Buffalo Sabres History

The Sabres joined the NHL in the 1970 expansion, and just two years later embarked on a streak that saw them reach the playoffs in 12 of the next 13 seasons. Leading the way were "The French Connection" line of Hall of Fame center Gilbert Perreault, left-wing Rick Martin, and right-wing René Robert. The Quebec-born trio was together in Buffalo from 1972 through 1979. Aided by Craig Ramsay, the Sabres and their French Connection advanced to the 1975 Stanley Cup Final in  their fifth season, though they fell in six games to the Philadelphia Flyers.

In the following 10 seasons, all of which resulted in playoff berths, the Sabres captured two division titles. Fueled by defenseman (and former U.S. Olympic star) Mike Ramsey, the Sabres made nine playoff appearances between the 1981–1982 and 1991–1992 seasons. Later, during goaltender Dominik Hasek's nine seasons, the Sabres continued to be a consistent playoff team. In 1999, they dispatched the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs to again reach the Stanley Cup Finals, where they fell to the Dallas Stars in six games.

In 2006 and 2007 the Sabres made it as far as the conference finals before succumbing to the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators, respectively. To date, the Sabres have been in the playoffs 29 times, winning six divisional championships and three conference titles.

    RJ Night

by Judy on 4/4/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

We had great seats except for the RJ presentation, we had to watch it from the side or look up on the large screen. Didn't like finding out at last minute that I couldn't bring my purse in, then seeing several people with purses in the arena after I arrived there. Entrance rules should be enforced on all attendees.

    It was a great time.

by Granny “B” on 4/4/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

We love hockey so this game was a celebration of their retiring play-by-play announcer and had a lot of unique things going on plus our team won.

Being at Keybank center for the RJ night meant everything

by Vicky on 4/4/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

The crew at the Arena did an amazing job for RJ night. Sharing the event with my sister made it even better. We were raised with RJ as our hockey voice and it was a fun night. I’m glad there was enough advertising by Ticketmaster and Sabres marketing to make sure it was sold out for our local Icon!

    Historic Night

by Bear on 3/13/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

All Sabres games are spectacular events regardless of the outcome. Since this was my first game back in Buffalo since the pandemic I was excited to see what was changed. Everything seemed untouched except for the performance stage in section 120. I like this addition to the game day experience. Everything else is the same old arena and I love it. The only issue is the arena lighting. Buffalo isn’t the only place with this issue. The older, outdated arenas are dimmer than newer arenas like Vegas, Seattle, and Detroit. This is an issue because when the photographer takes a photo, there is a blinding bright flash that is distracting. The fact newer arenas lighting is bright enough where the flash isn’t needed shows we need a better lighting system. Outside of that the game was very entertaining and even tho I went wearing the other teams jersey fans were still respectful.

    Sad State of Affairs

by Mickey on 1/14/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

Spent a lot of money on seats, food, parking etc. and the Pegula's have the nerve to put this team on the ice. They are an embarrassment. Buffalo starting to figure it out, maybe 5-6k fans? Sad state of affairs. That will be our last game until they put a decent product on the ice.

    Buffalo Sabres game

by Ryan on 1/1/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

I had never sat in the 200 section before, but I’ll be sure to more often in the future. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and having the service bar right there was an added bonus so I didn’t miss much of the game. Can’t wait to go back when I’m in WNY again!

An exciting glimpse of the future

    by RobM6 on 1/1/22KeyBank Center - Buffalo

JJ Peterka, Ethan Prow, Alex Tuch and Peyton Krebs all played their firsts as Sabres and despite the loss, the future potential was easy to see. Peterka’s speed, Tuch's power and drive, Kreb's play making, and Prow's desire were all obvious. With having only one or no practice with their new teammates they did well. GO SABRES!

    Bags

by alex on 12/16/21KeyBank Center - Buffalo

There needs to be better communication regarding stadium/arena rules about personal bags. I’m from Canada and typically small bags are allowed and just checked by security. There was no warning prior to the event that no bags would be allowed inside unless it was a small clutch purse. If an even has rules like this, it should be clearly communicated when you buy your ticket. Not very impressed by this lack of communication. Otherwise the game was entertaining and the facilities were beautiful.

    Info

by Diggity on 12/15/21KeyBank Center - Buffalo

The event was great, my only complaint is that there was no information before hand saying that my wife could not bring her purse into the event and also there was no information saying that you cannot use cash at the event.
