About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

The venue was great. The weather was perfect for an outdoor evening concert. And JT was in his usual fine form. Just a terrific evening all around.

by Spider on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

James Taylor was good but not great. His spent a lot of time talking about his life and signing autographs for people in the front row. Was there to hear him sing and not waste time Getting out of the parking lot was a nightmare. Only one exit and two lanes. Took 45 minutes to get out

    Sooo Sweet

by Rescuelady on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

I’ve been wanting to see James Taylor since I was a teenage hippie. I finally got the Chance to see him last Saturday and the wait was worth it. James is as charismatic as one would expect, and so much more. He pauses to tell personal stories between songs ,laughs at himself ,jokes with the audience ,and even took the time after intermission to sign autographs. His entire demeanor is that of a mellow cool guy ,like you would expect. He sang so many of his great songs one after another and as the night went on ,his voice just got better and better. The, at capacity house was full of people like me just loving on James Taylor. What a great “ bucket list” show !!

    what a special evening

by Bob on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

What a beautiful setting - the weather was perfect James Taylor's music was memorable (I finished college when he first performed) and sentimental. His tribute to both Jimmy Buffet and to NYC were very touching The crowd added to the evening. People of all types - young/old, male/female, every ethnic persuasion, Democratic/Republican for one saw a way to be together with kindness to each other.

JT still has a rich, voice and great guitar skills

by Sandy on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

James Taylor played almost all of the classic tunes everyone knows and plenty of more rare selections. His personality was laid back and funny and you could tell he still loves performing and admires his fellow musicians on the stage. It was a truly wonderful concert from beginning to end with breaks for James' talking and the stage was full of interesting effects and images!

This is probably the third time I saw JT and never disappoints. Great songs, very personable, and even had a memorial mention in song about Jimmy Buffett.

    James Taylor - Master Musician

by The answer on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

If you’re looking for a “concert” or show, go see Metallica. If you’re looking for an evening of great music and craftsmanship, go see James Taylor and his all star band. Age has worn well on Mr Taylor. He still has a great calming voice, he is a master musician and you can just see the joy and passion he has for his music. That transfers over to his audience, which was equally entertained by his music and his wit. Great storyteller, great band. Glad I didn’t pass up the opportunity to see James Taylor for the first time, even though I’ve loved his music for 40+ years.

Smooth voice, great stories, great stories!

by Kenny on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

James' voice was as good as it ever was with great song choices! However, JT was much more talkative than past concerts, giving interesting and humorous stories to go.along with each song. JT's concerts are worth every penny, I hope to see him again for the 5th time next year!!! Please come back to Jones Beach!!!!!!

JT- GREAT! Jones Beach - Nightmare!

by nomas on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

James Taylor was awesome! The band was incredible and musically and visually it was a great experience! However, Jones Beach Theatre is a whole 'nother animal. Having to park in the adjacent parking lot/field you are then forced to walk the entire length of the parking lot dodging cars, cross over the entrance where there are three lanes of irritated drivers entering the packed parking lot. You then must trudge a narrow, barely paved path, two by two or single file and then over the the highway on a narrow sidewalk, and down the other side and across THAT parking lot. Let's face it, the James Taylor audience is not young. There were people with canes, walking issues, disabilities slowly trying to navigate this MESS. I am healthy and fit and was exhausted by it all and worried I'd twist an ankle or injure myself. Never again!! Oh, and this is all in the dark - there are no lights! Thankfully on the way back over the highway, the state police blocked off one lane of traffic with flares so we could walk in the street. But a spotlight would have been helpful or even point their headlights to where we were walking! I went through the same mess pre-Covid with Santana. I will NOT be back to Jones Beach. Oh, and forget about going to the women's room. The line was at least 100-200 long. Sorry ladies, I ducked in the exit, otherwise I would have missed half of the concert. I also left before the end of the concert, otherwise I'd be sitting in in the parking lot for an hour or two while thousands of cars attempt to beat each other to exit via the ONE lane out. Yes, only one lane out of the parking lot. They should have a picture of Jones Beach by the word "bottleneck"in the dictionary. Going to a Jones Beach concert used to be a joy and was always a wonderful summer night. Now its a horror show. No thanks, I'll stay home and listen to JT's music. All I can say is if you choose to go, good luck!

Concert was great. Parking was an abomination

by Den on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

I realize that parking was on State Park Property, but come on, beach goers took 20% of the parking spaces to tailgate. State Park Police did nothing. Concert tickets are expensive. Park goers should not be allowed to flagrantly flaunt their use of valuable parking spaces for their lawn chairs.

    Good but…

by Kiki on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

We saw JT at Jones Beach. We have seen him perform live 3 times before, the last time was 7-8 years ago. This performance was a little odd because he covered quite a few songs that were not his including 2 of the 3 encore songs. He also covered a few abstract much lesser heard songs. This was disappointing. Additionally the first song he played his voice sounded very rough as if he was not warmed up enough. His voice did get better as he went along. He also took a 20 minute break toward the end of the evening which was really odd. On the upside he still plays very well and the band and the backing vocals were excellent as was the media presentation throughout the show. It was a fine evening just not as we had seen him before.

    Huge Disappointment

by Disappointed Fan on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

Handyman, How Sweet It Is and Mockingbird, 3 of his biggest hits not played. A bunch of lesser early 1970 songs I could do without. Felt very cheated AND a 20 minute intermission! Are you kidding me. Just awful!!!

    Something missing

by Andre La Plume on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

Show was good. Weather was perfect. Looked to be sold out. Left out Handy Man and I'm sure other big hits. That's what people come to hear. His hits catalog isn't that big that he had to skip them.

    James Taylor at Jones Beach

by Mkr on 9/6/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

The overall experience was lovely, however, the audience was less interactive than I’d hoped. Loved all the special effects and slides. Enjoy the chess pieces and of course all the classic ballads
