by RayPad on 11/4/12Auditorium Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Unforgettable performance by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet! I can't wait until they return to Chicago....or perhaps I need to see them in Winnipeg!?

  • Svengali exceptional choreography and set design

by Anonymous on 4/24/12The Centre In Vancouver for Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Dramatic and emotionally conveyed story through the filter of WWII atrocities. Suggestion not child appropriate maybe sensor with age 13 and up for suggestive content.

Excellent show as expected. Very beautiful indeed.

  • Moulin Rouge - Ballet not very exciting

by drako42s on 2/20/12Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 2 out of 5

I had never been to a ballet so wanted to give it a try. In the end my review is this, ballet is not for me. I enjoy more interaction with the performers such as dialog or signing. Apparently just dance, especially the same still for the entire show is not my cup of tea. I do agree it was beautiful and elegant. I was able to more or less hear the story through the dance itself.

  • Moulin Rouge a Delight!

by Lenswoman on 2/20/12Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

I was fortunate to purchase a seat on the ground floor/parterre of the Valley Performing Arts Center at CSUN to see the only performance of "Moulin Rouge" by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company on Feb 18, 2012. The choreography was created by Jorden Morris to the music of various composers, including Shostakovitch, Strauss, Debussy (Clair de Lune for the pas de deux), Ravel, Lehar, Ibert, Piazzolla among others as well as Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose" and of course, can-cans by Offenbach. The production was lovely…the dancers all graceful with amazing extensions, strength and stamina and with precise technique. The ballet was a story about a young laundress, Nathalie (danced by Amanda Green), who is brought into the Moulin Rouge as a dancer by the owner, Zidler (Amar Dhaliwal), who has amorous designs on her. She loves the artist, Matthew (Dmitri Dovgoselets), who, after a "paint off" duel, has become friends with Toulouse-Lautrec (Yosuke Mino). (Lautrec would undoubtedly be pleased to see himself portrayed as full size and as an amazing dancer!). The cabaret's dancers resent the new addition at first and there is a bit of a competition with the lead dancer, La Goulue (red head Jo-Ann Sundermeier, who looks as if she emerged from a Lautrec painting. ALL of the dancers could do grand battements far above their heads and were extremely impressive. The sets included a backdrop of the Paris street in front of the club, the interior of the Moulin Rouge and various Paris street scenes with the Eiffel Tower in the background. The second act begins with absinthe-induced dances with green fairies and ends with the club owner attempting to shoot Matthew, but killing Nathalie by accident. The costumes were colorful and era appropriate, the choreography was lyrical and lovely, with the emphasis in the Can-Cans on grand battements, ronde de jamb en lair and echappees (of course!), and the entire company impressed me with their excellent technique. Founded in 1939, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is the longest continually operating ballet company in North America and they present more than 70 performances each season including original works like Dracula, Svengali, Peter Pan and Moulin Rouge, which premiered in 2009 and has become the company's biggest box-office success. I just wish it could have had a longer run in Southern California!

  • Moulin Rouge and VPAC are amazing.

by Bemma on 2/20/12Valley Performing Arts Center - NorthridgeRating: 5 out of 5

The Valley Performing Arts Center is a gorgeous venue, easy parking too. The sets, costumes, music and dancers were amazing. I wish it was there for more than one night we would go again!

  • Amazing Nutcracker

by SparticusFinch on 12/30/11Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

The Winnipeg Symphony was absolutely amazing and the RWB was at the top of their game. I would so recommend this to anyone who enjoys really awesome sound and the grace of one of the world's finest ballet companies.

    A world-class event. A great Holiday extravaganza.

  • Wonderland by winnepeg royal ballet was exceptiona

by Anonymous on 11/16/11Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

It was an incredible performance. Had no idea what to expect not being a real ballet fan, but was pleasantly surprised. Can't wait now to see snow white in the spring.

  • Wonderful - but live orchestra requested

by Brillig on 11/15/11Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Delighted by the hip interpretation of this classic piece of literature. Have attended RWB in Winnipeg for years and missed their fantastic orchestra and sophisticated venue. Would encourage all to visit that city for the RWB accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for an overwhelmingly magical experience.

  • by WPG2MSP on 11/15/11Orpheum Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

From the lighting, the effects to the artistry and dance - this was a fabulous show for all who attended. Great job, RWB! Another amazing performance!

  • RWB amazing!

by Wolseley on 5/10/11Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

I found the last performance of Bright Lights,Big City to be unforgettable. As much as I like classical ballet, these three acts showed the athletic prowess and ability of the dancers in a whole different light. I enjoyed the costumes, music and choreography and my mom, who is 88 years old, was also delighted by the RWB. She was most impressed by The Ecstasy of Rita Joe.

  • Clever Wonderland

by Hungryformore on 5/3/11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderland is a clever, inspired piece that brings RWB back into the 21st Century. Shawn Hounsell has created an innovative approach to this classic story and he has delivered a classic of his own for the company.

  • Wonderland was wondrous!

by AliceinBellingham on 3/29/11The Centre In Vancouver for Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Enjoyed the whole performance in every way. Incredibly imaginative and creative. Loved it. Some difficulty hearing the spoken lines through the megaphone--maybe a technical difficulty? But everything else was perfect.

  • Alice Wonderland

by Nassus on 3/27/11The Centre In Vancouver for Performing Arts - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Alice seemed to run through most of the production along with the rest of the cast. Lots of confusion on stage. Came to see a ballet and did not. Music was more irritating than dramatic. My only accolade was for the set design and presentation.

  • Dracula almost gets there

by dancingclayman on 10/3/10Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

RWB's Dracula was not bad. I was disappointed by the costuming (pretty washed out, very few deep, intense colours), the score (not very dramatic, choir could have been used to much greater effect), and the absence of a truly creepy, gothic feel. And I really couldn't get into the pantomime or the wolf vignette. But despite these criticisms, I still enjoyed and would recommend it. It was good. It could have been great.

  • Absolutely amazing performance!

by CaffeinatedDanceMom on 3/14/10Centennial Concert Hall - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

We watched the RWB dance Swan Lake last night, accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. It was an amazing performance! The dancing was sublime, the live music was superb, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. What a great event!
