Weak performance in a weak setting. Too small a stage for a large production
This production put a smile on my face for it's entirety. I brought my daughter who had not yet been born when I was listening to the recorded version with Andrews and Burton. The voice of The Queen was an immediate relief. Beautiful ,strong, and sassy. Waiting for the entry of Sir Lancelot was also a toss up. As much as he looked rather like a Viking warrior he was seductive and a charming egotist. The king and Mordred were richly done. With a cast so small they put on an enviable rendition. Bravo ! And thank you for a break in the world misery. Great energy . Great vocal ability. and
Amazing singers, wonderfully cast. Great show for all ages!
We have been attending Music Theater Works (formerly Light Opera Works) productions for at least 10 years. We once looked forward to attending their shows based on the high quality of their work. Since Rudy H. and Bridget M. left, the quality of their work has gone significantly downhill. I used to compare their shows to Steppenwolf, Goodman and Broadway in Chicago. Having just seen Camelot, I would compare their version to a good college performance. The casting was poor and not in the spirit of this show. Music Theater Works has set a high bar for what is expected from them and seems to be going the wrong direction. Their prices have increased, the current theater situation is not as good as Cahn was and the performance quality is at best fair. This does not seem like a good combination for long term success. Hopefully they will be able to turn it around quickly.
This is a small-scale production of a large-scale musical. If you want to see a show with Medieval pageantry, this isn't it. On the other hand, the show still occupies my mind days later. Costumes are casual. Don't know if this was a budgetary decision or a choice to make the show less specific to time and place. Most of the knights are women. Was this to balance the voices for the chorus or to balance the misogynistic elements of the story. The production highlights the most powerful elements of the musical. These make Camelot one of the great shows of the musical theater: three people who love each other and in the process destroy each other, the damage that Guenevere's ego and Mordred's mother do to Arthur's ideals, and the privilege of the royal principals whose confilct leads to the death of vast numbers of commoners. The main characters are well-cast. Guenevere is outstanding.
Performers and musicians provided a flawless performance. Very enjoyable!
The actors in Camelot were very good with beautiful voices, however it was very low budget and paying $100 a ticket I expected scenery changes and costume changes that didn’t come out of their own closet
A great performance by talented actors. Set and orchestra were fantastic. A must see.
The story line followed the original play. The actors gave an excellent performance. The suggestion that I would make is about the customs. Richard and the queen were royalty therefore I believe their customs should reflect their status; nothing elaborate.
From the moment that the curtains parted, this was a train wreck of a show. Their concept of Arthur was overshadowed by horrible singing and absolutely NO ACTION! The stage props and configuration of the stage setup indicated that this was a very LOW BUDGET show. If you were not directly in front of the stage, you missed pieces of the show, because you couldn't see. I couldn't believe that the story line of Camelot/Arthur was so far from what we expected. Spent $150 dollars to be unimpressed. If they had made this more of an actual play with action, this could have been a great show, but they couldn't stop singing long enough to act. I watched many audience members find the exit during intermission. The disappointment on everyone's face was spot on, but let me know we weren't the only ones that couldn't believe how bad this production was. Unless you like Opera singing, bad acting and a horrible story line, then I would suggest that you save your money for something more entertaining. You can get a movie cheaper and sleep through that in the convenience of your own home.
