Gin Blossoms for the win, can't save Blues Traveler
by Paul T on 7/22/25Toyota Oakdale Theatre - WallingfordRating: 3 out of 5The nostalgia-fueled lineup of Spin Doctors, Gin Blossoms, and Blues Traveler rolled into the Toyota Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT on July 18, 2025. While the show had its high points, it ultimately fell short due to an unfocused and disappointing headlining set.
The Spin Doctors opened the evening and set a solid tone. Though only “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” were instantly familiar to most in the crowd, the band played with conviction and skill. Their lesser-known tracks were performed with energy, showing off their musicianship and giving the audience a reason to pay attention early.
The Gin Blossoms followed and easily delivered the highlight of the night. Their set was polished, melodic, and heartfelt—filled with fan favorites, "Hey Jealousy,""Found Out About You,""Follow You Down,"and "Till I hear It From You,"and a steady stage presence that kept the crowd engaged from start to finish. It was a reminder of why their songs and this band have stood the test of time. (Fan for Life!)
Unfortunately, Blues Traveler closed the show on a disjointed and puzzling note. Lead singer John Popper appeared frustrated from the start, complaining about his fans not working (he said he needs them to keep his glasses from fogging up, which is understandable) and frequently leaving the stage mid-song—including walking off during “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” The band tried to recover with a nearly 20-minute drum solo at the end of the show, which felt out of place and dragged on far too long. Popper was nowhere to be found during the finale drumming, and the band closed with a lackluster cover of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” that failed to bring any real energy or resolution to the night that even Gin Blossoms lead singer Robin Wilson couldn't save. (He tried.) John Popper is a great performer, however on this night, too many things didn't go right for his set. Even the harmonica playing was overly aggressive, and not fun to listen to...
While the evening had flashes of fun—especially from the always rock solid Gin Blossoms and a strong showing by the Spin Doctors—it was ultimately marred by an unfocused and disappointing headlining set that left many fans heading home underwhelmed, including this fan.
