    A 20th century golden aged musical re-imagined

by Eric04 on 5/3/15Lyell B Clay Concert Theatre - Morgantown

The Phoenix Entertainment production of Lerner and Lowes' Camelot was superb which is a term I seldom use to describe a musical or any stage production. Its minimal scenery more than adequately created a beautiful stage picture. The costumes were lavishly made. The staging was brilliantly conceived. The musical had its "comic" elements removed along with its dance numbers so that the drama focused on the relationship between King Arthur, Guenevere and Lancelot from the very beginning of the play. The cast, though small in number, did an excellent job portraying the characters, even when some played more than one role throughout the musical. All the singers had wonderful voices. There wasn't a one that I would have replaced. The small musical ensemble in the pit was gigantic in sound through the use of miking performing a newly rescored orchestration. I'm glad that I decided to attend this re-imagined version of Camelot

    Good show

by ormond2 on 4/10/15The Peabody Daytona Beach - Daytona Beach

The guy who played King Arthur was top notch. The woman who played Guenevere has a beautiful voice and she did a good job acting as well. The arrangement of If Ever I would leave you in my opinion was very bad. The way they brought instruments in one at a time made the singer sound out of tune even though Im sure he wasnt. I was with my mother and she told me that song sounded terrible so it wasnt just me who thought this. I think they should have taken more care when fooling around with the arrangement of the shows signature song. The pace of the show is really weird but that is not the fault of this production it is issues they dealt with back in its premier in 1960. All happy in the first half and all doom and burning at the stake in the second, and rushing thru pivotal plot points at the end just to wrap things up. Over all I really enjoyed it because I do love the music of the show.

    Great!

    by 24601JeanValjean on 4/9/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

The choreography, storyline, singing, and acting were all top-notch. I've seen nearly every Tony award winning Broadway musical to date, and this was up there with the best of them.

    It was ok

by Liveyr on 4/8/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Seats were a little bit uncomfortable, the view had a slight obstruction, and the play was a little slow at times. It had some decent comical moments and some good singing, but I found myself yawing and hoping it would end soon. My wife actually fell asleep -- and it was the afternoon show. She said she would rather watch the movie at home.

    Camelot was weak

by RandyMann on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

While clearly a professional performance, it lacked the energy I was expecting from an event of this caliber. I have only seen one other event so far this year, which was Phantom of the Opera, to base my opinion on so it may not be fair. I was rivited for hours during Phantom of the Opera but lost interest with Camelot within the first hour. It simply lacked the intensity I would expect from a play with this reputation.

    Camelot was a bit lackluster

    by Happy2cshow on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Compared to the many other traveling performances I have seen at Chrysler Hall, Camelot was below par. While the voices were very good, the entire performance overall lacked any spark or emotion or power. It was a bit like listening to the music on a DVD - great music but no compelling performance to go with it.

    Camelot

by Keeneey on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Interesting production. Not quite Broadway experience. I saw the original in a smaller venue and perhaps that was the problem. I personally like a larger orchestra. In this production the drumming was too over-powering. Scene to scene transition were slow and disjointed. There was little flow. The actor, singer, playing Lancelot was flat singing "If ever I would leave you... which ruined potentially best song in the show.

    Lancelot couldn't sing

by GoToDurham on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

What happened to musical theater at Chrysler Hall? Through the years, I've seen "Cats" and "Oliver" and they were outstanding performances with full orchestras and talented casts. Camelot's cast was talented -- what there was of it. Guinevere's voice rivals Julie Andrews and, for those who us who know the original Broadway soundtrack by heart, that is a major compliment. Arthur was great; Mordred was OUTSTANDING!!!. But when Lancelot stepped out and, rather than proclaim "CAMELOT!!!!!" mewled "camelot," I knew to cover my ears when it was time for "If Ever I Would Leave You." Unfortunately, I still heard it, and Lancelot was flat. We started to worry just after entering the theater and noticing there was no orchestra tuning up. There never was an overture and I still don't know if the music was canned or if a trio was hidden behind the curtain. Dear Chrysler Hall: Don't mess with one of the most beloved musicals of all time. If you can't do it right, don't book it.

    Great entertainment

    by Arob2204 on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

While not the huge cast and massive sets of some Broadway shows, Camelot is a great musical. I fell in love with the songs back when Burton, Andrews and Goulet starred in the production. This cast did a great job with the songs. Voices were lovely and the acting entertaining. Arthur's voice in particular was excellent. He was clear,, on pitch and easily understandable throughout the night. My wife and I enjoyed the show!

Camelot - A great high school play!

by CruiserDoc on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Walked out at intermission. Good singing does not equal good acting. Actors appeared bored. Dialogue dated. Cringe-worthy Merlin. Sets were worn. Just awful.

    Camelot

    by Trendy123 on 4/7/15Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

Was really good. The three main characters sang beautifully. AND I understood everything that they said. Costumes were beautiful. I would recommend anyone seeing this production. 1st act was rather funny with the 2nd act being serious.

Poor production. Music was over powered by percussion. The traditional Overture was omitted and Loewe would have been embarrassed at this interpretation of his music. "Take me to the Fair" was omitted as well. "If Ever I Would Leave You" was performed off key for the first verse before Lancelot found the tune.
