About

Bluesy singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt has worked long and hard for her multiple Grammy Awards, hit singles and chart-topping records. Since her 1971 eponymous debut, the California-born performer and long-time activist has steadily maintained a music career, albeit with definite peaks and valleys. The red-headed songstress, one of the only women of her time to play guitar using the bottleneck technique, unleashed seven albums in just nine years, though her big commercial break came with her 10th studio set, 1989’s “Nick of Time.” That 11-track collection, produced by Don Was, earned three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Not only has the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer tackled multiple U.S. tours and international runs, but she’s also a frequent participant in events of social activism, such as Farm Aid and Amnesty International concerts.

Raitt’s 16th full-length album and most recent studio release, “Slipstream,” hit retailers in 2012. Not only did ticket sales for the support tour soar, but Raitt also landed the best-selling blues album of the year and took home the Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Rather blindly, we made reservations to see the BonTaj Roulet show in Atlanta. We're from Naples, FL and had little understanding of what we were about to experience. Let me set the stage. Imagine a structure: the Chastain Amphitheatre, built into a natural bowl shaped spot in Atlanta's Buckhead community. This structure was built in 1944 by our citizens for the public good - and brothers and sisters: public good was done! The site's policies allow its guests to come: picnic baskets in hand. Oh heck, bring silver and tray tables, wine glasses and libations. Fill the night with sounds of wine glasses toasting good times, fill the air with the sumptuous aromas of lots of Mamas' home cooking! Now add the inimitable Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt: alone and together, as the play bill boasts. Hear our nations' most appreciated blues chanteuse, Bonnie Railtt reminisce of the days when "Outside Man" was written and produced and know you're welcoming old friends who are visiting, bringing the best gifts of their harvests! Thanks to Bonnie, Taj and their combined musical associates. Darned if a nice couple of horns didn't just make things perfect!

  • Bonnie was as good as ever!

Taj Mahal was great too. Perfect setting at Chastain. I was surprised that the venue was about 75% full, but the extra space to spread out was great!

  • BonTaj Roulet - great matchup!

by shambles on 8/21/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Taj Mahal and Bonnie Rait are two of the biggest names in modern blues, and they really hit it off well. I had seen Taj Mahal perform at a very small private party before and that was one of my first introductions to blues, at that time I thought he was simply a very talented musician, but being at Chastain Amphitheater - he really played to the scale of the venue. Taj really livened-up the audience with his uptempo songs and showed his multi-instrumental excellence on some of the bluesier pieces. He played a song or two from his grammy winning album too. Bonnie Rait came on next and totally stole the show. She played a couple bluesy pieces, showing her skills with the slide guitar - before busting out "Something to talk about" and "Thing called Love". She brought Taj out to do some combined pieces which showed just how similar and co-influenced the two musicians pallettes are. Her rendition of "I can't make you love me" was chilling in it's simplicity with great silhouetted lighting and spirited solos from her bands keyboardist. A great performance all around and you know Bonnie is telling the truth when she says "I've been meaning to do this tour for decades".

  • The duo was incredible

Bonnie Raitt was wonderful and Taj Mahal was really good too. We took our sons and daughter-in-laws and we all had a great time.

  • Bontaj Roule was fantastic

by jatnob on 8/20/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I loved the interplay of both bands. They brought out the best in each other and appeared to enjoy the event. They melded well and performed much of their own material at the same event. It was always energized!

  • Far beyond anticipation!

Same genre but from different points of interpretation. Bonnie Raitt has long been on my list of must do's and Chastain Park and Taj Mahal were the prefect mix. Even if you do not think you would prefer some vintage blues artist...think again. Excellent show and playlist from both artist and the climaxxx of the stage filled combo was an unexpected finale.

  • Lovely evening.

If you love the blues, you'll love BR and Taj Mahal each and together. These veterans are so comfortable on stage that I felt like they were good old friends of mine.

  • Bonnie Raitt & Taj - an incredible show!

by jimc0923 on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

I've been attending concerts for over 40 years. Bon Taj Roulet was the best! I also have to say the venue (Chastain Ampitheatre in Atlanta) was the most enjoyable I've ever attended.

  • BonTaj Roulet: Bonnie Raitt & Taj Mahal

by Ronsphoto on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The best event we have seen at Chastain Park. Bonnie and Taj were great seperately, but really brought us to our feet when they played together. All the supporting musicians were exceptional and added an additional dimension to the event.

  • BonTaj

by ltusmc on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 3 out of 5

Unlike most people who came to the show, I came to see Taj Mahal. I was disappointd, Taj was either not happy or he knows that he can't do what he used to do so he is going thru the motions for the money. Personally, I think he has lost his voice and ability to play. I was hurt. Bonnie, on the other hand, was Awesome and so was her band.

  • B and T: Classy Classic Blues

by bajeha on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

The great thing about going to see top professional musicians do their thing is that you know exactly what you're going to get. So you sit down, sit back, and enjoy the gig -- but then they blow you out of your seat by doing something unexpected. Apparently this was the plan cooked up by blues music pros Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal (the latter backed by the Phantom Blues Band) for their joint tour. Trust me: It works. The show began with each artist playing a complete set with their respective bands in this intimate bowl-like venue; patrons may bring in food, drinks, tray tables and candles, which creates a nightclub effect. Taj opened the show; he was followed by Bonnie. Each performer delivered a tasty plate of rootsy down-home blues that the knowledgable Deep South audience assured them was finger-lickin' good. A low-key but effective stage and lighting design provided a classy background for their mixes of top hits and well-known blues classics. I admired Bonnie and Taj's stage presence and relaxed chats with the audience about themselves and their music between numbers. Developing a genuine rapport is a show biz skill that few younger music performers seem to think is necessary. Is instant celebrity, huge venues, videos and/or the dependence on electronics to blame? Regardless of the reason, I think they would learn a lot about how to build a loyal fan base by watching seasoned pros like Raitt and Mahal, who learned their craft by playing the tough blues club circuit for decades. The surprise of the evening came when the two bands played together as one behind Bonnie and Taj. What a great big juicy sound! They performed some great old numbers in tandem like She Caught The Katy. Obviously fond of each other personally and professionally, B and T played off each other's voices and instruments in a terrific rave-up session. People were on their feet cheering. It was a fine way to end the show. Bonnie made it clear that there would not be an encore, and there wasn't. I expect this might be due to the tour's charitable fundraising commitment, which I believe involves some post-show backstage schmoozing with VIP ticketholders, local supporters and sponsors. Actually, I thought dispensing with an encore was an honest and refreshing change from the norm. IMO the encore has become a pre-packaged expectation that is built into shows; it sure isn't the spontaneous reaction to a well-received performance that it should be. The bottom line: Catch Bon and Taj and see how why getting the blues can make you really happy.

  • Bonnie and Taj were wonderful

by Danfan57 on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

The best concert I have seen since we saw Bonnie at Chastain a couple years ago. Would recommend this to everyone who loves the "Blues" Bonnie's comments were priceless!

  • Bontag Roulez rocked Chastain

by Bluesfantine on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the best concerts I have ever seen! I couldn't believe it wasn't sold out. Two consummate musicians/ performers who each brought a fabulous band with them. Well-thought-out set list. A wonderful evening. No one-upsmanship at all. Taj and his band played, then Bonnie and her band, then both of them with both their bands. Everyone was on their feet, dancing.

  • Bonnie Raitt

by BroCo on 8/19/09Chastain Park Amphitheatre Peter Conlon Presents - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Definitely a show worth seeing again!! Taj Mahal was alright, but Bonnie Raitt was fantastic. The songs they played together were great, too!
