Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour
Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.
One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.
If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.
That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.
While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.
Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.
Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.
Good show. Has some flow issues at some points. Needs to be more dynamic. Sometimes it gives the impression of some improvisation or lack of excitement.
The athleticism of the performers is amazing. Some of the moves were pretty dangerous. I had no idea what the story was mostly due to the heavy accents. The little girl behind me kept asking her mother what they were saying. LOL. Honestly, I didn't go for the story so that didn't bother me too much. I am not going to spoil it, but there is something super cool that happens with balloons. Worth going. Great family entertainment. .
A beautiful story of Corteo's imaginary death. You would think of it to be a sad affair, but the Italians brought the party to celebrate his life. It's a must see. Our 13th show by the cirque and counting!
I had seen a different production several years ago in Montreal and was in awe of it. Consequently, I was thrilled when it was coming to Raleigh and brought tickets back in May. What a disappointment this was. There was hardly anything that you haven't seen numerous times. Plus, a lot of the dialogue seem to be in Italian and no one could understand what was being said. The ringmaster acted like a buffoon and was annoying. I am sure that those who had never seen it before would really like it but to me, it wasn't worth the money.
It was a really great show, very interesting and a lot of talent!
The passion of the music and the performers were magical!
This was my 4th experience witha Cirque du Soleil performance. I found Corteo no where near as entertaining as past shows. I was always in awe of past shows, this one had no real awe factor and at times even boring. I left with my granddaughters 15 min early.
Cirque du Soliel never disappoints. Amazingly talented actors, phenomenal costuming, visual eye candy. Corteo was a beautiful story. Unfortunately the acoustics in BoJangles Coliseum were so garbled the music component was lost to the audience. What a shame. I saw Echo last year in the big tent, O in Las Vegas and the music added so much to the experience.
Seeing a Cirque du Soleil show has been.on my bucket list for years. And boy, Corteo did not disappoint! From the storyline to the acrobatics, Corteo was a show filled with fun.
This show was so much better than I could have expected. CIrque has always been impressive, but this was so much fun!
this was my first cirque du soleil show and i absolutely recommend you go watch it. i enjoyed every minute of it.
absolutely amazing. mind blowing. great for the whole family. my 11 year old was mesmerized!
Performance was very enjoyable. The troupe was excellent!! Had a great time
I had been wanting to see any Cirque Du Soleil show for a long time. I bought tickets right away when they went on sale in Charlotte. The show itself was amazing. Highly recommend going to see it. The things they do are impressive, the show was interactive at moments and made us laugh many times. Definitely a 10/10. We had a great time.
Really enjoyed the new production of CdS Corteo. Missed some of the aerials other productions had but overall had a fantastic time! Beautiful production, music, costumes, and athletes!. Don’t miss it!
As the title states, unmatched athletic ability on display here. My hands were sweating multiple times due to the death defying things they were doing so artistically on stage. The story left a bit to be desired though. Based on the funeral of a circus member, but deviated many times from that theme in slightly hard to follow ways. Overall, it didn't matter because the athletes are the stars of the show. And they did not disappoint. Definitely will go again!
Corteo is a great show to see— the premise, the cast, and artistry all culminate in a transcending experience. This is my second Cirque show, and I cannot hype this enough- go see it. NOW!
I have attended about 12 Cirque du Soleil events over the years all across the US. While my preference would be the ones that have permanent venues, I will say that Corteo at the Bojangles Coliseum was extremely well done. I loved the round stage and being able to view from all angles. The production was great and there were some surprises that I did not expect which made it very different from others that I have attended. Bravo!
The entire logistics were very organized, the food area was very good, the attention of everyone in that area was great, the show was masterful, everything was too beautiful.
Went to Cirque du Soleil : Corteo as a Family Event. Paid extra for Platinum seats. Performance for many skits was very good, some not as much. Arial performances were awesome, but some the skits that were based on acting, were poorly execute, with many appearing sloppy and barely rehearsed. We had a difficult time following a couple of them. We loved the acrobatics, and all of the tumbling and flying. Definately not a sold out performance on a Friday night, so maybe ticket prices are too high? Recommend as a Family activity for something different.
