Cheap Trick still the best
by Dan0311 on 12/6/10Billy Bob's - Fort WorthRating: 5 out of 5Cheap Trick has a pretty wide fan base and their show strives to include them all. A couple of cuts from the first (and one of the best) albums for us rockers, a few power ballads for the "Flame" and "Voices" fans, and a scattering of new material for...uh...them I guess. For me, the golden age of Cheap Trick was the first four albums, and the material performed from those was done with enthusiasm and easy skill. The thing that makes this band so awesome is the way they take unfamiliar and "less loved" material and absolutely sell it. Rick Nielsen has never looked more comfortable on a stage, and technically, his guitar tone was the best its ever been. For gear heads, the parade of classic instruments (mixed in with some his outrageous custom jobs) was a pleasure to watch. But he got great sounds out of all of them and played with gusto while making it look easy. He moves a little slower, but he still moves more in one show than Eric Clapton has moved in his entire career. :-) Robin Zander's voice is still a force of nature...just lose the hats and shades. For fifty bucks a ticket I want to see eyes. He is one of the best singers ever, period, and I have never heard his voice sound weak or strained, no matter how much he shreds it every night. Tom Peterson was his usual mild self...the workman caught up in the hurricane, smiling and looking happy to be there. Missed Bun E Carlos on drums, hope he returns soon. Song selection, for me, didnt have enough off the first four albums, but I could say that about most bands that have been around awhile. But on some of the newer stuff, Tom and Rick would take extended instrumental breaks and conducted a tutorial about how you build excitement in a song so that at the end you were standing on the table pumping your fist in the air shouting "what the hell is this song?"
Plenty of quantity, plenty of quality, not too loud, not too soft, Just enough of everything to keep just about everybody happy. Boy, you would think they have beeen doing this awhile. Always a great show and it you like the records, you'll love 'em live.
Below is a list of what they played followed by a list of what I wish they had played (and have played lately at other shows) Guess they change it up for every gig.
