The Office! A Musical Parody

The beloved mockumentary reaches a new level of laughs with The Office! A Musical Parody. Fans of the television series will be happy to know that all their favorite characters are on board, as are some key plot elements. When the original British version of The Office premiered in 2001, it brought something completely new to television comedy. Sure, sitcoms had lampooned office culture before, but never with the cringe-inducing level of awkwardness that creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant allowed their characters to display. Then the American Office became an enormous hit series -- and a comedy landmark. In the hands of writers Bob and Tobly McSmith, the stage version adds an unexpected tuneful touch that takes things to another place entirely, and the outrageousness lives on.

The Office! A Musical Parody History

The British send-up of dysfunctional workplace life that was broadcast on BBC from 2001 through 2003 became such a success in America that it couldn't help but inspire a US version. Premiering in 2005, the American Office, starring Steve Carell, lasted for an amazing nine seasons. When Bob and Tobly McSmith took the stateside sitcom series and created a theatrical version, the pair had already let their satirical minds loose on musical takeoffs of everything from Friends to Full House, so by the time they tackled The Office, they were fully primed. But this is far from just a stage re-creation. As a musical parody, the production mines the medium for even more comic gold -- and gives you something to hum on the way home. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the series or getting introduced to the characters for the first time, The Office! A Musical Parody will prove that however insane your own workplace may seem to you, it's comparatively a whole lot more normal than you may think.

    There are no words

    by Holly on 11/12/22

The events aren’t chronological and some quotes are off - most likely for copyright purposes - but what a show! Dwight and Jim’s facial expressions are spot on. Alex Schecter by far steals the show in his role as swing (taking on several roles and nailing each one). They incorporate references to other shows the actors are in and other musicals in the songs and sets. Again, there are no words for how great this was!

The show was wonderful. The actor's were perfect. They were so funny and put on a great show for such a small audience.

    A wonderful show!

by MamaJamaRo on 9/20/22The Theater Center - New York

I attended this show with my daughter in September 2022. She is a huge Office fan, and I am only an occasional viewer of the American version of the Office. We both LOVED this musical parody. The venue is small, but that’s perfect to make you feel like you are in the room of TV show. The cast were very talented and we loved all the characters they played. Go see this show and you will not be disappointed.

    Nailed it!

by Jim on 7/13/22The Theater Center - New York

So much better than expected! The show grabbed every relevant detail of the entire series all the way through the emotional goodbye. The quirkiness of each character was celebrated. I wish I lived in NYC so I could see this show a hundred more times.

    Great afternoon at The Office!!

by Sarah M. on 6/21/22The Theater Center - New York

Amazing, hilarious musical parody of one of our favorite shows - The Office! The talented cast were fantastic (especially Dwight) and we caught every subtle reference to the t.v. show. Loved the theater and being so close to the action, too. We spent the whole show laughing. We would definitely go back again in a second!

I think the show has amazing potential

by I laughed out loud, but cringed a little too on 6/20/22The Theater Center - New York

Obviously being a [rabid] fan of The Office is a requirement for enjoying this show. As a super fan I thoroughly enjoyed the spirit of the show. I laughed a lot. The cast was excellent and singing was great. I especially appreciated the multiple roles played by the Angela/Jim/Kelly characters. I’m afraid Pam seemed miscast to me. But I was definitely cringing in parts due to the over the top crudity. Just too much. It took every borderline moment from the show and jacked up the gross by 10 notches. It didn’t make the show funnier and seemed cheap and lazy. Considering the ever-expanding fan base of the show with each new generation with some tweaks and maybe catchier melodies this show has potential!

The Dundee for best parody goes to….

    by H. W. on 6/13/22

They did a great job with this show — the actors were spot on, loved how seamlessly they switched between characters. Had a couple non office fans with us who thought it stood on its own but as a student of the office it was one great big inside joke. So fun!

A fun time for Office fans - off-peak shows

by TD on 6/7/22The Theater Center - New York

We saw this show during a short weekend to NYC and have begun enjoying shows that take advantage of an off-peak 5pm showtime on Saturdays. It was fun and at a very reasonable price! If you’re looking for Broadway quality entertainment, this likely isn’t for you, but if you want an enjoyable couple of hours to sit back, take in the AC, and laugh, this is a great option.

    Lotsa fun!

by Queenoqueens on 6/7/22The Theater Center - New York

The cast were all super talented - great acting, great singing, great energy. And the show was very funny, well paced and upbeat. Fans of the show will laugh out loud and newbies will find the whole thing hilarious! My only complaint is that there weren't more people there to witness it!!! You should go.

    Amazing

by Steve on 6/1/22The Theater Center - New York

Literally the only issue I had was that the actors' microphones were much lower than the music so it made it hard to hear them at times. Other than that the show was amazing?

    Really funny

by Dave on 5/31/22The Theater Center - New York

Had a great time! I saw reviews from people saying it wasnt funny, but im assuming theyve never watched The Office because the entire show was references to the show. So they probably didnt get any of it.

    My Review

by Richard Ellman on 5/18/22The Theater Center - New York

From the moment the stage lights went on to an audience making up no more than 20% capacity, until the show ended, I was totally bored and not amused by the show. The cast performed well but that was it's only redeeming feature. Take it away from Broadway.

    Fantastic

by The Craig’s in New York on 5/8/22The Theater Center - New York

Fantastic show with all the actors doing a great send up of the show. We’ve never laughed so much during a show in ages. Cast were brilliant in all of the multiple roles some of them were doing. Absolutely loved it and would recommend anyone to go and watch it whether or not they’ve ever watched the show. I’d go and watch it again tomorrow

    Amateur but sweet

by Kat on 5/4/22The Theater Center - New York

Very intimate setting. Probably 20 people in the theater, so as you can imagine, great seats. Amateur production but great execution. Had me laughing and smiling knowing the cast enjoyed putting on the show. Was not aware of the small scale of the event at the time of ticket purchase. However, overall good vibes and a good time for a low cost production

    Amazing!

by Jess on 4/27/22The Theater Center - New York

The show was amazing! It was entertaining the entire time and really captured the major aspects of The Office. I was initially surprised to see how small the theatre is, but I liked the more intimate environment.

    This show deserves a Dundee!

by Italee on 4/19/22The Theater Center - New York

As a fan of The Office, it was perfect! The show did such a wonderful job of covering all nine seasons within the short time frame. The actors performances were dead on, hysterical and did a wonderful job of connecting to the audience. If you are a fan of The Office than this is a must see!
