My Fair Lady on Tour

With its jubilant revival of My Fair Lady, the Lincoln Center Theater's North American touring production gives audiences the opportunity to enjoy what many have called a "perfect" Broadway musical with new eyes and ears.

Lincoln Center's Tony-nominated revival opened in 2018 and won accolades for director Bartlett Sher's glorious new take on Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, about the platonic relationship that develops when arrogant linguistics professor Henry Higgins wagers he can transform cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a "proper lady." The musical's original Broadway production, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison, premiered in 1956 and set a record for longest-running Broadway show. It has been revived many times, for good reason.

The new production stars Shereen Ahmed as Eliza Doolittle and Laird Mackintosh as Henry Higgins. Ahmed was an understudy in the Broadway production and frequently substituted for leading lady Laura Benanti. Mackintosh's most recent role was in the long-running Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera, whose title role he has also played more than 200 times.

About My Fair Lady the Musical

Lerner and Loewe were at first hesitant to adapt a play that apparently lacked a love story. They arrived at something even grander: a musical about two people whose lives are transformed by their mutual aspirations. They invested songs like "With a Little Bit of Luck," "I Could Have Danced All Night," "On the Street Where You Live" and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with both heart and humor, creating standards of near-universal appeal.

In a My Fair Lady described as "plush and thrilling" by The New York Times, director Bartlett Sher suggests that Eliza Doolittle's urge to reinvent herself is even more powerful than Henry Higgins' desire to win his bet. While Christopher Gattelli's choreography pays tribute to the original Broadway production, set designer Michael Yeargan emphasizes the opulence of Henry Higgins' home, through whose rooms actors roam on a revolving stage. The real magic in this My Fair Lady, however, is the acting and singing. There may not be a passionate romance at the heart of this timeless masterpiece, but there is chemistry aplenty.

    Disappointing

by AnaMaria on 1/31/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

I was terribly disappointed by the drag queen scene during “Get Me to the Church.” It was over the top and inappropriate. If I had known about this scene beforehand, I would not have attended the performance.

    Unbelievable Memories

by Mary P on 1/30/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

I was so excited to see this show so I purchased tickets in August 2023 for my two daughters and my now daughter in law and myself. Our small 400 person high school Bishop McGuinness performed this play in the late 70’s. I was in the Horse Race scene, the Ballroom scene and the Housekeeping scene. Wow great memories but also very amazed at the scenery and costumes. The acting and professionalism was amazing! Thanks for the memories 🩷🩷

    Disappointing show

by Gary on 1/30/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Considering that MY FAIR LADY is one of Broadway's most memorable musicals, this performence was a little off. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. Good performance by the actor playing Professor Higgins, but the other cast members were only so-so, including the actress playing Eliza. Sets, on the other hand, were very good. Seems like 21st-century views also caused the ending to be altered a bit. Show ended rather ambiguously.

    I could've danced all night ---

by Cmarie on 1/30/24Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts - Greensboro

Absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. Pouring rain - met by friendly helpful folks at the door, at the ready with plastic bags for our dripping umbrellas. Every worker we met was friendly and smiling, and it almost felt like we were handed from one to the next from door to seat! Snacks and drinks were good, seats were comfortable, and bathrooms plentiful. And i have to say, as a female - how very much appreciated it was to have someone standing in the middle directing us to open stalls as they cam available! Very cool. The sound in the theater was excellent - could hear the orchestra and even the individual instruments quite well. The set was gorgeous, and the singing magnificent. We had a marvelous time - our first time there, and we will be back!

The music was fantastic, so much so that my wife thought it was a sound track. The acting and singing was wonderful as well. Several of the actors made me believe I was watching in a Broadway theater. It was a wonderful evening experience and a great value for the money.

Enjoyed the performance. I would say a couple of patron’s sitting by us sang along which was a bit annoying.
