About Cincinnati Music Festival
Cincinnati is proud of its rich musical history. Most notably, the Queen City was home to the storied label King Records, whose imprint, Federal, issued the hit single "Please, Please, Please" from James Brown's first band, the Famous Flames.
It's quite fitting, then, that Cincinnati is also home to the Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G, one of the longest-running (and most successful) R&B and soul concerts in the U.S. Cofounded by promoter Dino Santangelo and George Wein initially as a jazz-focused festival, the multi-day event now consistently draws the genre's biggest names. For example, Brown eventually performed at the event — as have other soul and R&B luminaries, including Whitney Houston and her cousin, Dionne Warwick, along with Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Al Green, Maxwell, and Ella Fitzgerald.
The Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G dates back to 1962, when it launched as the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival. The inaugural year of the fest boasted amazing talent — to name a few players, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Sonny Rollins. The event moved around a bit in its early years, first from the Carthage Fairgrounds to Crosley Field — where, in 1964, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin, and Dizzy Gillespie performed — and later from there to Riverfront Stadium, before the event eventually settled in to its current location of Paul Brown Stadium. Along the way, the concert expanded its focus to include soul, R&B, and even hip-hop, which grew its audience even more.
The festival also became known for many years as the Macy's Music Festival before being rechristened the Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G in 2015. What hasn't changed, however, is a commitment to booking top-notch talent that reaches multiple generations of music fans in Cincinnati and beyond.

Overall the festival was really great! all of the performances were good and the mood was good. I loved the fact that you could bring food from the vendors inside of the stadium with you. I guess my only complaint would be how the stage was set up. the stage was extremely hard to see unless you were sitting dead center. We had pretty good seats but the angle made it difficult to see the stage. However, there were plenty of huge screens so we didnt miss anything! we had a great time!
Many people were taking over other guest seats, and did not want to remove when guest were arriving. Had to get guest services involved.
All of the entertainers were excellent on Friday night! Couldn't see the stage from the seats we had in the Club level. Had to watch it on the big screen.
I would like to comment on the Macy's Music Festival 2013. It was a nice musical weekend Friday and Saturday all performances were timely and done tastefully. Until Saturday night around 11:15 pm when the performer KEM left the stage. The concert goers in Cincinnati, Ohio waited on R. Kelly until 1am. We only received one explanation during our almost two hour wait time, that it was a delay. R. Kelly finally approached the stage around 1am with no apology all he had was his pompous blown up persona sang the melodies of his songs, then decided to walk off the stage after complaining that his fans weren't close enough to him. He came back to perform for another hour singing only one song to completion, all the other songs were melodies once again. Honestly if he would of apologized for his lateness it may have been better for his fans. I would like to just say that he never has to come back to Cincinnati, Ohio to perform, "he's not welcome in my eyes."
Just moved to Cincy and This was my first time attending the Music festival and it far exceeded my expectations. Not only was the line-up awsome the overall atmosphere reminded me of my parents when they had Blue light in the basement parties back in the 70's. Wasn't my first time seeing Maze and Frankie Beverly but they were awsome as ususal. Same for Charlie Wilson! Kem and Ledisi were on firrre! Will attend every year!
The weather cooperated and the stars aligned for two wonderful nights. I had good friends, good music and the audience was the best. Fantastic job in crowd control, whoever organized the event deserves a lot of praise for creating such a wonderful environment for us. Plan to come year after year.
The festival was great. It was the 50th Anniversary! This was my second year attending and I am looking forward to next year.
I had a great time as always looking forward to attending next year. Love the way the city opens up and make sure everyone has a great time. More excitment when the Reds are in town, but was easier to get a room.
We really enjoyed ourselves this year, and can not wait until next year's event. This has began to be a yearly thing for my group of girls since 2007.
Truly a concert! Would pay to see this particular line up again! Made me fall in love all over again!
I have been attending the jazzfest for 4 years straight now and I have to say I enjoyed this year the most!
I went again this year to see Charlie Wilson but REALLY enjoyed all the performers.....Eric Benet and KEM.....OMG! Ledisi did a great job as well.
despite the rain, good coverage, enjoyed Eric benet and Tom Joyner makes a fantastic moderator
Kem always lives up to, and exceeds my expectations!!! However Charlie Wilson puts on a production, his show was off-the-hook.. Would love to see a show with Kem, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, and Frrankie Beverly. I really had a fantastic time on Friday night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Despite the rain Friday kem, Eric benet ,Monica and ledsi made it worth wild. Saturday the ojays were unforgettable. I'm definitely there next year.
The crowd was mature and orderly, friendly. The music had me out of my seat most of the night. Kem was also awesome. Can't wait to see the lineup next year! The only annoyance was the constant "weed" smoking in the stadium.
After spending a year of bad concerts in Chicago where artists either don't show up (Carl Thomas & Kem) or can't sing (Ronald Isley) or get too high and have the audience waiting for hours to get on stage and then the performance has to be cut short due to rules of noise violations in Illinois (Erika Buda). etc. etc. The Cincinnati Music Fest was simply awesome, Amazing and just TOP notch. Every performer was simply superb. Exception was Frankie Beverly, which he appeared to be sick and couldn't hit those notes as he had in the past, but he made the best ever attempts to step it up and for that I am very satisfied. I like many others have seen him perform many times and we know why his performance has to be last. He is and will always be the king. Now he must get some rest and fight whatever illness that is taking over his body so that he can return with full strength. Charlie Wilson just totally outstanding. I have seen him several times before, but this time he simply has stepped up his game. I thank him for starting off with Party Train. That was brilliant. He never song Party Train and to add it in is the best ever. He must have listened to his audience and observed some Janet Jackson concerts or something cause he was amazing. Ojays are just flawless. They are always fantastic. Walter Williams should have been my Husband :-)...... Eric Benet was great. I just wish he could have song some more of his songs. KEM is always good, but I have seen him in a smaller setting (Tom Joyner cruise -2009) and now I know why he likes the smaller stages. This is my 3rd time experiencing him, once on small stage and twice on a large stage and he tends to be so much more intimate on a smaller stage because he has time to sing all of his own songs. Many of us would have liked him to sing his own music, but I guess he thinks that he has to step it up in a large audience and sing other artists songs. I guess that's what old school has on the new school is that old school has made so much more music that they don't have sing anyone else's songs. Jahiem is always very personable, but I think the crowd was too large for him to move around like that. For once I would just like him to sing "I'm not leaving w/o you" all the way out, instead of moving around in the crowd. He has an ole school flare and has made a lot of music now. I jump to buy whatever he makes, but I would like to see him stay on stage longer. Kathy Wade was the best ever surprise entertainer that added both joy and class. Temps were awesome. Everyone was TOP Notch!!!! This was my 1st Cincinnati Music Festival and I plan to make this one of my annual trips moving forward. Lastly some complained about there being two stages and not being able to see if they sat on the opposite side. Well, I was just fine with it because I understood that two stages makes things move much faster or we wouldn't been there all nite, plus I never sit down doing a great performance. I just walked to the other side and Jammed. I like that everything started on-time.....
WOW, had a blast at the music fest this weekend. I went to see Eric but really enjoyed Kem and the others as well. Next year we plan on going as a group so I can hang out with my sisters and really have fun. It's something you should experience once
All groups were wonderful!!!! Midnight Starr, The O'jays, Jaheim, and Frankie Beverly and Maze did an OUTSTANDING job.!!!!!
