My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

    Disappointing

by Buffie on 5/25/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

To start, the accents at the beginning are so strong it’s almost impossible to understand what is being said. The show gets worse when for no reason other than to prove they can ruin a classic, male cross dressers were added to the father’s scene when he’s singing in the pub about getting married. Men in ill-fitting can can costumes and gaudy makeup shimmy and dance around the stage and Eliza’s dad. Lastly, spoiler alert, there’s no happy ending. The writers/director/producer changed the ending! People went to see a classic and got a bastardized version. It was not worth money. The one and only good quality is Eliza has a beautiful voice and we thoroughly enjoyed listening to her sing.

    It was okay

by Mindy W on 5/24/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

Alfred Doolittle was the best performer in the group. Eliza was just okay. It didn’t draw me in and engage me like I expected. My seats had a partially obstructed view, but we’re not listed as “partially obstructed.” The ushers were a mixed bag. Most were nice, but not very knowledgeable about the venue. Some were completely rude. I wouldn’t recommend the show to others, and I have no plans to ever return to the venue. Three hours and 300.00 essentially wasted.

    Greatly Disappointed

by Didappointed on 5/24/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

    1. Could not understand a word- professor Higgins spoke so fast it was impossible to understand and the Cockney was impossible. 2 Did not appreciate AT ALL taking this beautiful play and inserting your WOKE agenda. The gasps surrounding me were evidence of their shock & disapproval 3. The music was absolutely beautiful. That’s why we gave you 2 stars.

    To Modernized & Mature

by TeacherMom3 on 5/23/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

This play was suggested for kids ages 8+ I decided to take my almost 7 year old. There was a ton more cussing than the movie and the word “damn” was used so frequently the emphasis at the end during “I have grown accustomed to her face” wasn’t even emphasized anymore. Also, the scene where her father sings “I’m getting married in the morning” was very explicit and uncalled for. They had cross-dressers in the scene(this does not fit the 1910-1920 setting. There was also a scene where the father sat on the lap of a lying dancer girl- the audience audibly gasped when this happened because that was way too far to take that scene. This scene was basically super suggestive during its entirety. The father is portrayed as a drunkard and womanizer but this play took that to another level, which did not necessarily fit the time frame setting of the play itself. I enjoyed the play but I will be hesitant to return especially with my daughter because they are trying to be too modern and make it fit popular opinions of the current times rather than stick to the setting and the story.

The cast and ensemble were fantastic! I felt like they brought the characters to life. The singing was amazing and my teenaged son loved it all!

    My Mediocre Musical

by Radio Bob on 5/22/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

My Fair Lady is an iconic musical. Great songs. Provocative on so many levels. The songs and script are so clever and sharp. So this production was actually a letdown. The cast worked hard with huge shoes to fill (Julie Andrews, Rex Harrison, even Audrey Hepburn). In the end, the production needed more than the yeoman-like work. What it didn't need was the tragic attempt to make the musical more "relevant" in 2023 with the misguided gender-bending take on "I'm Getting Married in the Morning" and the new ending that satisfies no one except the most ardent feminist. Finally, a word of warning about Row Y on the main floor at Robinson. If you sit there, be prepared to have the glowing lights from the soundboard glaring in your peripheral vision all play long.

My Fair Lady Is A Lady

by Airplane on 5/22/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

Well acted and sung. This Henry Higgins even sounds like Rex Harrison at times. Eliza Doolittle is lovely and sounds lovely too.The sets are modest but effective. Alfred Doolittle is big, burly and funny. This production could stand next to the original. My Fair Lady is a production well worth seeing.

    Play great Venue sucks

by rbrjr on 5/22/23Robinson Performance Hall - Little Rock

Though I had a hard time understanding the dialogue at the beginning the singing was wonderful and the dancing was great. The costumes were right on point. Even after spending bunches of tax payer $$ the old auditorium is just no comfortable for a three hour play. The seats are to close together and not very cushioned. If someone taller than you sits in front of you, you’re screwed. This was in orchestra center. We again got lost trying to exit nearest our parking, in the rain. Enjoyed the play not the venue. $9 beer- really?

    A Loverly Time...

by anet2184 on 5/20/23Citizens Bank Opera House - Boston

As an early Mother's Day gift, we took our mother our for a day at the theatre to see this beloved classic and had such a good time! The actors were superb in their acting, singing, and dancing, the setting was gorgeous and so full of detail, and the story itself still stands the test of time, raising later conversations about misogyny and the interconnectedness of social class and language in American society today. We had a fantastic time overall, and I had songs from this production stuck in my head for the whole following week!

    Excellent show

by fan of musical theater on 5/8/23The Stanley - Utica

The show was excellent-acting, singing and choreography, all top-notch. However, the audience behavior was terrible. I find it very disrespectful when people talk, use their cell phones, go in and out of the theater, etc. during a performance. The cost of a ticket to the theater makes going to a show an occasional experience for me and I want to enjoy the performance without the disruption by people who do not have any concert etiquette.

‘My Fair Lady’ polished, professional and fun

by RMD on 5/3/23Citizens Bank Opera House - Boston

This was a thoroughly enjoyable evening in the beautiful Opera House. We had great seats and the staff was wonderful, from the greeters to the door attendants to the people moving the crowd along on a rainy night.

    Didn't age well

by amc on 5/3/23Citizens Bank Opera House - Boston

I thought I'd enjoy this more - but it wasn't great. The story doesn't age well and seemed creaky. Actors were great. Just a bummer it couldn't somehow be reworked. Would not recommend.

    Performance great, audience not.

by diamondlil on 5/3/23Citizens Bank Opera House - Boston

My mother and I saw the performance on Sunday 4/30 for an early Mother’s Day gift. The acting, singing, costumes and set design were all fantastic and true to the play. However, our enjoyment was marred by an unruly and inconsiderate audience and the lack of enforcement of rules by the ushers. The majority of the audience ate and drank throughout the show (which I believe is against the rules and is very annoying listening to bags crinkling), talked (I heard a man two rows behind me ask some women in front of him to stop talking), looked at their cell phones (which were supposed to be turned off) and kept coming in late. Generally people behaved like they were at the cinema watching a movie. My mother and I have been long-time theater goers as we love ballet, opera and musicals but we’re reconsidering attending another performance if this is the way audiences are behaving now. Very disappointing especially given the cost of the tickets and disrespectful to the performers.

    Review of My Fair Lady

by CDP on 5/3/23Citizens Bank Opera House - Boston

I hate to be negative but this was a show that was not nearly as good as the My Fair Lady we saw around 15 years ago here in Boston. Some things about it were good, and some just were not. Why? Eliza did not clearly speak all of her lines. Nor did Higgins' house keeper speak clearly -- not at all. Eliza's singing voice was beautiful, but a lot of the joy of the play/musical comes from spoken lines. We thought the "I'm Getting Married in the Morning" was needlessly vulgar. There are too many people squeezed in that theatre. There are too few toilets for the women. The lines at intermission were ridiculous. I did like the way they did the scene shifts. The male leads were all very good.
