  • Bela Fleck & Hornsby

by RedMamaandHubby on 8/2/11Oregon Zoo - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing show! Hornsby is always a pure joy to see in concert & the more I learn about & listen to Bela Fleck the more I can appreciate the music they play!! The crowd in Portland was great, met some great people & we all shared in the wonderful experience these musicians brought to us the other night!!

  • Bela Fleck & The Flecktones were awesome!

by Dodikop on 7/9/11Toronto Star Stage at Metro Square - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This show was excellent, a solid 2 hours of music with outstanding solos by each of the Flecktones as well as a special guest on violin during the middle hour or so of the show. It was a treat to have Howard back with the group. It was clear that Victor had quite a following in the audience. They played a good mix of music from their new CD as well as classic Flecktones. The opening act (forget its name) was fine, the sax player was especially noteworthy.

  • Out of 6 times, the best

by guambo on 6/27/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

The horn player is tremendous, but to see the harmonica played in a way as different as Bela is with the banjo, fantastic. (If it makes the horn player feel any better, I can't think of either of your names)

  • The best show of the Jazz Festival

by lllllllllllll on 6/26/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

We saw other performances, but this one by far was the best! Each and every member of the band is an artist. We truly felt like they were not there just to perform, but to share in their musical vision of the world. Hats off to everyone in the band!

  • Greatest musicians alive.

by Peetrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr on 6/25/11Cain Park - Cleveland HeightsRating: 5 out of 5

This band does not disappoint in any way... EVER!! Talent, Showmanship, groove, humor... It's all there! If I could see these guys every day I would.

  • Bele Fleck came through!

    by Yogi48 on 6/17/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

I throughly enjoyed Bele Fleck and the Flecktones. All the guys were amazing...my only disappointment was, w music in that genre, there was no place to get up and dance. I do enjoy the Eastman Theater, however when you bring artists in that are more upbeat and dancing music, it's too bad there is not a place where people like myself can go to enjoy the music along w dancing. I did see a couple move to the front of the side of the stage and danced. It's very hard to just sit there and listen esp. w that sort of music. I know there were people like myself bouncing around in their seats...a bit too conservative place for a band like Bele...seen other shows of theirs and they love it when people are moving to their music!

  • Best of the best!!!

by Splicey on 6/17/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

What an amazing show. I'm not usually a real big jazz fan but when I get a chance to see the best, I take it. Fleck is generally concidered to be the finest banjo play in the world; that I knew. The other members of the band were all of equal quality. Simply put, the entire show was unbelievable.

  • Fantastic show!

Had a blast at this concert. The amount of talent was absolutely insane. Thank you so much, it was a amazing time!

  • Bela Fleck and the original Flecktones!!!

by DQDQ on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! Do not miss this show!! Almost too much talent for one stage! Bela is a banjo-playing maniac! And, don't even get me started on Victor Wooten! The things that man can do with a bass is totally unbelievable!! Howard Levy can make the harmonica sound like any instrument he chooses. And, Future Man is just outrageous! They're back around here in November in Buffalo... I may have to go see them again!

  • Bela Fleck is amazing.

by BanjoBob on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

Well, I tried to book the ticket in January and had no choice of seats, other than what Ticket Master showed me for the price. I did try to get up close so I could see the artists, BUT.... The Music. I am a BG, Country and folk freak. Jazz is not my bag of tea, but, Bela Fleck played it and I was very interested in his interpretation. The virtuosity of the group as a whole and each artist did amazing things with their instruments. Bela on the banjo was great. Every note was clear. The only complaint I might have is the electric banjos did not sound like banjos. But that is Jazz. The harmonica was the most interesting I have EVER heard. Sounds he was able to produce was amazing. I would hear him again if he played other genre's. The bass was great also. The solo was great. The percussion of "Future Man" was interesting. Again, I have never heard electric drums before. A great idea. The insertion of fiddle was maybe a throw back to a past moment and added to the event.

  • Fleck Concert Unbelievable!

by SeasonedMusician on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

The individual musicianship of the 4 original Flecktones plus their violist was over-the-top jaw-dropping; the precision with which they jointly navigated music with tricky time signatures was amazing. We see a lot of excellent musicians in Rochester. Fleck and crew were at a whole 'nother level!

  • Flecktones do it again, only better!

