My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

Audience needs education in theatre etiquette

by Dramamama on 1/29/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

I thought the performance was wonderful. The singers were great, staging creative, set, costumes, all top notch. My issues are with the audience members singing along, a crying baby in the audience, loud candy wrappers and alcohol in the auditorium, spilling wine, cups rolling on the floor. It happens EVERY show. I apologize to the performers, orchestra and conductor for the disrespectful behavior of some audience members. I hope we can do better. Thank you for bringing your beautiful production to Greensboro.

    Beautifully done show except sound

by JB on 1/29/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Despite excellent performances, lighting, and staging, the sound quality was not good, with dialog and vocal performances difficult to hear.

Get Me to the Church - Too Bawdy!

    by Tony on 1/27/24

My wife and I loved it except for the "Get Me to the Church"rendition. I'm quite sure some people like burlesque, but this was, in our opinion, a step over the line, making it way too bawdy and risqué. To see the performers simulate sex acts with grinds and otherwise ... and ladies with dresses hiked up with legs spread ... and leaving little to the imagination ... well, that part of the otherwise wonderful production was disappointing. Again, I'm sure some people like this kind of thing, but it's beyond a stretch to call this a reasonable addition to the original "My Fair Lady."

    Fantastic trip to old London

by Patty on 11/17/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

As one of my favorite shows for 60 years, I was not disappointed in the production. The details in the sets were astounding, the costumes were amazing, and the music was like an old friend. The actors were thoroughly convincing in their parts, and the songs made me very happy. 😊

    Enjoyed it

by MEH on 11/13/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

Very professional. Everyone sang beautifully. When the chorus sings it is a bit hard to understand. Wish it started earlier. It is a 2 hour and 50 min production which makes for a late night.

    High expectations dashed

by Tracy on 11/13/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

I love My Fair Lady. But I love it as it was made. I love to sing along. I love the story. I love the ending. There is a reason these stories are so enduring. The traveling tour did not understand the timelessness of the story, and so it is changed. And not for the better. So disappointing. However, the gentleman who played Henry Higgins was absolutely fantastic, and this is the reason for my 3 stars.

    Not the Classic Musical Anymore

by Mboise on 11/13/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The play would be better advertised as “Director Bartlett Sher's” adaptation of the Broadway classic, My Fair Lady. The production started off beautifully. The sets are well done, the music was fabulous and most of the singing was spot on. But, suddenly after intermission the mood changes and we discover Colonel Hugh Pickering is being portrayed as Gay, and the beloved song Get Me to The Church now takes place in a Gay brothel complete with crotch grinding antics that go on for so long you find yourself admiring the architecture of the walls of the theatre (anything to avoid looking at the debauchery happening on the stage). So much for a family friendly performance. So glad it was only my wife and I and we didn’t buy tickets for the kids. Director Sher tops it all off with the bazar ending of Eliza walking off the set and leaving Professor Higgens all alone as the curtain falls. Certainly not an improvement over the performance in the same location 40 years ago.

    Great Memories

by Oldsoul on 11/13/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

I loved the production! Brought back so many great memories of sitting in our living room, listening to the soundtrack with my Mom and Dad. Knowing all the songs and wanting to sing along made it a special night. Some of the songs brought tears in my eyes, especially The Street Where You Live, my Dad sang that at a fundraiser. Thanks for the memories!

    Almost perfect, without 'liberal'ties

by Reality that's stranger than fiction on 11/12/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

Like most, our families, past and present, have watched this classic movie at least a dozen times. We looked forward to seeing this Broadway version, but I held my breath hoping that they stuck pretty close to the movie and didn't take too many liberal liberties with the script. Don't change classic; nothing new has any originality anymore. The classic songs were all adhered to and enjoyed. The key actors did an excellent job; at times, if you closed your eyes, you could swear you were listening to Rex Harrison or Wilfrid Hyde-White. The actress who played Eliza was kicking off her first nationwide tour after participating in regional plays, so it was exciting to watch. She has a beautiful voice, but will need to continue honing her skills in stage presence; overall she should be very proud of her inaugural performance. Let's be honest, stepping into the shoes of Audrey Hepburn is a nearly impossible feat. Everything was very enjoyable until after the intermission, when the director must have decided that since we were near the end of the play they would take some liberal liberties (which is why we have stopped placing our money in season tickets.) In what was one of the longest scenes of the play, they laboriously displayed the 'get me to the church on time' scene with raunchy moves and men dressed as women. This scene cost any recommendations we would make to others to bother wasting their hard earned dollars. I am confident there will remain many others willing to do so.

    Why change a good thing?

by Yoddlady on 11/12/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

I enjoyed all of it except the “Take Me To The Church On Time” number. It was super inappropriate. They’ve taken a classic and tried to modernize it with drag queens and lewd simulations. I felt bad for families of young children that thought they were taking their kids to see a fun/clean classic. Why can’t people leave a good thing alone instead of trying to always add a modern twist? Super disappointed. :(

Show was exceptional but venue needed some help

by Divagrams on 11/12/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The show was excellent. Cast and orchestra superb. The only thing that I would consider is having an intermission longer than 10 minutes. With a sold out crowd there was no way to make a restroom visit and back to your seat before the second half started.

    Acoustics

by SassySye on 11/12/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

The acoustics were not very good. Could not hear much of the talking but was able to figure out the intent. Overall, impressive and the moment of the sets was spectacular which added to the overall enjoyment of the play.

by Linda B on 11/11/23Morrison Center for the Performing Arts - Boise

Wow!! I would have gone both nights if I could. It was that good. The music, the acting, the energy by the performers, it was all fantastic. I can’t say enough good things about it. Our seats were in Row C and close to the middle. Worth every penny!!

It was very hard to understand the accents, did not care for the actress that played as it wasn’t who we thought it was going to be it was someone else… It was just OK. I don’t really recommend it.

My Fair Lady - Little Rock

by CL on 5/25/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

Outstanding performance! Music and vocals were tremendous. Madeline Powell (Elisa Doolittle) was spectacular and perfectly cast for the role. Jonathan Grunert (Professor Higgins) was well cast. His performance would have been more enjoyable had he spoken more slowly and enunciated more clearly. Michael Hegarty (Alfred Doolittle) along with the cast did an outstanding rendition of I'm Getting Married in the Morning.
