Sum 41 & the Tour of the Setting Sum
by Nick on 4/29/24GLC Live at 20 Monroe - Grand RapidsI was very pleased with the show that Sum 41 put on. I have listened to their music for almost as long as they have been a group, and this was my first time seeing them. Being their farewell tour, it was either now or never, and it is a choice I have no regrets in making. I saw them in a smaller venue compared to an arena, but I really think that was the best way. There were plenty of people there for the size of the building, but it still allowed to be able to be pretty close to the stage, even for the people not in the first few rows of seating or standing room. They might not sound the same as they did long ago, I can't say for certain with this being my first live experience with them, but I thought they sounded well. They played songs from their newly released album, but mostly focused on their previous work, which I think is what they are best known for anyhow. I like songs from all albums, but "the old songs, the older songs, and the oldest songs", as front man Deryck put it, are without a doubt what I was really itching to hear. It was absolutely nostalgic for me! They had an adequate amount of theatrics and crowd involvement, I would say. I didnt find it to be lacking. Something that went a long way for me personally, but may not do it for everyone, is the group seemed very humble, extending appreciation for their listeners and supporters, old and new, young and old, etc, etc multiple times throughout the show. I am saddened that they are disbanding, but they have been together a long time and it is my understanding that the decision was mutual with the members. So, in support, I want them to do what makes them happy with their lives. They will never see this I am certain, but that would be my statement to them, in addition to the following: Thank you for the countless hours of listening you have provided me with over the last few decades and for reciprocating appreciation! Best wishes for the future and any endeavors that may involve.
