About

No one has really ever been able to define themselves and their music like singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo does. His life in music of all kinds sometimes feels like a swirl through the sky, where his songs point out all the majesty and mystery of how he sees the world. The sounds he makes take him places that he might not even predict, but once there, greatness always follows. It's just the way Escovedo is. It has happened over and over for decades, almost like a fateful agreement he has with the cosmos. There is a good chance it cannot be explained, especially by him.

Maybe that's because this is a musician who feels magic, both in himself and the world around him, and is open to the experience of whatever comes his way. It is not always easy, and can have a high demand on how a person lives. But it is the way that Escovedo is always moving forward.

On this new album, Alejandro Escovedo has taken a road rarely traveled, which is totally in keeping with how he has lived his life in music. Echo Dancing is an experiment in how to use the past to shape the future. By recording completely new and repurposed versions of songs from his past, Escovedo actually gets a chance to rewrite his own history. It's also an idea that pushes growth into the present, and asks an artist to see themselves anew. "I always feel that a well-written song can withstand a lot of abuse," Escovedo says. It is an area of creativity that the man has always honored. "Turning a past song inside out leads to discovery of new ideas you might not have understood about the song," he says. "Even lyrical refurbishing has proven helpful and effective. It's like interpreting your own work anew. The songs never seem to be complete. They are always evolving."

    Never Disappointed

by BarbWir on 9/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Went to see the fabulous Shelby Lynne and was blown away by Alejandro. What a magical evening. He was a incredible. Would love to have to chance to sit down and hear some stories. Shelby never fails to impress, voice just gets better and better and just can't get enough. So looking forward to new music and the next tour with the band. LOVE SHELBY LYNNE!!

Wish it had been a full band

by JoeFromMO on 9/27/13Birchmere - Alexandria

I came to see Alejandro Escovedo, having missed him, somehow, for years. Although his acoustic set was OK, it was just not the same as the music I have heard from him in various bands that he has been a part of. I'll try again if he resumes playing with a group backing him. In this concert, even though he had top billing, he opened for Shelby Lynne, who also did an acoustic set. She was OK, but for me, nothing stood out except for one thing, listed below under "favorite moment."

Alejandro + Sensitive Boys = Great entertainment!!

    by Magnolia2013 on 11/5/12Duling Hall - Jackson

The crowd was sparse for the show. Not much lead time on the announcement that they would be here and Al is lesser known in our city than some other Austin musicians. The intimacy of the venue and crowd just made for a more personal experience with these incredible musicians. We got a taste of all of the genres of music this veteran musician has accomplished along with background on most of the songs written and recorded. We loved them all. The incredibly talented band was a huge surprise including a drummer with a distinctive style and sound and Willie on guitar - wow!! Hope to see them in Austin Dec. 29 or the 31st in Chicago.

    Great show... Great venue

by Donttakemynickname on 10/26/12Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I've been a fan of Alejandro Escovedo for many years and he was even better than I expected. The crowd was small - even for a small venue - because Escovedo does not fit into any popular music molds. He is what he is, someone who can play a variety of genres from roots rock to punk to acoustic string music to chicano rock and whatever else strikes his fertile imagination. He guitarist, Billy White, was excellent, but when Alejandro took the lead it was obvious who the 'real' guitarist was. I'd guess Escovedo has forgotten more licks than White knows and could be the most underrated pickers in rock. This was my first time at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and was extremely impressed. It was great venue. It is on the smallish side, which I like because there are no bad seats in the house. It was well run and the staff was incredibly nice. I also like the fact that they serve food.

    What a RUSH!!

    by fern32 on 10/23/12Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

These guys are fantastic. Alejandro plays a hard-driving guitar. Billy White, one of the three Sensitive Boys plays jaw-dropping, superior rock on guitar. There's no synthesizer or extra back-up vocals and there is NO NEED. We will go see them anytime they come back to Atlanta.

    Opening act amazing!

    by Abcxyz99 on 7/31/12Birchmere - Alexandria

My husband is a fan of Alejandro Escovedo, an d I tagged along, not knowing anything about him. I was also unfamiliar with the opening act: The Dunwells. My husband and I both enjoyed the Dunwells immensely. I will definitely be looking for their music and wish them much success. I loved their harmonies. My husband enjoyed the main act, but it was not my cup of tea. That is not a criticism of the music, just my personal taste. The Birchmere is a wonderful venue, and we always have a great time when we attend an event there.

Great Concert But We Needed Ear Plugs

by DutchessofDukeStreet on 7/31/12Birchmere - Alexandria

The concert itself was awesome and the artistry displayed was something special. However, the music was deafeningly loud. All four people in my group literally covered their ears for several of the numbers. I have never done that at any other concert in my life. The space is too small for such loud music. My husband thought his ears might be bleeding by the end of the night! They should have picked that aspect up during the sound check. It was most unfortunate. The opening act: The Dunwells -- was super and I am sure they are destined for great things!

    Too damn loud

by Haycradle on 7/31/12Birchmere - Alexandria

Alejandro has nice presence and a sweet voice, but he went heavy metal on us on Sunday night. My ears are still ringing.

    WAY too loud

    by music01 on 7/31/12Birchmere - Alexandria

The opening act, the Dunwells, was aboslutely fantastic and the highlight of the night. Alejandro's music is good but the sound is way too loud. I left early because I was miserable.

    He's been better

by JC1960 on 6/9/12Bowery Ballroom - New York

Ever since his appearances with Springsteen, Alejandro seems to be playing to that audience. He's a prolific songwriter; we don't need the radio-oriented anthems. And, with such a large body of work, it's annoying to hear him doing covers. "Last to Know" would have been far more welcome than "Beast of Burden".

    Alejandro Rocks

by PostPunk on 6/8/12Bowery Ballroom - New York

He is a lot of fun, from slower moving songs to punkish songs. His sound was great although I was surprised that the crowd was not bigger. It was a great show and will go see him again

    Alejandro Rocks

by Drdave97 on 7/5/11Fine Line Music Cafe - Minneapolis

As much as we love Alejandro Escovedo, my wife and I didn't expect to be as blown away by his performance the other night at the FIne Line in Minneapolis. I guess we expected to enjoy the show, but you never know exactly what to expect in one of his shows. He simply renewed our faith as fans, changing up from the last time we saw him, when he displayed his sensitive side at the Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater a couple years ago. This time, he came out rocking, pumping us up, then modulating into that sensitive side that we knew--only to bring up the energy again later in what was a masterful set.

Alejandro played to a smallish crowd on a Monday night, but brought incredible enthusiasm and musician from his entire band. The crowd made up for numbers with great enthusiasm, and for any fan of Escovedo's music it was a great night. For those who aren't familiar with him, check him out and don't pass up the opportunity to see him live!

I have seen Alejandro the last 2 times he has played the Royal Theater in Danville, then I caught his sccoustic set with the Los Lonely Boys in Bloomington. He is a great musician and a very nice guy. GO SEE THIS SHOW!!! Too bad he is not here a few days earlier to go to the Indy 500!

    Staying awake for Alejandro

    by Cage22 on 3/29/11Montrose Room InterContinental O'Hare - Rosemont

This is the 3rd time I've seen Alejandro in the past 2 years, and once again his performance was outstanding - once he finally got on stage! With most of the crowd at least as old as Alejandro, he didn't get on stage until around 10:00 - past the bedtimes of many audience members. This may be OK for Alejandro, but shows a total lack of disrespect for his "Customers." In addition, he played a short set. His songs, as always, were incredible. The violinist and guitarist that were with him were spectacular. But do us a favor Alejandro - start the concert around 7:30 - and skip the "warm up."