    by Trebor22 on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

I first saw the Original Flecktones at Jazzberries ...a couple weeks before their first CD even came out and have been hooked ever since. We expected bluegrass that night and got Flecktones instead...more than a fair trade. After that show I honestly said...wouldn't it be great if they played the Eastman someday!? Well, 23 years later....perfect. And through many incarnations the Flecktone's have never disappointed with a live performance. I've seen them from Saratoga to Bayfield Wi and to see the worlds best players, on their respective instruments, enjoying each other's ability so much... brings out the best in their audiences as well. Tuesday night was no exception....the harp playing of Howard Levey is so unique it brings a totally different vibe to the 'Tones music. I miss Jeff Coffin as much as anyone, but he can jam with DMB for as long as he wants to! The new music is what we hoped it would be....a variety of styles rolled into a continuous stream of musical excellence! What I like most, and what I feed off of when I see this group is this.... seeing and hearing the Tones live, I feel the pure enjoyment and love of the music and see on their faces the joy they get from playing together. To watch them each turn their head to watch what the soloist is doing...is so cool! They study each other. How often does a band's leader quietly slide off stage in the wings (continuing to play the rhythm) while his band mates play off each other - as Bela did at one point. They enjoy themselves and their abilities more than we do! They play OFF each other, they play WITH each other, and I think they sometimes play AGAINST each other....pushing themselves to do something new or better every time they play. They NEVER phone it in and after 23 years I think this may have been the best show I have seen since that show up in Northern Wisconsin that they played in a tent.....Little Worlds was the new CD then and presented some serious challenges. The Tones never sit still either, so what comes next surely will be wonderful. I may have to go to Buffalo in the fall to catch them again....they will probably have some new tunes by then. The only disappointment Tuesday....no second encore. I felt the night deserved it , but they must have been late for the trip to Telluride.....which is where I first saw Bela....with New Grass Revival and the Flecktones were not even a sparkle in Bela's eye... .

  • Awesome

by okaniney on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

These guys are some of the greatest musicians I've ever seen. Next time, i want the front row. Victor is the best bass player in the world. They are all the best. I can't wait to get their new CD. They seemed to enjoy playing and entertaining. I hope you can get them back again. I really enjoyed the whole scene.

  • by ddps on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 2 out of 5

I'm a huge fan of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, and have seen them 5 times. Unfortunately, this show was probably the worst of those 5 times. I think it's because they were tired after a week of non-stop touring. To make matters worse, the Eastman Theater's acoustics were just wrong for this type of show. The sound was muddy and uninspiring. The best part of the show was seeing Howard Levy back with the gang. What the other three members lacked in energy, Howard made up for in spades. Without him, the concert wouldn't have rated the second star. That said, there were classic songs where I was expecting to hear Howard's harmonica and didn't, adding to the overall disappointment.

  • Phenomenal

by Flecked on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Bela Fleck and the Flecktones with Jeff Coffin, and Bela Fleck and Edgar Myer, but the original lineup is something special. Longtime fans of the band will appreciate their weaving of their old songs and their new ones from 'Rocket Science' (get their new album and give it as many listens as possible before seeing them, its complex). They did not let up for 2 full hours, soloing and feeding off one another. They play the songs as flawlessly as they do on the album, and add their own flair where they want. These are amazing musicians at the peak of their abilities, and you can tell they are having as much fun as the audience is. This show is not to be missed

  • Musician's musicians

by squeezingtom on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

This is what I love - when musicians cross all sorts of boundaries - genre, originality, technology, how instruments were used, they did it all. Each were incredible musicians in their own way, and together they were exponentially tremendous. I'm not sure what Levy was doing with the harmonica, but it sounded like he was playing two at once with different harps with melody and harmonies. Victor is the world's best bassist and it was great just listening to him play on his own - I never heard anyone pull an entire orchestra out of a bass. I really wanted to touch that thing that Roy Futureman was playing - although I thought the drums sounded a bit fuzzy sometimes. Bela lived up to all expectations - with banjos of different tones and music that was classical, jazz, rock, blues all at the same time. I loved the show - first time I've seen the Flecktones, but I'm hooked!!!

  • Each Fleck took my breath away!

by FleckFan on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

All four of the Flecktones are virtuoso performers, and when they play together . . . and . . . off each other, the results are just breathtaking. Bela made it look easy, as always as he picked his amazing selection of instruments. Sometimes he even makes that banjo sound like a cello. Victor Wooten did not disappoint anyone, even though we all had high expectations. I was enchanted with his performance of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed", accompanying himself with a baseline, as he played the melody - all of it with his own two hands on a single instrument! And I REALLY DO want to hold Future Man's percussion creation. You have to see AND hear to believe how great he is. You MUST go to the next opportunity to see Bela Fleck with his Flecktones; you will NOT be disappointed. And you will be rockin' to the music they've left with you even into the next day!

  • Flecktones are AMAZING

by Anonymous on 6/16/11Eastman Theatre - RochesterRating: 5 out of 5

This group was truly amazing and innovative in their technique, composition and performance. They really stretch the boundaries on all fronts.

  • Awesome Show

Seats were great & the performance was even better!! Bela continues to not disappoint.

  • Extraordinary evening

    by redbeard46 on 6/14/11Cain Park - Cleveland HeightsRating: 5 out of 5

Listen these guys are so great I was blown away. Over the years I have listened to Bela's music as featured performer and sitting in with others but nothing prepared me for the dynamism of watching him play off Victor, Howard, and Futureman live. It's jazz at its most lyrical and available peak. Beautiful, intricate and energetic. Very unique. The Evans Theater at Cain Park is a tremendous facility. for my money the sound system was excellent but i sat up front. When I have been there in the past, sitting in the middle the sound was also great.
