Atlanta United FC History

Atlanta United has gone from being one of the newest teams in Major League Soccer to its most supported. Since it joined the league in 2017, the club has led MLS in attendance each year and owns over half of the Top 10 most attended matches in MLS history. Awarded a franchise on April 16, 2014, Atlanta United is owned by Arthur M. Blank and led by club President Darren Eales. The club's opening season in 2017 coincided with the opening of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Originally managed by Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who led the national teams of Paraguay and Argentina, as well as FC Barcelona, before joining Atlanta in 2016, Atlanta United made the postseason in each of its first two seasons and won the 2018 MLS Cup. After winning the title, Martino took the Mexico National Team job, but left MLS with the highest winning percentage (.647) by a head coach in league history. The club then hired Frank de Boer, who led the club to two trophies: the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2019 Campeones Cup, the latter of which Atlanta United became the first MLS club to win after it defeated Mexico's Club América.

In August 2021, Atlanta United announced Gonzalo Pineda as its new head coach. Pineda came from Seattle Sounders FC where he was a member of the coaching staff for five seasons. Under Pineda, Atlanta has qualified for the playoffs twice, in 2021 and 2023.

Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Atlanta United competes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017. Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosted the MLS Cup in 2018, Super Bowl LIII in 2019, the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship game, the 2018 MLS All-Star Game and is also the home stadium of the NFL's Atlanta Falcons, the SEC Football Championship, the Peach Bowl and the Celebration Bowl.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has retractable seating in order to accommodate an MLS pitch as well as a retractable roof. The stadium can seat 42,500 fans for most MLS matches and can expand to 72,000 for playoff matches and other important games. The club broke the record for the highest-attended single game in MLS history seven times in its first two seasons and currently owns eight of the Top 10 most attended regular season matches in MLS history. A standing-room-only crowd of 73,019 packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium on December 8, 2018, when Atlanta beat the Portland Timbers, 2-0, to win the MLS Cup, giving the city its first major sports championship since the MLB’s Atlanta Braves won the 1995 World Series.

    Not pleased.

by Chris R. on 9/20/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

All the promotion around Messi playing in this game, led me to pay up for tickets that would’ve been like $30 for what I got, since he didn’t even travel. I understand players not playing, but to get no notice until the night before is stupid. Game was fine.

    Not worth it

by GeorgiaFan on 9/20/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Ticket prices were quadrupled, but Messi didn't show. The game was great, but it was not worth it due to the extra high prices. Very close to fraud, if you ask me.

    Messi missing in Action

by Aincognitoz on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Apparently we ended up buying expensive tickets for my kids who wanted to see Messi as their idol. We bought two more tickets for ourselves to sit in a different section. They announced few hours before the game that he will Not join the game.

    Disappointed

by Anonymus on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

We were so excited to see the G.O.A.T Lionel Messi and booked our tickets @ $460 for 2 tickets. We were not notified that Messi is not playing and the greatest disappointment was, they were selling tickets for $30 on the game day. Really? $200+ tickets for $30+? We spent that much money only for seeing Messi. I don’t think we will ever book in Atlanta.

    Disappointed Messi Fans

    by Kore4 on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Hopefully the League takes a look at charging premium prices for big events then allowing players to not even show up. There were a lot of disappointed Messi fans in the stands. Otherwise, the experience was good

Missed Messi but saw a naked guy

by Double D on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

I got tickets to this game to see Messi… and he didn’t play or even show up because of an injury, so this was an bummer as this was my birthday present but it ok because it was a good game, Atlanta played really well. Tickets and instructions and admittance was good. Bathrooms were clean. I wish there was an easier way to know what food is where… and the other big ask is that they reverse the escalators at the end of the game for leaving, I have terrible knees and going down so many stairs was really painful. Right outside the stadium was a naked man… I’m a nurse so I didn’t really care but I thought it might be upsetting for some, or maybe a lesson to be learned about humanity in these times we live in… anyway, I’d probably go again in the right circumstance

    A great night

by Steph on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

Even though Messi didn’t come to Atlanta it was a great experience. The stadium is easy to get to, the food is super affordable and the fan experience one of the best I’ve ever had. Live DJ, great music. Would definitely go again.

    Bamboozled?

by Disappointed on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

What if Mick Jagger didn’t show for a Rolling Stones concert? ATL United fan here, but paid more specifically to see Messi. Great game by the home team regardless. Not their fault , but ATL United should give v. Inner Miami Tix holders a free future game.

Nice Stadium, Great Staff, Tickets Ugh

by Slouviere on 9/19/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

We originally bought tickets based on the view picture on Ticketmaster. When we got to our seats, we realized that the view picture was not accurate. We were so high up that my child had a panic attack and asked to leave. I was able to find seats in a lower level at this point so I purchased those and we moved. I was amazed after I bought the second pair for cheaper than the first. Then I found out Messi would not be at the game and that is why. I was disappointed when I found out how much tickets had been marked up from regular price due to the possibility of him being at the game. After buying the second set of tickets we had a very good time. I do not think that it is right for tickets to be marked over 4times the regular price by the venue due to one player. And the view pictures definitely need to be updated on Ticketmaster. Or a warning that certain seats sway along with the hand rails in section 314.

1st soccer game & 1st trip to Mercedes stadium

    by Jenny on 9/2/23

Loved every aspect of the evening. We parked at the HD Backyard and so easy (expensive but worth it). Stadium is great. Seats for soccer all have a great view of the game. Atmosphere was fabulous. Fans were great, and personell at stadium very gracious and helpful. Game was exciting and fast pace (personally love soccer). Win some, lose some. Lot of options for food with very reasonable pricing. Bathrooms were very convenient and extemely CLEAN. Thank you. Personell was in the bathroom cleaning continuously making sure area was clean. Look forward to visiting stadium again.

    Disappointing

by Steven on 6/24/23Mercedes-Benz Stadium - Atlanta

We arrived about 30 minutes prior to kickoff only to discover that our tickets did not scan. At your multiple conversations with supervisors, it was clear that we have paid because they pulled up receipts on the iPads. However, they were not allow us in the game because their system wasn't working. Finally, we were able to get the whole group in. We were also promised to phone call from a representative the next day or two to which that never happened. Disappointing! Be wary of using Ticketmaster for future purchases.
