We really didn't know what to expect from Bela and the Flecktones, but all 4 of us were floored by these phenomenal musicians. From Bela, to Victor, to Howard, to Futureman, they were all fantastic. Even bought the new disc which is also great. Sort of a combination of fusion jazz and bluegrass with a smattering of classical background. Absolutely stunning!!! Would love to see them again.
Howard Levy on harmonica and piano was amazing. Futureman on percussion was unique - kind of odd to watch a drummer 10 feet away from a drum set. Wooten on bass pulled some amazing solos, and Bela - didn't smile much, but his musicality and choice of backup musicians was great. The music wasn't turned to high volume, but it had all the more impact for seeming so laid back.
The entire band was incredible. Each member had a solo at different points in the set to show off exactly how skilled they were. The entire performance left you breathless. People were literally having dropped jaws throughout the entire show. Absolutely incredible and I pray I get to see them again someday.
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones is a MUST SEE concert, an amazing experience. Musicians will be in awe of how each band member has complete musical mastery of his instrument(s) . We're talking about technically gifted, world class musicians! Non-musicians will enjoy great music. Can't wait until he comes back next year.
Perfectly lovely venue and evening to hear my favorite musician, Bela. Original Flecktones were the best w/ piano/ harp player
This band surpasses superlatives! Each member is a virtuoso at his instruments. Indeed Futureman could be said to be the sole virtuoso at the Synthaxe Drumitar. This was the First time I have heard Howard Levy live with the band and his dynamic performances on piano and harmonica took the sound in to a great place. Bela... what can be said beyond wonderful! Victor Wooten smiles all the while as he blows every bass heads mind!
The best of the best. Every moment was special. The man is a genius and the group is one organism.
I see these guys everytime the come to town. They never disappoint.
The Flecktones latest iteration landed at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. This is my third concert experience with the Flecktones in this wonderful venue and each time has been an amazing musical adventure. The return of Howard Levy to the line up is tremendous; as much as I enjoyed Jeff Coffin on sax in the past Mr. Levy's command of the harmonica is beyond comprehension and fits in perfectly with the extraordinary chops displayed by the other Flecktones. Levy's contribution on piano was not only a surprise (I wasn't aware of his piano playing skills) but a welcome addition to the tonality of the group. As usual the Flecktones displayed ample mastery of their respective instruments and unusual meters in some of their songs. This is not a "play the songs straight" concert, but rather a demonstration of musicians who not only are extremely versatile with their instruments and push the normal limits of what can be done, but seem to be genuinely having a helluva good time doing it. The set list consisted of starting off with 3 songs from their first three albums (welcoming back Howard Levy in good order), and then did a nice range from their catalog of songs both new and old with features from "Rocket Science" their new release. For those who joined the followers a little late (I started with Greatest Hits and went forward from there), there were lots of familiar tunes but also some selections from the earlier albums which got my interest going to go add them to the collection. This concert to me is for musicians or for those who really appreciate musicians.
Great engagement with the audience, fascinating interaction between the musicians & intriguing diversity in the music.
Concert was absolutely awesome. These are some of the greatest musicians around producing incredibly complex music across several genres. Great acoustics in an intimate setting. Really special and unique sound and performance. A+++
Bela, Victor, Future Man and Howard were amazing! Cain Park was gorgeous, and the lawn was the perfect spot for our family. I loved hearing the music and seeing people from 5 to 65 years old rocking out. Definitely a fantastic time.
Not what I was expecting. Virtually all instrumental. I believe there were vocals is one song. Very eclectic, which can be O.K, but not what I Was hoping for. A pirate and a few bangos does not make an evening for me.
I took my father and fiance to see him for the first time and it was great. We would have preferred to see him in a non-xmas show but a very interesting experience.
Having been turned on to the music of Bela Fleck several years ago, and owning and often listening to several Bela CDs, I thought I was completely acquainted with the music of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, but I was hardly prepared for the experience of seeing and hearing them perform live. Everything was eclectic, just as I had predicted, but the scope and range and musical skill of these performers was just incredible. It is obvious that they are not just masters of their instruments, but they really, REALLY, enjoy playing, for both themselves and their audience. The venue was amazing too, as my wife and I had never seen the inside of the Orpheum Theatre, and its Roaring 20's architectural opulence. It had the look and feel of a command performance! All manner of banjo playing was just amazing. Bela is a true master of his art. Horns, Bass, Percussion, all amazing, but i think the scene stealer was Futureman with the "Electric Tofu Porkchop" synth drum! Incredible! The addition of the Tuvan throat singers just threw the whole experience over the top. We had never heard such sounds before, and felt truly privileged to share in such an amazing musical blending. Next time Bela comes to town, we'll be there!
Oddly, 12/16 was my 4th time to enjoy Bela in a year. 2009 Bela Fleck and Flecktones Christmas, 6/2010 Bela with Edgar Meyer and Zakhir, 7/2010 a repeat of Bela, Edgar and Zakhir and finally 12/2010 Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Ever entertaining and engaging, the group was energetic and truly superb. What a special treat to have the harmonica talent, the strings talent and then Alash!
Best concert ever. These are the world's top musicians in one room for 3 hours. The night was so special, I will never forget it.
Was visiting from out of town, saw the article in the LA Times and got a ticket. I had never heard of this group before but was very pleased with the concert. The sounds were beautiful, as well as the group from Mongolia, which was a pleasant surprise. Am glad I took the time to attend.
The concert was held at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, and we don't believe we have ever been to a more beautiful theatre, the place is gorgeous. We are huge Bela Fleck & The Flecktones fans, but have never been able to see them live. We were absolutely amazed the entire time, the acoustics in that old theatre were perfect, and every single member of their group is incredibly talented. They had special guest musicians, and we were equally amazed by their talents, as well. Do not miss the opportunity to see this group, you will never forget it.
