About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    Great Concert, Miserable Parking

by Den on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

I am a big James Taylor fan and he did not disappoint. Loved that he gave three encores. Loved the venue even though we were sitting in the stratosphere the audio was good and the jumbo tron gave us good viewing. Also being outside in great weather added to the experience. Now for the parking. I understand it is a state park but at least 25% of the parking spots were taken by beach goers who were tailgating in the open parking spots. In fact they were flaunting that fact as people were coming into the lot to park and see the concert. State police were present and did nothing. This is unacceptable especially considering how expensive the tickets were.

the seats were in a bad spot not as advertised

by BILL R on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

to many people on the landing right behind us making noise very annoying and right next to my seat was a new VIP box or something that there was no indication was there when I ordered the tickets I wouldn't have purchased those seats if I would have known about that

    Great show

by Barbs on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

Saw James Taylor on Sunday night 9/3 at Jones Beach and it was a great show. Such a wonderful storyteller. He performed for two hours in the hot, humid weather. Such a humble, gracious man. He sang some of his hit songs and some not so popular sharing an engaging story about all of them. He dedicated a song to Jimmy Buffet that they sang together often. I loved the opening of the concert. He began with visual film of him singing Something in the Way She Moves in the beginning of his career and the film progressively shows him aging as the song continues until he walks out on stage singing the song live. The show was sold out. James Taylor is a wonderful, talented performer and a special human being.

    Awesome

by KJ on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

James Taylor is an amazing person! His concert was awesome! I love how he interacts with the crowd. He is so down to earth. I had tears in my eyes watching the screen of him as young performer aging through the years just as I have aged along with him. Love, love, love, James Taylor!

Memorable evening with JT at the beach

by Pablo on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

On a perfect summer evening at the Jones Beach Theater, James Taylor and his All-Star Band gave us a memorable evening of song, levity and story that very few performers can give. Plenty of the old favorites were there, but the way they were presented with the backing images and thoughtful introductions, took into account JT’s long career. The opening sequence started with JT at a young age and kept morphing into later and later years until he appeared onstage, a great way to bring us from then to now. Though his voice has aged, he can still bring it with tenderness, blues and amazing talent. His extremely talented backing band perfectly complemented the JT sound. I should also mention that the facility, Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, has a great staff that made navigating my wheelchair bound wife to our seats and other facilities a worry free experience. The facility has a nice open area with tables and seats that made for a relaxing pre-concert meal. Plenty of places to get food, drink and snacks. All in all, a fantastic evening experience.

Seen him before, but this concert was different.

by Best concert I've ever experienced... on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

I am a huge James Taylor fan, and this wasn't the first time seeing him. His All Star band was exactly that, All Star! It was the most personal concert I've ever been to, he literally told a brief story about every song he played. He was amazing, and it was an honor to have sat and listened / watched/ experienced that show.

    Disappointed

by DMG on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

To start off the parking situation at Jones Beach lot 5 was awful. People tailgating were taking up 2-3 spots so many spots were unavailable. The police that were driving around did nothing to alleviate the problem. Extremely annoying when you are looking for a place to park. We have been to many James Taylor concerts and have enjoyed all of them except for this one. Not a fan of his playlist that evening. Overall, a disappointing evening that we were looking forward to.
