About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    Concert good, venue fair

by Petals on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

I had what I thought was a small bag, but I was not allowed to enter with it. I had to check it. It’s hard to stuff wallet, id, cash, phone, keys, etc into your pockets at the last minute and then worry you’ll lose something Otherwise, PCN did a good job. Though the number of the buses bringing you back across the highway seemed to be less than the number running before the show

    Great show parking…not so much

by DHC on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

We saw the show at the PNC Bank Arts Center. The parking lot was almost a mile away from the venue. We had to take a bus over and back. Going over wasn’t bad, but after the show we weren’t sure where to catch the bus. We were on a line, but realized that it was the wrong line. There were no signs or anyone around to ask for help. My friend waited in line and I went looking to see if there was another line for a bus to our lot. We found it, but it took us about an hour to get back to our car. There were only 2 buses going to the lot. They were stuck in traffic for quite a while before they were able to get to the lot and back to pick us up. The concert itself was wonderful, parking accommodations were not great.

How could it not be great

by Kay on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

Excellent concert, as always. Would have liked an explanation for the late start (CNN interview). But overall, terrific evening.

    Still has it going on

by Tom on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

James Taylor is as old as I am and he still has the voice, the artistry and has put together a talented group of singer/songwriters to make his sound even more dynamic.

    Great show

by Bobfiftythree on 9/7/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

I have never seen James Taylor before. But let me tell you. For a performer in his 70’s, I was impressed. Like I said I know his music and to say it performed live was great. The weather was perfect, it was a mellow night of music. No opening act , just James. If you have tickets to see him ENJOY and if you don’t buy some tickets to see him. You won’t be disappointed.

    Excellent entertainer

by Richie on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

Excellent show I had a handicap placket on my rear view mirror and they told me to park in a regular spot that was extremely hard to get in and out of the car.very disappointed with the parking situation. PNC also needs better lighting at night especially around the stairs.

    Sweet Baby James

by Janet C on 9/7/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, we were thrilled to have a parking lot picnic supper and attend the James Taylor concert. We have seen him perform at least 4 other times and we have attended countless concerts at Jones Beach -- all have been spectacular! This show was sold out -- 15,000 fans cheering, singing and applauding! James paid tribute to Jimmy Buffet and everyone was quiet and respectful looking at a collage of memorable photos flashing behind James Taylor. It was a fantastic event and evening. Parking lot exit is a far different story and really needs to be addressed. It took us 40 minutes to exit the parking lot and there is never police presence or any attendants to organize the exiting. Luckily my husband had Siri play James Taylor, he opened the sunroof and all of our windows and the cars around us smiled and waved.

    Fabulous night with a legend!

by LB on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

I'm a Carolina girl living in New Jersey for the moment. When I had an opportunity to see the legendary James Taylor live, I was not about to miss my chance! I was so excited to see that he still delivers a fantastic show! So warm and humble, as always. I particularly enjoyed the video magic that accompanied the songs. And his tribute to the late Jimmy Buffett was beautifully done. I was pleased to see that, as I've also been a lifelong fan of Jimmy's music. What an incredible night! I'd like to also note that the venue was wonderful. Friendly people working there, very organized (particularly those buses from the free parking)!

GOOD concert, poorly- designed ticket system

by Tutorboy on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

Live Nation ticket system is horrible.... can't print tickets! Must use mobile device at the gate showing your ticket. The confirmation page does not indicate where to click to get to ticket. Why no clearly marked button or "click here"indicator"? Very user unfriendly, especially for folks not totally addicted to cell phones, or familiar with the Live Nation protocol?

by JC on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

I’ve been seeing James Taylor for years and he can still hit all the notes! He’s a great summer live musical act. If you’ve never seen him play live don’t wait. Grab a blanket or chair and enjoy a fun evening under the stars of great music. He plays all the favorites and his band is excellent.

Our concert experience of watching and listening to the legendary James Taylor was another lifetime memory. Perfect Evening

by Danny on 9/7/23Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater - Wantagh

Everything was perfect! The parking lot attendants were very helpful and polite! A well behaved tailgating crowd that arrived early and enjoyed the sunshine in the late afternoon The sound was great! Restrooms are easily accessible! One pet peeve is the legroom of the seats. When someone wants out we all gotta get up but what can you do?

    Fun, relaxing, nostalgic

by QT on 9/7/23PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel

Overall had a great time with my mom at the concert. The performance was great by James, the backup singer, and the band. The sound quality of James's mic was off at times and I felt like I could hear his fellow singers stronger than him. Also, I wish the venue didn't allow smoking inside. It was pretty gross to be around.
