About

Indie-pop/electro duo Capital Cities has blossomed from a couple of Los Angeles-based jingle writers who met on Craigslist to a ticket-selling sensation on tour with other of-the-moment indie acts like Fitz and The Tantrums and Alt-J. It’s virtually impossible to turn on a Top 40 radio station without hearing the band’s danceable synthpop single, “Safe and Sound,” not to mention the promotional campaigns it pops up in for brands like HBO, Smart Car and Microsoft.

The pair, comprised of composers and songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, unveiled their first studio album, “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery,” in the summer of 2013 via Capitol Records/Lazy Hooks. On tour to promote the indietronica release, Capital Cities added bassist Manuel Quintero, guitarist Nick Merwin, drummer Channing Holmes and trumpeter Spencer Ludwig to the live shows, which included sold-out concerts at New York City’s Irving Plaza, as well as two nights at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre.

    Awesome set, do much fun

by LABeachGuy on 6/12/13El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Gold Fields was great and I was thinking how can anybody out do that. Then Capital Cities came on and knocked me off my feet. They had great energy and I was dancing and singing along the entire time. I wished they played One Minute More but the covers of Holiday and Nothing Compares to You were amazing. Definitely the most fun I have had at a concert in a long time and I've been to a lot. The El Ray was a great venue to see them play in. I have a feeling they will be playing much larger places soon and I'm glad ingot to see them in an intimate setting.

Capital Cities is a must see LIVE! Unforgettable evening!! Super fun, great tunes, top performance by all members of the band and the LIVE trumpet player was the cherry on top! Can't wait for their next LA concert at the Greek!

    They are really getting big!

by Olympica on 6/9/13El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I discovered them by chance at Roxy late 2012. I was with a friend and we loved them immediately. And then, they were everywhere on the radio! and not only in LA where they come from (was a work trip in Denver and they were being interviewed on the local radio, so proud, I was the only one knowing them already!). The show at el rey was really awesome, those guys have such an amazing energy! The melodies stay in your head forever, they even add choreography without seeming old fashioned. And the trumpet, oh my god the trumpet! Who thought it could give so much character to their band. So, even if you can feel they are still pretty new (the show can be improved with linking up the songs for instance) they are really great and will get bigger for sure!

    Dancing with strangers

by loopster911 on 6/8/13El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Great show! So much positive energy from the performers, from the fans. I feel so fortunate to have seen these groups at a lace like the El Rey. They won't be playing venues this small for long.

    Awesome show!

by Beckydin on 5/12/13Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

This was the most fun I've had at a show in a while. The opening bands were fun and energetic, and the crowd seemed to enjoy both groups. Then Capital Cities took the stage and brought so much energy, and it was one big dance party all night long. Could have listened to them play for another hour and would have been completely into it. I'll definitely see this band live again, and would encourage friends to go too!

    Capital Cities Rocked!!!!

by PegB13 on 5/12/13Theatre of Living Arts - Philadelphia

This was the second time in 2 weeks that we saw Capital Cities (the other was at Edgefest in Dallas). They were AWESOME each time. We were graced with a meet and greet with the 2 singers, and our only regret was that it did not include the trumpet player, Spencer Ludwig. He is an incredible trumpet player; he is very entertaining as well. At TLA there are no seats except near the bar, so get there early if you want a seat.

    Dance Party

by Eyeguy on 5/11/13Irving Plaza powered by Klipsch - New York

Their concert was one the best I have ever attended. These guys had the audience dancing to every song. They embellished all of their songs to a new level when they performed them live. This without a doubt the most fun I have had at a concert.

So much energy! I go to tons of shows and this was definitely one of my favorites! A must see show! They even came into the crowd to dance with us, and of course hung out afterward for pictures, autographs and conversation! Awesome, guys!

Gold Fields and Capital cities - short but good

by SethDras on 5/10/13Paradise Rock Club - Boston

Neither band played for over and hour, which ended up being a very short show, but the time they played they made the best of it. Pumped the crowd, good music, just wish their was more of it!

Capital Cities & Gold Fields were impressive

by ModeMasterMike on 5/5/13The Fillmore Charlotte - Charlotte

I had to travel from Atlanta to Charlotte since these bands skipped my hometown this time around. I'm glad I made the trip. Lovelife (from England) opened. I had never heard of them prior to this show, but am now a fan. Gold Fields (from Australia) played next, and they were very good. I saw them recently perform on Jimmy Kimmel, and their videos for "Treehouse" & "Dark Again" have been in heavy rotation on MTV2 & Logo. Capital Cities (from L.A.) finished off the night with some very fun synthpop. They did a cover of "Staying Alive", as well as Madonna's "Holiday", along with their originals. Their matching white bowling jackets were awesome. The last song, a dance version of their hit "Safe And Sound", caused a jumping frenzy when they got off stage to dance among the crowd. This show was well worth the $19 that I spent on the ticket. I'll definitely go see these bands again.
