About

About Cincinnati Music Festival

Cincinnati is proud of its rich musical history. Most notably, the Queen City was home to the storied label King Records, whose imprint, Federal, issued the hit single "Please, Please, Please" from James Brown's first band, the Famous Flames.

It's quite fitting, then, that Cincinnati is also home to the Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G, one of the longest-running (and most successful) R&B and soul concerts in the U.S. Cofounded by promoter Dino Santangelo and George Wein initially as a jazz-focused festival, the multi-day event now consistently draws the genre's biggest names. For example, Brown eventually performed at the event — as have other soul and R&B luminaries, including Whitney Houston and her cousin, Dionne Warwick, along with Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Al Green, Maxwell, and Ella Fitzgerald.

The Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G dates back to 1962, when it launched as the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival. The inaugural year of the fest boasted amazing talent — to name a few players, Louis Armstrong, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, and Sonny Rollins. The event moved around a bit in its early years, first from the Carthage Fairgrounds to Crosley Field — where, in 1964, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin, and Dizzy Gillespie performed — and later from there to Riverfront Stadium, before the event eventually settled in to its current location of Paul Brown Stadium. Along the way, the concert expanded its focus to include soul, R&B, and even hip-hop, which grew its audience even more.

The festival also became known for many years as the Macy's Music Festival before being rechristened the Cincinnati Music Festival Presented by P&G in 2015. What hasn't changed, however, is a commitment to booking top-notch talent that reaches multiple generations of music fans in Cincinnati and beyond.

    Good job

by Grundyh on 7/30/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

I thought the show was enjoyable overall. There were some low spots , it needs to be kept upbeat. Artists like the Temptations and O' Jays are the back bone of a show like this not to mention Kem and Charlie Wilson. More headliners for a show of this caliber will put it over the top! Tom Joyner was Great! Are DVD's available they should be .

All of the Artists were great

by Nish57 on 7/30/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

Everyone put on a good show, however, I was a little disappointed that Kem didn't sing more of his own songs. His tribute to others was a nice touch, but I didn't come to hear him sing other people hit songs!

Great mix of old and new

by JLMOG on 7/30/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

I had a wonderful time at the Macy's Music Festival in Cincinnati. It was everything i had hoped and more. Frankie Beverly is still going strong at 65. The O'Jays stole the show with some of their greatest hits. Jaheim set the stage for every man in the house by singing his sexy love songs to get the women in the mood. it was a wonderful night. Worth every penny.

    Had a Great time

by Gmicky1 on 7/30/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

Had a great time at the concert. I loved the Eric Benet, sang for his life, the Temptations were awesome, the O Jays were timeless, Ledisi made want to buy her CD's Kem was off the chart, and Frankie Beverly and Maze were super GREAT. However, New school artists slow down the conert. We come to party and to be entertained. New school has very little skills in entertaining. Overall i had a blast.

    Macy's Music Festival

by babykat on 7/29/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

This two day show was excellent! Charlie Wilson (& Gang) put on the most amazing show I have seen in years. It was a real SHOW. Cincinnati was very welcoming and meeting people throughout Ohio and the midwest was fabulous. I think it's great that this has been a part of Cincinnati history for the past 50 years. All of the artists put on exceptional shows as well; especially Kem, Jaheim, O'Jays. Just amazing!

    Best concert EVER!

by GenesGirl on 7/29/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

I surprised my husband with tickets to this event. It was raining as the concert started, but that did not dampen the spirits of the crowd. As each act finished you kept thinking that the next one could not be better, but each time, it was! I can't wait to go back next year and take my daughters.

by QiQi77 on 7/29/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

We were slightly discouraged by the rain that came through Friday. However the storm passed, and the music continued. Ledisi is full if energy, as well as Kem and Eric B. Over all, the entire show was fantastic! Thank u!

    Great

by ChelleFoster on 7/29/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

This was the first time that I attended this concert. It was an enjoyable event and a great weekend get-a-way with my friends. Friday night was my favorite of the two nights. I was somewhat concerned about Frankie Beverly's voice. I pray for his healing and strength.

    Macy's Music Festival

by Marcellena on 7/29/12Paul Brown Stadium - Cincinnati

The venue was excellent for an outdoor concert setting. The line up for Friday night was exceptional and some performances were outstanding!( Ledeci, Kem and Charlie Wilson!!!) All of the other performers should have just stayed at home. On the other hand, the crowd was a little too ghetto with the weed smoking, and outlandish outfits.
