About

Indie-pop/electro duo Capital Cities has blossomed from a couple of Los Angeles-based jingle writers who met on Craigslist to a ticket-selling sensation on tour with other of-the-moment indie acts like Fitz and The Tantrums and Alt-J. It’s virtually impossible to turn on a Top 40 radio station without hearing the band’s danceable synthpop single, “Safe and Sound,” not to mention the promotional campaigns it pops up in for brands like HBO, Smart Car and Microsoft.

The pair, comprised of composers and songwriters Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, unveiled their first studio album, “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery,” in the summer of 2013 via Capitol Records/Lazy Hooks. On tour to promote the indietronica release, Capital Cities added bassist Manuel Quintero, guitarist Nick Merwin, drummer Channing Holmes and trumpeter Spencer Ludwig to the live shows, which included sold-out concerts at New York City’s Irving Plaza, as well as two nights at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre.

    opening act terrible

by QiSiWoLe on 10/29/14The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

The first opening act was sooo terrible and loud that it caused my sister to faint and hit her head, giving her a concussion. So I had to rush her out of there before seeing the headliner. Ruined my day! Thankfully she is ok.

The energy of this show, both from the band and the audience, was unbelievable. Such a great experience. I can't wait to see them again.

    Never Stopped Dancing!

by Lexussssss on 10/9/14State Theater - St Pete

Capital Cities is on my top 10 best concerts. They are so energetic and will keep you dancing from beginning to end while they dance with you! They played their entire album. The best part was their trumpet player because he had the most energy! I can't wait to see them again.

Hands down one of the best concerts ever!

by NewForeverFan on 5/31/14Tom McCall Waterfront Park - Portland

WOW. Absolutely wow. The energy of the concert was infectious. Everyone in the band just looked like they were having a great time and that feeling just passed right into the crowd. The trumpet player moved like he was part of the music and the singers got the crowd going all night. I would go to another of their concerts any day! Their opening act, Scars on 45 was great too!

Capital Cities gives an excellent show!

by TriciaBelle on 5/29/14Tom McCall Waterfront Park - Portland

Even though it rained during the first two acts, it was dry for Capital Cities. (They're obviously God's favorite band!) beautiful music with a really great, energetic performance. I would love to see them in concert again.

    Cap. Cities positively fun!

by CapCitFan on 5/28/14Tom McCall Waterfront Park - Portland

What a band! The venue was rainy up until the show started, which weeded out all the fair weather fans. It made the experience that more memorable and personal. Just like last time I saw them, I was grinning from ear to ear, and jumping my calves off. What a great night.

    Capital Cities

    by Savage18 on 4/14/14Timmons Arena - Greenville

Capital Cities themselves gave a fair performance, although I was not a huge fan before I went to their concert. They were high energy and had great interactions with the audience. However, their set lasted about an hour, which was very short. Both of the openers were maximum 45 minutes each. The show ended before 10:00, and started after 7pm; I would not pay money to see such a short show again.

CAPITAL CITIES -- Brilliant Unadulterated FUN!!

by gregb on 12/18/13The Fillmore - San Francisco

It was the last evening of 2013 non-stop touring for Capital Cities so they wound up at the historic Fillmore packed with crazy (or perhaps crazed) fans. Everyone seemed to be high energy and wanting to dance along. Ryan Merchant is a tall strikingly handsome lead singer and he combined with the bearded Sebu Simonian led the crowd through hand and dance moves for most of the night. They were dancing and hopping around the stage...even jumped off to shake hands and high five those close enough. Safe and Sound launched this band into stardom and it naturally closed the set....with even a reprised mix. I've seen the band three times now and always leave having had a great time. Hopefully after resting they will go out again in 2014

    Fan-freaking-tastic

by CapitalCaptain on 8/27/13El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

This show was incredible. I would recommend both of these bands to anyone looking for an unforgettable night. This is my second time seeing Capital Cities live, and I will continue to see them every chance I get. They are so energetic, they get the crowd dancing and it feels like a party. YOU NEED TO SEE THEM BEFORE THEY GET SO BIG THAT THEY ONLY PLAY LARGE VENUES. TRUST ME.

RUN DON'T WALK to see these guys live

by nicatnite on 7/30/13El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

My main draw for going to this show was Gold Fields. Walking in I knew only one Capital Cities song, "Safe and Sound" (the one they overplay on the radio), so I wasn't sure what to expect from their show. Walking OUT I was a changed woman! CC delivers the best, most energetic live performance out there, hands down. It was a non-stop dance party from start to finish and the song lyrics and hooks were instantly catchy (these guys used to be commercial jingle writers so they know what they're doing). The live trumpet player Spencer is INCREDIBLE - he adds just the right amount of soul to their sound and helps differentiate CC from other electronic duos out there like Chromeo, etc. Easily the best money I've ever spent on concert tickets... and I buy a lot of tickets. If you're at all into electronic pop or just want to experience something new, do yourself a favor and check these guys out asap!!!!
