    Oklahoma

by Beverly on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

I was so disappointed in what had been done to this play and that I didn’t realize it had been updated. Had I known I would not have attended.

This was a Dark and Disturbing version of "Oklahoma." Bad.

by Musical Enthusiast on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

3rd Rate show that destroyed the one of the greatest musicals in history. Rodgers and Hammerstein would sue for defamation and be awarded billions! Definitely the worst musical I've ever seen. Made the mistake of taking my 13 year old. So nice that he could hear about the upside of committing suicide, which this "version" promoted strongly. Can't believe they were allowed to even use the name "Oklahoma." It tells you a lot when the parking attendants tell you about the procedure to leave the parking garage, if you decide to leave early. Which about 1/3 of the audience did. Wish we had. This show should be called "Woke-lahoma" or :Dark-lahoma". Nothing redeeming about this production. Very upset that the advertising for this show didn't come with content warnings. I'll be looking to get my money back from this farce.

    Waste of time and money

by WreckitJ on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

Terrible. Don’t go. I’m not even sure what I saw. Left at intermission along with most of the other patrons. I want my money back.

    Terrible show

by Angie T on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

We couldn't even make it to intermission. We would have left sooner if we didn't have to sit in the dark for so long. I've never left a show early. It was such a disappointment and a waste of money.

Woke activism ruining a classic Broadway gem

by Theater Lover on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

Before seeing this "reinterpretation" of Oklahoma, I read several reviews from shows in other cities. I thought they were odd because they focused more on who was playing what character than the quality of the show. I thought I'd give it a try anyway. My bad. The staging was lazy as the entire first half of the show was one set that had a bunch of picnic tables (we didn't see the second half because we left at intermission). There was sexualization of some scenes that were not needed and gratuitous. There was an implication that Curly and Jud might be gay. Ado Annie was played by a 300 lb. woman, which is a bit of a stretch for someone that that is supposed to attract several men at one time. My wife had never seen Oklahoma and was confused as to what was going on because they used all the original songs but it was staged in current times. I think the biggest sign that the crowd felt as I did was the fact that there was a mass exodus during the intermission - literally hundreds of people fleeing to their cars. I'm all for having the freedom to place wokeness above all else but write your own play to do that - don't ruin a classic by completely butchering every aspect of it.

Waste of time and an insult to a classic

by BenS. on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

The fiest half was "decent", but the second half was horrible. The weird dance interlude after intermission was completely out of place, disjointed, and bizarre. Many people left at intermission and some left after the "dance" scene. At one point, a couple audience members laughed during what was presumably attempting to be a serious moment. The cast members on stage looked in their direction angrily. To which the audience member shouted "What?! This is stupid." Other members of the audience audiably agreed with the statement. While waiting outside the main doors for my date to use the restroom, I overheard many comments from fellow theater goers. NOT A SINGLE ONE WAS POSITIVE. I would suggest not wasting your time or money on this performance.

    Shouldn't have wasted the money

by just me on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

Would not even give this one star, except the acting was very good by a few. We should have walked out at intermission with many others we saw leaving. Was not expecting a dark, creepy, seductive version of a classic Rogers and Hammerstein good feel movie.

    Oklahoma 2022

by leslie on 10/24/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

Worst play I have ever seen. The writers/directors took a Rodgers and Hammerstein play and completely "reinvented" a play with no purpose, no storyline, and no charm. More than a third of the audience left at intermission. The smart ones.

    Not As Advertised

by AgedArtsLover on 10/23/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

Oklahoma is a timeless classic musical that should remain as written and performed. If the Producer and Director want to modernize the script and acting then it should be so properly advertised as such. At least 10% of the audience left at intermission (seemed more due to empty seats). The 7 piece orchestra did a good job with the adjusted score. The actors and staging were lacking in authentic Oklahoma periodicity thus the effort to modernize the production to represent current social topics. The dance number was too long and overall waste of time especially with the message on the shirt. The write up of the various actors and awards and experience doesn't represent this production.

    Disappointed

by Just T on 10/23/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

I saw Oklahoma years go and it was great, this remake, or whatever it was was horrible! What the heck was that ballet(Dream sequence) deal? Absolutely ridiculous! No set changes, poor acting.

We left early! The show was terrible. I suggest to go back to the classic version.

    Double Thumbs Down!

by Kat on 10/23/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

This musical was extremely disappointing. I would never pay to see this version again. I love Oklahoma but the realism that was added was horribly done and the show did not flow well at all. Many people did not return after the intermission. People were heckling because of the oddity in the show. Definitely a thumbs down for me.

    Amazing reimagined version

by Mary on 10/23/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

Yes it’s dark and makes you think. That’s not a bad thing. All of this is in the original too. Look for it. Very well done.

Genuinely the worst show I have ever seen

    by Mark on 10/22/22

The most enjoyable part was counting the number of people leaving mid-show. If you're in the mood to hate watch something, the direction gives plenty of fodder. Go drunk.

Worst play I have ever seen. Totally ruined Oklahoma

    Horror

by AnneV on 10/22/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

The cast was unimpressive (an attempt to be diverse by checking every demographic was obvious), vocals went from off-pitch to changing octaves and then shrieking. The audience jumped and cringed. The new styling was gag worthy. Vain attempts to amuse held a giggle when slapstick was introduced. Then it got dark and dreary with some ridiculous camera projection. It was sad and depressing. Most of the section I was in left before intermission. The rest left at intermission including the ushers. I wished I had. I have never wanted a refund to a show until now.

    Huge Disappointment

by TC on 10/22/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

I went to ASU Gammage to see Oklahoma! I knew it was a controversial revival production, but I thought it would have some relation to the original Oklahoma!, since it shared every word and the music. Most of the show the characters were standing around talking. There was an extreme sparsity of scenes/changes. The musical (instrument) performance was sub-par, the singing included some good voices, but the staging was less than interesting. A good portion of the audience did not return after intermission. My recollection is the original with choreography by Agnes DeMille, was closer to a ballet than the usual musical. This production had no obvious positives. I didn't like it. In fact I disliked it. I would like to see, after all these years, a real revival of the original. It just didn't need updating. Or, it could have been updated in a richer, more interesting way.

    Not my favorite show

by PW on 10/21/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

The talent of the actors/vocalists was good. I thought the dance just after intermission an odd addition. I had forgotten the details of the original movie so found it lacked in much of a storyline. Just my opinion. After watching original movie the next day I see why play was done in that way. The music was the redeeming factor of both play and movie.

    Very Disappointed

by AK on 10/21/22ASU Gammage - Tempe

I am going to start the review with the sound quality was awful. I don't know if it was the performance or ASU Gammage but you could barely hear the words being spoken. If I had never seen Oklahoma before I would have had never been able to figure out the story. At intermission over half of the audience left. It was a complete disappointment. I have seen several shows redone to have a modern flare but this was an epic failure. It should have never been called Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma because it was far from it. They used the music but it was portrayed very poorly. Only 3 of the actors were Broadway quality the rest seemed board & were just saying the lines. Actual watching this performance was like watch a reading of lines with not much real acting to go along. It was a line run through.
