About

This event brought back so many memories. I am Cuban and grew up appreciating this type of afro-cuban jazz fusion. He played songs from his latest work. This was an amzing display of creativity and pure talent. I would recommend this show to anyone that loves and sees music as a perfect expression of the soul.

  • Fast Hands Chucho!

by Elefante on 11/22/12Lila Cockrell Theater - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show. The group consisted of a traditional Jazz trio (piano, bass, drums) with additional percussion. Extremely talented musicians who obviously love what they do. Really felt like a group performance rather than the common "Hired a bunch of Jazz guys, gave them sheet music and now we're on tour..." that you get with a lot of big jazz names. Highly recommended show for sure. Only negative would probably be attributed to the venue and not the musicians themselves. Sound was ok, but perhaps in a smaller venue the sound would've been better in my opinion. In other words, it didn't sound loud enough for me.

  • Amazing Show

by Musicworld on 2/18/12Walt Disney Concert Hall - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

This was some of the best music heard in a while. Chucho Valdes and his group were amazing. The level of musicianship was extraordinary for this day and age. No matter if your taste runs to classical, rock or jazz, the Afro Cuban Messenger musicians were among the best I have heard. Great texture and originality.Music complex and compelling. Hard to stay in one's seat. Poncho Sanchez and his group were also very excellent. Very entertaining and high level of skill. "Local boy come home" theme made us all feel good. Good show, just not quite as surprising as the great Chucho Valdez. Sound in Disney Concet Hall served Valdez better then Snachez due to the placement of the band further back on the stage.

both artist were wonderful we loved the music and show but it was not long enough cause we wanted the show to last longer. The concert hall was very warn and hot need more air conditioning and the seats have bolts underneath the armrest that protrude out and the riped my girlfriends shaw so be careful if you are wearing something nice and thin cause it will get caught and ruined please fix the seats.

  • Chucho gave a mastercalss

by pianojazz8s on 2/10/12Jazz Cafe At Music Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Chucho Valdes and his amazing Cuban band gave a masterclass on the breadth of style and literature possible from a "jazz band" or "latin band". Chucho flowed from continent to continent; from century to century, and across multiple styles of music from baroque to 19th century Russian symphonic quotes, to ragtime and stride, swing, be-bop, post bop, west African and all sorts of Cuban and Latin styles. While piano, bass and horns played traditional jazz style on one song, the three percussionists were cruising in Latin poly-rhythms. Chucho's effortless technique was reminiscent of Art Tatum's! It was jazz masteclass we were honored to witness.

Chucho brought it all out for the show, horn section, three percusionists, amazing basist, on of course Chucho on the keys. Great variety of sound and influences from Afro-Cuban tribal drums and vocals to American blues inspired jazz piano. Plus two and a half encores!
