Cheap Trick - fabulous as always.
by Flog714 on 5/2/10Koka Booth Amphitheatre At Regency Park - CaryRating: 5 out of 5This was my 48th Cheap Trick concert, so I may be somewhat jaded in my response. I have seen them everywhere from very small venues (The Mission in Raleigh, Cat's Cradle in Carrboro), to outdoor stadiums as headliners. This was the best show I've seen since the 25th Anniversary Show in their hometown of Rockford, Illinois in 1999. The really have seemed to open up the set list in the last several months, and I don't know if that is related to Bun E. not being on tour, but we are all luckier for it.
We were treated to some real gems, from an opener of "Way Of The World" (which I can never recall ever hearing live), to an absolute killer version of Need Your Love that had me in goose bumps from the opening chords of Tom Petersson's gorgeous Waterstone 12-string "Peacock" bass, the most beautiful instrument he's ever toted to the stage. They even dipped deep into the bag for the tender Ballad Of TV Violence, from their debut album in 1977. California Man was also awaken from a set list membership coma, as it should be.
They mixed in 4 songs from their current album "The Latest", the best of which was "Sick Man Of Europe", two minutes of killer power pop featuring the aforementioned Petterson dive bomb bass runs. Throw in the "Big 3" - I Want You To Want Me, Surrender, Dream Police, and my favorite encore closer "Auf Wiedersehen", and it was certainly a show to remember.
Robin was in top form, demonstrating again he is one of the best, and most underrated vocalists in rock history, and Rick Nielsen was his usual playful self, ever the showman, but also proving he can really tear thru some power leads, as he did in Baby Love To Rock and Need Your Love. With Daxx Nielsen on on drums, they didn't really miss a beat, pun intended.
After seeing shows like this, they should never be relegated to opening for anybody, and I hereby swear off future concerts when they are relegated to opening for inferior bands, which is just about everyone this side of AC/DC.
RnR HOF, stay true to your word, these guys belong there. Last night was proof.
