Atlanta United FC History

Atlanta United has gone from being one of the newest teams in Major League Soccer to its most supported. Since it joined the league in 2017, the club has led MLS in attendance each year and owns over half of the Top 10 most attended matches in MLS history. Awarded a franchise on April 16, 2014, Atlanta United is owned by Arthur M. Blank and led by club President Darren Eales. The club's opening season in 2017 coincided with the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Originally managed by Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who led the national teams of Paraguay and Argentina, as well as FC Barcelona, before joining Atlanta in 2016, Atlanta United made the postseason in each of its first two seasons and won the 2018 MLS Cup. After winning the title, Martino took the Mexico National Team job, but left MLS with the highest winning percentage (.647) by a head coach in league history. The club then hired Frank de Boer, who led the club to two trophies: the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2019 Campeones Cup, the latter of which Atlanta United became the first MLS club to win after it defeated Mexico's Club América.

In August 2021, Atlanta United announced Gonzalo Pineda as its new head coach. Pineda came from Seattle Sounders FC where he was a member of the coaching staff for five seasons. Under Pineda, Atlanta has qualified for the playoffs twice, in 2021 and 2023.

Atlanta United competes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017. Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted the MLS Cup in 2018, Super Bowl LIII in 2019, the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game, the 2018 MLS All-Star Game and is also the home stadium of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, the SEC Football Championship, the Peach Bowl and the Celebration Bowl.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has retractable seating in order to accommodate an MLS pitch as well as a retractable roof. The stadium can seat 42,500 fans for most MLS matches and can expand to 72,000 for playoff matches and other important games. The club broke the record for the highest-attended single game in MLS history seven times in its first two seasons and currently owns eight of the Top 10 most attended regular season matches in MLS history. A standing-room-only crowd of 73,019 packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 8, 2018, when Atlanta beat the Portland Timbers, 2-0, to win the MLS Cup, giving the city its first major sports championship since the MLB’s Atlanta Braves won the 1995 World Series.

    Disappointing

    We arrived about 30 minutes prior to kickoff only to discover that our tickets did not scan. At your multiple conversations with supervisors, it was clear that we have paid because they pulled up receipts on the iPads. However, they were not allow us in the game because their system wasn't working. Finally, we were able to get the whole group in. We were also promised to phone call from a representative the next day or two to which that never happened. Disappointing! Be wary of using Ticketmaster for future purchases.

    New Soccer Fans

    This was the first time our family attended a professional soccer game, and it was an experience that we will never forget. We enjoyed everything about it, from the opening Prade to the last GOAL. The fans were so loud and into the game it made us feel the game not just seeing it. The topping was Atlanta United won the game. We will definitely go to another game.

    Always a great experience. Great family environment and plenty of parking. Affordable concessions prices and the environment is electrifying whether you like soccer or not. If you've never been, go!

    It was fantastic. Best game of season. I will never understand the fog horn as a noise at sport events. It drives kids crazy and isn’t a fun fan sound. It never has been at any point of a sports game. What can replace that with? Maybe just music. Just saying. That horn is annoying. Most at hockey games.

    Took the whole family to see Atlanta United play. It was our first time seeing them and being in the Benz! Wow, what an incredible place! Just beautiful and clean and huge. We had a fantastic time. The team brought it! Plus it was my daughter’s 40th birthday. A day we will always remember. We will be back again soon!

    The pre-game tail gating was fun, food is delicious, and atmosphere in the stadium/Atlanta United fans was amazing. My friends and I can't wait to go to our next match!!

    Where's the drumline?

    Beautiful sport of soccer no doubt Atlanta United has some of the most entertaining soccer to watch in the league especially in their good games obviously there are some serious injuries of a very important players which can affect the overall entertainment of the soccer that you see on TV or live. So no complaints and all reasonable within the situation the team sees themselves in right now. But I would like to see is a little bit more in the experience before the game I always wonder like in Dallas why do these guys not have a drumline drumming and playing and during the before of the game in the hallways in different points of the stadium so that we feel that we are awed by the music which is live and they're going to play during the game anyways that'd be something nice to see something that adds a little more to the experience before the actual game in the common areas.

    worst game of their history

    They played the worst game in the history of the franchise today. They seemed very disoriented, disorganized and clearly not a match for the second place team they played. Bailey said when the fans are booing the hometown team. And although they kept saying the stands were full, it's clear that at least 25 to 30% of the fans on this sellout did a no-show.
