About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

Carole at 68, and James at 62 were simply amazing. Carole has gotten better with age. James seemed to be having a good time.

    Could have been better...

by catdancer on 6/4/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

I went to this concert mostly to see James Taylor, but was more impressed by Carole King. I was disappointed by Taylor's rendition's of Country Road & Fire & Rain. I guess it was him changing them up for a live audience, but I'd rather have heard the original versions that I know & love. That's what I paid for & wanted to hear. I was more impressed with Carole King's performance because she sang her songs exactly like I remembered them. THAT'S what I wanted to hear. I love the Arena @ Gwinnett Center. It's in a nice neighborhood with excellent accommodations nearby. I especially liked the revolving stage - that was such a great opportunity for all of the audience to see the performers. Kudo's for that!

Carole and James - Simply Awesome

by Pking48 on 6/4/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

My husband and I were fortunate enough to get tickets for this once in a lifetime show. Words cannot express how truly fantastic their performance was. Their voices blend together and sounded as youthful and clear as they were thirty (or more) years ago. Having the original band was also special and the guys all look great! Carole struts around the stage like she's in her thirties and James showed alot of humor with his boogie struts. I feel truly blessed that we were able to share in the experience.

All I can say is wow! As a longtime fan of both JT & Carole King, my expectations were very high. They delivered an amazing show! They played all the favorites, and their stories and anecdotes between songs were priceless. I only wish I had been closer to the stage. Well worth the price & definitely lives up to the hype!

Concert was wonderful and both Carole King and James Taylor seemed to "hit" every note. The song selection was good. Stage rotated so there was not a bad seat in the house.

James Taylor has always been a fantastic entertainer. Great to see him and long time friend Carole King together! Turning stage was a great feature. Enjoyed venue as well. This is probably the 5th time I've seen James Taylor and this was probably #2 best. Best show ever was at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA.

    Amazing Show!

by AtlantaLIsa on 6/4/10The Arena At Gwinnett Center - Atlanta

We attended the Troubadour Reunion last night in Atlanta and what a show it was! Both Taylor & King sounded like they did years ago. Their obvious respect & affection for each other was evident. They also included a mix of huge hits and personal favorites -- providing backstories for each. I am SO glad that we went to this show.
