About

Indie-pop/electro duo Capital Cities has blossomed from a couple of Los Angeles-based jingle writers who met on Craigslist to a ticket-selling sensation on tour with other of-the-moment indie acts like Fitz and The Tantrums and Alt-J. It’s virtually impossible to turn on a Top 40 radio station without hearing the band’s danceable synthpop single, “Safe and Sound,” not to mention the promotional campaigns it pops up in for brands like HBO, Smart Car and Microsoft.

The pair, comprised of composers and songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, unveiled their first studio album, “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery,” in the summer of 2013 via Capitol Records/Lazy Hooks. On tour to promote the indietronica release, Capital Cities added bassist Manuel Quintero, guitarist Nick Merwin, drummer Channing Holmes and trumpeter Spencer Ludwig to the live shows, which included sold-out concerts at New York City’s Irving Plaza, as well as two nights at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre.

I would go again and again and again!

by Ashgan on 7/28/15The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

I've been to quite a few concerts of all different genres. But this concert, at the fair of all places, was my favorite! Capital Cities is just amazing. The way they instantly drew out the happy dancing kid in us all was epic. To see the ENTIRE crowd going crazy was so much fun. The interaction with the crown was great and their finale dance party was the icing on the cake.

    Excellent show. Great crowd!

by janalleycat on 7/28/15The Pacific Amphitheatre - Costa Mesa

Having the crowd be that into a concert always helps. It was my son's first concert and Capital Cities did a great job. Just wish they would have played Chasing You.

    We just love Capital Cities!

by Anonymous on 1/31/15Birds Nest Phoenix Open - Scottsdale

The show was awesome! They are such a great, upbeat and classy group. The only reason we did not give the show a 5 star rating is for the length of their gig. At about 1 hour, it was way too short and left us wanting more, especially at the Bird Nest, where it is not that easy to get to.

    so awesome!

by ExceptionElle on 11/24/14Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Being from Santa Cruz and now living in Tahoe, it was shocking to me that I had never even been to OAKLAND before, letalone to the FOX before! With close to $100 million in renovations and with our amazing Telegraph Room upgrade, the venue was astounding. We enjoyed the intricate details of walls and ceilings etc so much that I found myself staring at a balcony or statue before getting pulled back into the music! Captial Cities absolutely KILLED it! So awesome... so so fun! We danced our butts off, sang along to every word (sorry to those around us), and enjoyed great company of random strangers throughout the evening (Hi Kevin and Rachel!). Night Terrors and Scavenger Hunt were super cool! Watching from our original seats in the Loge was spectacular, but we stayed most of the night behind the sound booth in our VIP upgraded section. Being 4'4" tall, the view was SWEET! Looking right over the heads of the crowd, with private bar and bathroom, hors d'ouevres... what a treat! Thanks to our wonderful bartender Eva and everyone we met! The Den was a great place to start, too!

Go see Capital Cities whenever you get a chance!

by Onerepubfan on 11/23/14Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I've seen Capital Cities twice now and each time they are so so so good. There was a lame xbox intro which kind of indicates them selling out, but other than that, the light set up was pretty awesome, their music is fun, so much energy, and great dance party time!

Good concert, good venue, bad commercial

    by Rck100 on 11/23/14Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The two opening acts were pretty good but should stick to original material. Capital Cites has such a good sound they should also stick to original material. Also, drop the commercial for Forza at the beginning of the set. The sponsor should take a back seat to the band, not stand in front of them. That was a mistake.

Commercials during a live set? Ugh!

by Anonymous on 11/23/14Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I've never seen a commercial played during a live show. Nor had the band stop to hawk goods. Really ruined the vibe of the show. Very disappointed. Hope this doesn't become the norm during live shows.

Give these guys a break already

    by HooksR2Lazy on 11/23/14Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The crowd booed at the opening Xbox / Forza 5 minute advertisement, setting the concert off on the wrong foot. Then the band continuously referenced San Francisco but never once mentioned the city of the venue, Oakland, further ostracizing us concert goers. When I saw capital cities at Coachella the energy was awesome and production flawless but they were over produced this time. I don't care for any band to lead the crowd in the electric slide; if you want me to move my body then make me do it with the music, not by employing some junior high school crowd manipulation techniques. I really liked the second time they played safe and sound.

    Ended with Incredible Energy

by youngrd on 11/22/14Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The performance lacked the normal Capital Cities energy for the 1st hour but they made the wait all worth it with the final 5 songs. Overall average overall rating and likely would not see again but worth seeing them once.

    Forget it

by TheoJames on 11/9/14Newport Music Hall - Columbus

This was the second time I've seen them. The first time they were fun, energetic and thoroughly entertaining. This time they were terrible. The show was gimicky and they were just mailing it it. Hardly talked or interacted with the crowd, and the one guy had no interest in being there it felt like. Save your money.

Capital Cities should not a headliner

    by Maxp123 on 11/7/14Newport - Columbus

Cherub was amazing! Great energy and you can feel how excited they were about their music. Capital Cities was only there to make money. It almost felt like they didn't even like their own music. They brought out a big screen and ended up playing an advertisement!!!! at a concert that I bought a ticket for! Absolutely horrible. The one redeeming thing about their performance was the trumpet player.
