TOOTSIE ON TOUR

A new comedy musical is coming to Chicago: TOOTSIE.

It's the story of a talented, but difficult-to-work-with actor who will do anything to land the role of a lifetime—including adopting a new persona as Dorothy Michaels.

Starring Tony® nominee Santino Fontana (Cinderella, the film Frozen), this new production features a score by Tony winner David Yazbek (The Band's Visit, The Full Monty), a book by Robert Horn (13, Dame Edna Back with a Vengeance), choreography by Tony nominee Denis Jones (Holiday Inn, Honeymoon in Vegas), and direction by eight-time Tony nominee and Olivier Award winner Scott Ellis (She Loves Me, On The Twentieth Century).

TOOTSIE will play a pre-Broadway engagement at the Cadillac Palace Theatre from September 11- October 14. TOOTSIE goes to Broadway in Spring 2019.

    Tootsie

by Urbanail on 10/16/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The Cadillac Theatre was fantastic; the best leg room I've ever had at a play in Chicago or New York. Tootsie was well cast and the set movements were seamless. The only complaint was that the volume was set too high for some of the chorus numbers, but great for the speaking parts and solos. What a great transformation from screen to stage. I liked all the numbers and the best friend recap was hilarious.

    Great Evening of Fun

by TnTTown on 10/16/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Our group had a wonderful time seeing Tootsie. What a wonderful adaptation of the movie. Even thought I had only 4 hours of sleep the night before, I had no problems staying awake because the performances were so good! I highly recommend it.

    Tootsie funny and worth it

by Jsturg on 10/16/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

We had Saturday afternoon tickets for the first show. The play started out a little slow. The opening number was heard to understand. After that, it was a very fast paced show, good songs, strong performances and some really funny lines. Definitely recommend it.

    Fantastic Talented Cast

by Kinderlein on 10/16/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

We thought the play was very funny (although the dialog was sometimes hard to understand). Most of the music was good - I much prefer production numbers when I see a musical versus individuals singing. The one piece near the beginning was a little long. All in all, we loved it. My only problem with recommending it to some of my friends was the frequent use of the "F" word as well as some other bawdy language. It would have been just as funny without that.

    A Future Broadway Classic

by Jacksjus on 10/16/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

I was not familiar with the story of Tootsie but I walked away both entertained and amazed. The actors and actresses were spectacular. The show had a great balance of drama, singing, dancing, and comedy. The stage weaving in and out between sets was something that I had not seen before. The colors in each set was beautiful.

    Tootsie the Musical - Chicago

by mflesner on 10/15/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

The play just closed in Chicago. But the majority of the cast will be in the play on Broadway next year at the Marriott Marquis Theater. Go see it. It is funnier than the movie and much more engaging and entertaining.

Great cast, Great lyrics, Juvenile jokes

by LetTeddyWin on 10/15/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Tootsie seems destined to be a hit on Broadway. The A-List creative team and a great cast combine for an entertaining evening. As with the 1982 movie, this show must contend with the problem of following a protagonist who's rude, misogynist, and generally unlikeable. Santino Fontana doesn't quite walk that tightrope as well as Dustin Hoffman did in the movie, but to be fair, Hoffman didn't have to sing in two voices! David Yazbek's lively score keeps a long show moving briskly, and his lyrics are very funny. Unfortunately, book writer Robert Horn's jokes dragged down the evening for me. There were too many juvenile sitcom-level jokes that pulled my head out of the action, because they were so corny and out of character. Some examples: "She's so desperate she once choked on her food, just so someone could hold her." "It's like what my father would say when I called him for advice.... How did you get this number?" "I sat alone in my apartment trying to do the Dirty Dancing lift with my cat. Turns out he's not very strong." "My yoga teacher says I created a new position. It's called downward spiral." *CRINGE* I mean, there's a difference between funny dialog and just telling jokes. Robert Horn should go back to sitcoms.

    Rock solid leads

by livesfortheatre on 10/14/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

We really don’t need another musical based on a movie but this was a delightful surprise. The leads are very good and performances in Chicago wellhoned and solid. Switching the story to NYC theatre is a good move, lots of theatre humor and room for big numbers. Tootsie doesn’t remotely approach the emotional depth of The Band’s Visit but David Yazbik delivers some good music for this show. I would not have bothered with this movie to musical if he hadn’t been involved. Enjoy!

The show was very, very funny. Santino Fontana did a great job, with 3 or 4 outstanding supporting performances. Music was ok. Definitely an "A-" to "B+"

"Tootsie" is musical-comedy at its best!

by GrinReaper on 10/13/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

Santino Fontana is amazing as Michael/Dorothy as he's both funny and a very talented singer (as a man and as a woman!!). Loved the updates to the original movie and the subtle changes to freshen it up! I don't seek out musicals as a rule, however this one was funny and enjoyable, which is just what I needed these days!

    "tootsie" works!

    by Theee8r on 10/13/18Cadillac Palace - Chicago

I loved the production! I have been a working theatre director for 47 years so I see productions in my Chicagoland area, go to NYC and when I travel. This show worked. They took a movie that was already very solid and instead of resting on that they added relevant #me2 messages (without jamming it down our throats), added so much humor in terms of jokes, actors delivery, timing, fretted up the characters (especially the room matte neurotic girlfriend), cleaned up the location by having it take place in a broadway production with the guy who is enamored with Tootsie in the show. The sets were fabulous, the choreography creative, the songs varied and effective . . . in fact, all of the production values were top notch. We get to see a lot of pre-broadway productions and this one is the best of the best and most ready to knock 'em dead in NYC!
