It was a great performance, and it made my Wife very happy!!! #HappyWifeHappyLife!!
The Canadian Ballet Company performed a well choreographed version of Swan Lake. The Virginia Symphony was as amazing as they always are and I can honestly say my wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly
The CR Winnipeg Ballet is incredible, I mean, I've only seen them perform once before this but when I heard about them creating a piece inspired by Joseph Boyden and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, I knew it was more important than just any ballet. I was hesitant when I found out that none of the dancers were First Nations, not even the tiniest bit, however, there were so many cultural influences surrounding the performance that I had forgotten within the first act. I'm so glad that I was able to attend. I've been a ballet dancer since I was very young and am also Anishnaabe. It brought two things together that I loved, that seemed so separate and I could never have realized would come together so well. Miigwetch Elder Mary Richard and everyone who partook in the vision and creation the Going Home Star performance.
If I could have given the performance more stars, I would have!
I have never seen a ballet, but I am hooked! The art form for me was secondary to the content. I was interested in the subject and theme. Of course that interest is still alive and thriving, but now, I am changed forever. "Going Home Star - Truth and Reconciliation" is a remarkably transformational presentation and opening dialog for a painful process. But the beauty overrides the pain, making it the perfect entry point for those not engaged in this pivotal movement. As an art form, it truly illuminates the power of the arts with regard to complex ideas and conversations. I now love ballet.
The performance was very well done!!! Every time I see a version of the Nutcracker they put a little twist into the Story. I much prefer the Canadian Version over the one set in Russia. I go simply to hear the wonderful score performed live by the NAC Orchestra. Everyone should see the Nutcracker at least once in their Lifetime, though some people don't care for ballet very much.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet Company is truly outstanding. Every dancer, every scene was excellent. Romeo and Juliet were so well matched, superb in their performances
This ballet is exquisite with beautiful costumes, choreography, and, of course, dancing!. I loved the scene where Juliet danced alternately with Count Paris and Romeo--it evoked the push and pull that is central to the themes of the story: the generational divide, the rivalry between families, the incredible sadness of our failure to understand one another. Bravo to all involved!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! RWB always is and this was no exception. Just wish they woud come more frequently to Vancouver! Love them!
RWB is my favourite Canadian ballet company and they never disappoint. Romeo & Juliet was mesmerising, thrilling, heart-breaking (no matter how many times one has seen a version of the story) but where was the audience? Edmonton is not much of a dance town, alas, but even the usual crowd was MIA. I apologize on behalf of all those who should have been there! Re the choreography: my only disappointment was Lady Capulet's Lament at the death of Tybalt. I once saw a National Ballet production (a long time ago) whose choreographer, whoever that was, created a lamentation that was hair-raising, especially since it made perfect correspondence between body language and the music. Von Danzig's choreography for this scene was underwhelming, IMHO.
RWB excellent but recorded music a disappointment. The speaker system at the Jubillee Theatre projected only a thin approximation of the wonderful Prokofiev music. It was a shame that the CPO was not engaged to really make it a special event.
From beginning to end, this is a beautiful ballet.
A Canadian interpretation of an old classic- beautiful. I missed some of the more classic costuming and thought the bear was ridiculous and distracting. But the choreography and overall effect was lovely! Well done children's roles, and there was a great balance of strong men's roles with principal ballerina.
Attended the ballet with our family. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it......even my son-in laws that had never been to a professional ballet. Great music, wonderful dancing and an easy to follow story for those new to ballet.
One of the best ballets I have ever seen. The story was clearly enacted through the dance and the music selections were phenomenal. I enjoyed every minute.
The choreography of this performance told this classic and romantic tragedy amazingly well. It became clear to me that, as presented, it is a story made for the ballet. Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet was thoroughly entertaining!
We loved the Ballet, and were impressed with the length of time that the dancers were on point. The costumes were beautiful, and we thought it was a world class performance.
Going into the ballet I was concerned how a dance troupe would capture the style, drama, and passion of this story. But in end it exceeded expectation in every way. Very well done.
The first ballet I ever saw was "Gaite Parisienne," and now I seem to have come full circle: Offenbach music (but lots of other well-chosen pieces by Ibert, Shostakovich, Strauss Jr, ...), love story, can-can, etc. This production is remarkable in the way that it blends classical steps with cabaret, and avoids the obvious trap of campy-kitschy wink-wink naughtiness, not that there isn't a little of that. The choreography points up the music with great finesse. I was really afraid that a moonlight pas de deux to "Clair de Lune" would be over the top, but the dancers sold it. Sets, wardrobe, lead dancers, all first rate. After seeing it once, I went back & saw it again, liking it even more the second time. My only criticism is that the death scene is a little drawn out. (But nothing like the awful insect-like spasms of Tybalt's death in MacMillan's R&J.)
Moulin Rouge had colorful costumes, humor, romance, and fun! Best ballet ever!
