Blues Traveler and Lewis Black...so far so good

by Bluesbunny on 7/6/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Blues Traveler never disappoints.... consummate musicians, quality sound, lots of energy. and add Lewis Black...as good or better than I've ever seen him. Black was fabulous. The headliner reasons to attend this show are flawless. But then, there were the mistakes made by the venue, and the awful performance by Joe Lewis. Either the venue never did a sound check for Joe Lewis, or he's got a new band and they'd never played together before that night. Abominable ... most of the crowd grew very impatient for this bit to end. It was just noise. The stage setup didn't give Lewis Black anyplace to perform from; he was squeezed in between piles of tarped-over music equipment ... you wouldn't have noticed him on stage if it weren't for his powerful voice and delivery. That may be the last outdoor 'rain or shine' event i buy tickets for...second time this summer to be rained on and to decide for myself whether to endure sitting in the rain or loose the money spent for what should have been a first-class event.

    great evening

by dewy on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

excellent evening, first comedian a little long, Lewis Black to short (he kills me). Black Lewis kickass dancing music and Blues Traveller great as always. Weather cleared up and was wonderful, and almost a full moon for us. Fireworks from Bandamiere were a bonus.

    Awesome Concert

by Drqew on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

The evening started with 2 comedians, rated fair. Then the night got better with the opening act of Lewis Black. They were amazing and sounded great. I became a fan after their performance. Blue Traveler ended the night and couldn't be better. I really didn't know of their music, but after I am became a true fan. Couldn't have asked for a better place to see a live concert. The red rock amphitheater was beautiful scenery and the weather was great.

    Lewis Black is hilarious!

by Niss on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

LOVED hearing Lewis Black in person. We were in row 29 and it was tough to see his priceless facial expressions, but still awesome!

    Blues traveler rocked!

by Flage on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

The comedians seemed out of place but the bands were awesome especially with the fireworks in the backround of the stage

Blues Traveler, Lewis Black and Black Joe Lewis

by SexySara on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Wow, Blues Traveler was awesome as usual! You'd think the fireworks were part of the show as the setlist matched them really well! The rain held too!

Too much 'traveling' from their recorded songs

by AdamB on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Great night to be at Red Rocks. Fireworks were spectacular. Blues Traveler did too many musical jam sessions that drifted off into the night. So many great songs, but only heard a handful. The turntable mixing was good, but shouldn't have come back for a second go. I've seen them multiple times before in Boston back in the day (over 15 years ago) and they were better than.

    Blues Traveler/Black Joe Lewis/Lewis Black - GREAT

by Tilltaz on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Lewis Black is a truly warped and funny man. Black Joe Lewis made me want to get up and dance...so I did. Great music for sure. I hadn't seen Blues Traveler live before and wonder why I hadn't. John Popper opened up with a Jimi Hendrix-style Star Spangled Banner on his harmonica, then Blues Traveler took off from there. The whole night was excellent.

Fourth of July at Red Rocks was amazing!

by Yeta134 on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

It was a full evening of celebration starting with the opening comedy act and ending with the awesome performance of Blues Traveler. Lewis Black was in top form and Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears were toe-tappingly energetic. Red Rocks is a beautiful venue at any time but with the fireworks exploding all over the city of Denver throughout the concert it was a delight for the ears and eyes.

I Loved being Red, Black and Blued

by Shoshona on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Endless excitement was at my fingertips. It was definitely the 4th of July on and off the stage. With each performance, from the most sarcastic comedian Lewis Black, down to the high octane energy of the Blues Travelers, every one of them came out like a fireworks show! A constant blast of energy seized me, which was so intoxicationing that it propelled me into a frenzy fever of laughter, song and dancing as if I was a native in the Zulu tribe in Africa. The flurry and commotion of the crowd only intensified this phenomenal pageantry. There is truly no way to rate this show because it was like stepping into Alice in Wonderland. Following the white rabbit down the hole. Than finding yourself walking into a beautiful garden and being invited to a mad tea party sitting beside the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and Dormouse.

Blues Traveler, left me Black and Blue

by Maude on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

The venue is, of course, spectacular! Thanks for bringing performance to the people in such a outstanding environment. I enjoyed both comedians; Lewis Black is an artist in his field and Roy was delightful and fresh. I am a long-time fan of Blues Traveler and their music was good (but not GREAT, like I would expect). The sound seemed slightly off and the mix was, in my opinion, not that great. Black + Honeybears was a real disappointment. I had heard them (once) featured on KBCO and thought I'd enjoy them but found their music lacking. I think their tunes might have been okay, but it was just so loud and distorted that I kept waiting for each number to end. By the time they left the stage, there was very little enthusiasm left in the crowd. They need new sound technicians. Thanks for the chance to say so.

    Awsome Venue

by TheUltimateG on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

I am not a big BT fan but Popper was amazing and you can't beat Red Rocks as far as venues go. Apparently BT has been doing this show at Red Rocks on the 4th of July for quite some time. If you haven't seen BT and want to see em I recommend coming next year to Red Rocks.

    Blues traveler GREAT

by happyjack on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

Great concert with wonderfully cynical Lewis Black being just FUNNY. Blues Traveler were great and John Popper sang fantastic. The big problem I saw was so many on stage smoking cigarettes including John Popper, and two of his musicians. I mean during musician's solos he smoked over and over. And Lewis Black smokes--and he complained that he drank water and was thirsty even after drinking because of the altitude. I think his voice is affected by that. I know he'd have some wise responses to that. But John Popper's voice is great. He is lucky I guess. But he has diabetes and had a heart problem. What gives? And it was wonderful the tribute to Michael Jackson--I'll Be There.

Black & Blue should definitely count as patriotic

by masonae on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

The show was incredible! The opening comedian was hilarious - followed by Lewis Black, who was awesome as always. Then Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears was rocking, and Blues Traveler was unbelievable! Everyone had an awesome set and it was really cool to see the mix. And by far, Blues Traveler is the best background music to a fireworks show. Ever. It was unbelievable!

    Thought you've heard harmonica before???

by Adrock on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

This was my first Blues Traveler show. Yes, I'm a little late to the party! What an amazing show it was. The performance was straight-up, no frills Blues Traveler with more over-the-top harmonica and good grooves than I could have imagined. Red Rocks is an amazing place to see any band but it was particularly kind to these guys. 4th of July fireworks going off in the Denver backdrop was a perfect topping to the performance. I will do this show again next year and the next........

    Black Joe Lewis ruled!

by TheHog on 7/5/09Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison

My friends and I really went to just hang at Red Rocks (which is always awesome) and see the fire works throughout Denver. We're not huge Blues Traveler fans. They had a good performance - wasn't annoyed as much as I was the last time I saw them - seems like all their songs sound the same and the harmonica just starts to get annoying. But they were good. However, Black Joe Lewis was fantastic! High energy, tight band, funky, rockin', and for me stole the evening. And yes, the fire work displays throughout the Denver area were cool to see too.
