not have quite the variety of acts and it also felt like the acts were more abbreviated/shortened compared to other productions I’ve seen.
My husband bought tickets to see Corteo for my birthday...Best. Birthday. Gift. EVER!!! From the moment the show began, I was spellbound by the utter beauty of the set and costumes, the grace of the flying performers, the comedic timing of the giant and Clowness, and wanted so much to be a part of that world.
I have seen Cirque du Soleil shows before. They all have something that makes them unique. The entire show was awesome. I particularly enjoyed the audience participation part (even though I did not get to participate) when the lady in the balloons went out into the audience and floated above us by being pushed by the participants in the audience. It added a little something extra.
I can appreciate the amount of work that the entertainers put into the performance, but I felt like the entire show was extremely underwhelming. There wasn’t anything that I found spectacular. In between the acrobatic acts, there was filler routines that was pointless and mediocre. For the amount of money I spent on these tickets, I expected something more .
I love, love Cirque and have been to many of them but this was my least favorite. It was not as entertaining as the others. We actually left early because it was boring. Disappointed and would not recommend this one if you are used to the others with their high energy performance.
First cirque I saw was Nouvelle Experience...this was OK for basic Cirque, but not as grand...And the comic sections were a major disappointment...Just Meh...I really miss the tent, but I know they probably seat more people in an arena...Everything changes...
the show was EXCELLENT!!! a solid evening of entertainment, with amazing acts. after 30 years in stage production (costume designer, specializing in "magic"costumes), I'm pretty hard to impress, but, I always marvel at the precission of every aspect of Cirque du Soleil's performances....from the talented performers, to the transistion between acts, to the live musicians, to the functionality of the costumes. We've attended 4 of their shows (so far), and each one has been a thorough JOY!! thank you for BEING!!
The performers were like Olympic competitors; extremely muscular and agile. The woman who performed on the brass pole was a special highlight. And the chandelier ladies were fantastic.
20 years ago, I fell in love with CdS, and saw many shows while living in San Francisco. This was my first Cirque show in probably 10 years. I didn't know how much I needed it! We went with my partner's daughter, her husband and their 7 year old daughter who was spellbound the entire time. The stunts were not the most spectacular of all the shows I've seen, but that did not matter to any of us - we laughed, we cried, we thrilled to the daring, the pathos, how exciting it is to see live music performed, the beauty of dreamlike tableaux. I remembered why Cirque matters so much - it takes you to a place of remembering the beauty of human experience translated into art. Our granddaughter, who has been going through a rough patch emotionally was so happy afterwards, full of appreciation for a beautiful l spring day.
As always Cirque de Soleil doesn’t disappoint. Great acrobatics and showmanship. Love the little girl with the balloons skit.
I had low expectations after some of the other reviews, but this performance blew us away! Our whole family enjoyed it, from young children through grandparents. It was very entertaining, beautifully produced, and a pleasure to watch. The stunts were impressive, there were comical and participatory parts of the show. We couldn't really follow all of the story but it didn't matter, we still enjoyed watching it. Would recommend.
It was so entertaining for all ages in my group, ages 3 thru 63! The only complaint I have is not on the show , but the other people around me insisting on videoing most of the show. The light from their cameras made such an obstructing light between me and the stage that it was difficult to see the show. I think phones should be banned in order that all get the full enjoyment of the show.
I had tickets to see a Cirque performance in April of 2020...and of course this little thing called coronavirus happened and it cancelled life. Fast forward 4 years and I was so ready to see this! I loved everything about it! Thank you for coming to Greensboro... I look forward to seeing so many more performances!
I loved the show. It didn’t seem like 2 hours it’s so entertaining and the way the artists portrayed the show it was one of a kind experience. I would really recommend it.
I enjoyed the show, but I would have liked more interaction with the audience.
It is great to see what amazing things people can do put on display. The performers are truly inspiring and fun to watch.
Service from the Coliseum staff was really good, everyone was kind and very friendly. The Show was out of this world amazing! … could not look away and we enjoyed every second of it. Everything from the stage, the music, the story, the characters, and the costumes was absolutely beautiful! Would definitely watch the show again and will definitely look forward to watching many other Cirque du Soleil shows!
This one was not the caliber that we saw in Charlotte a few years ago. The acrobat’s were very good, but the overall theme was boring
The best thing ever for a family outing-better than LION KING, my prior fav Entertainment that immerses young and old in a whimsical show full of astonishing feats and amazing performances. The pace and continuity holds every one’s attention. It’s astounding!
