Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour
Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.
One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.
If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.
While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.
Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.
Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.
It was so so Didn’t bring emotions to my throat as other shows have
The show was great, however the additional charges were unexpected, we did not know that the parking was extra, they charged $30.00!!! to park for a less than 2-hour show, plus we could not download the tickets to our cell phone so they charged us $10.00 more to print the tickets at the box office. If they were going to charge for parking why did they not say that upfront before we purchased the show tickets, and if they have to print tickets why don't they tell you upfront it's an additional $10.00. I find this to be deceitful and misleading. WE had no choice but to pay or else we don't get to see the show.
We have seen the acts in Vegas so we were excited to see this one, it did not disappoint.
It was an extraordinary show. Acrobatics were amazing. Entertainers and Story line was powerful.
Show was funny, I liked the audience interaction when they sent the little woman into the crowd on the balloons. I also liked how they spoke in English and Italian. It was an amazing show, will go again’
Zero stars. This is the second time I saw Cirque du Soleil at the same arena. The set up this time was dismal! I was literally looking forward to see black curtains. If I turned my neck and body to see the tiny stage. I was in the other seats space. The sound system was muffled at best. The theme of the show was not identifiable from my seat either. Zero stars but I had to select 1 to submit this review.
Beautiful performances Cirque Du Soleil always delivers fabulous shows.
The athleticism and grace and story line were over the top! We had three generations (including a teen) enthralled beginning to end.
My fourth Cirque and easily the best one so far! They set a really nice ambiance and I wanted to go back for a second show!
We attended in the offseason and even though the seats were mostly filled, there was not a long line of traffic in get in and out.
I have been to 6 Cirques across the country and felt this show was not one of their best. It lacked a flow that was easy to understand. There were just a few NEW performances. It seemed very "dated"and lacked the energy of the past shows I have seen. Disappointed.
First thing, everyone in the show is amazingly talented. Not a single complaint about their incredible skill and abilities. The stage production was minimal but effective. I would recommend reading what the story is BEFORE you see it, because it's not entirely clear while watching. More importantly, if you have never seen a Cirque show, this will be an amazing experience. If, like me, you have seen several Cirque shows in the past, I couldn't help feeling like this one was more of the same. The framing was different but the show was basically the same. I don't mean that as a knock, but I left underwhelmed by that.
Parking was expensive, no real pre show which I am use to with cirque. It was very comical and fast moving.
What a great show… The athleticism and creativity was amazing! Our family was fully present the entire time… No checking our phones or getting distracted. Bravo!
The show was amazing!!!! My husband and I been to 4 different shows and always leaves us in a state of amazement. I am truly a fan! My bucket list is to go to all the shows. Thank you for an amazing work the people do.
It was dull and slow. Amateur hour on stage. The costumes were forgettable. Each act was an only a few minutes long with singing in between. I felt like I was at a high school play. We didn’t even stay until the end. Extremely disappointed especially for $129 each.
Show was fabulous. Absolutely amazing physically of the actors.
My daughter, granddaughter and I attended and was amazed at the show. Definitely had a wonderful time. The acrobatics., the music, some laughter and awe. Highly recommend seeing this!
Enjoyed the immense talent of all the performers. Look forward to a future show.
Too expensive for a very poor performance did not like it and the sits were so bond that you couldn’t pass trough for you to get your sits
