About

The duo of Valdés and D’Rivera is one of two virtuosos of our time. The band sounded great and the acoustic of the Hall is second to none. Bring more Latin Jazz to Town Hall!!!!

My friend and I had such a good time that night. Chucho and Paquito were amazing. And the other musicians were too. The energy of the theater that night was unbelievable. And the love of the audience was match by the love of the musicians who came back to play an extra piece for us.

Chucho Valdes never disappoints. He’s one of the best jazz piano players alive. Paquito D’Rivera enlivened the concert throughout not only with his saxo but also his interaction with the public. It was a wonderful night. People should be allowed to take photographs with their iPhones. It is disrupting to try to prevent them from doing so.

  • Simply the best pianist of Latin jazz, including African Lat

by Botaco on 10/22/19The Soraya (The Valley's Center for the Performing Arts) - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

I haven been fortunate to see him live four times, once as a solo piano player. Each time it was like hearing it for the first time. Like fine wine, he has seemed to get even better over time.

  • Fantastic

Chucho and his quartet were incredible. Chucho is a true virtuoso on the piano and to think he's almost 80. I wish him many more years of great music.

  • Review of Chucho Valdes and his Trio: Jazz Bata

by Frankie on 2/12/19Laurie Auditorium - San AntonioRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was a little difficult to enter via car as there was one way in but the parking was ample. The venue was also a little warm and stuffy. But of course we were there to hear the wonderful Chucho Valdes and he didn’t disappoint. The trio showcased powerful musical skills with the emphasis on percussion. I always enjoy going to Trinity’s Laurie Auditorium which a great place to hear music with great acoustics.

  • Amazing, a lot of fun and interesting

Everything was nice; sounds, seats, nice theater. I like to see Chucho Valdez performance again but with other good bands.

I've seen Chucho Valdes in concert a handful of times throughout my life. His talent, his shows, and his normally accompanying group of musicians - namely Irakere - have performed beyond expectation each time. On May 20th, I witnessed Chucho Valdes perform, but it was not at all what I and others expected. I had no idea this was a solo performance. While I take nothing away from Mr. Valdes' talent, suffice it to say that I and others expected him to perform with his group. This wasn't the case that night and it was greatly disappointing.  Why was it not specified that this was a solo performance? Most people surely expect to see him perform with a group as he normally does. It's no wonder there was a gentleman snoring in the row behind me. I myself waited outside the theater as of 8:40pm. I noticed others leaving soon thereafter.  Had I clearly known this was a solo venue I would not have paid $127 for the two tickets I purchased. While $127 will not break my bank account, I definitely did not receive what I paid for.   FYI, this was my first time visiting the Luckman. It may be the very last as I will not be quick to trust future venues as I did tonight.

  • Chucho Valdés was incredible!

My wife and I were transported to another world with Chucho Valdés' artistry, virtuosity and the sheer beauty of his music. What a treat! The influence of other great jazz pianists such as Art Tatum and Thelonius Monk was also apparent in his playing. Chucho is in a league by himself. He plays as if he had three or four hands. I hope he comes back soon.

This was by far one of the most exciting performances I have ever attended in the world of music. I heard Chucho in Cuba in 2012 and that is when I fell in love with his music. The concert was the greatest display of talent and passion for a genre of music that reaches the heart and soul of the listener. I hope this will be repeated yearly!
