About

No one has really ever been able to define themselves and their music like singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo does. His life in music of all kinds sometimes feels like a swirl through the sky, where his songs point out all the majesty and mystery of how he sees the world. The sounds he makes take him places that he might not even predict, but once there, greatness always follows. It's just the way Escovedo is. It has happened over and over for decades, almost like a fateful agreement he has with the cosmos. There is a good chance it cannot be explained, especially by him.

Maybe that's because this is a musician who feels magic, both in himself and the world around him, and is open to the experience of whatever comes his way. It is not always easy, and can have a high demand on how a person lives. But it is the way that Escovedo is always moving forward.

On this new album, Alejandro Escovedo has taken a road rarely traveled, which is totally in keeping with how he has lived his life in music. Echo Dancing is an experiment in how to use the past to shape the future. By recording completely new and repurposed versions of songs from his past, Escovedo actually gets a chance to rewrite his own history. It's also an idea that pushes growth into the present, and asks an artist to see themselves anew. "I always feel that a well-written song can withstand a lot of abuse," Escovedo says. It is an area of creativity that the man has always honored. "Turning a past song inside out leads to discovery of new ideas you might not have understood about the song," he says. "Even lyrical refurbishing has proven helpful and effective. It's like interpreting your own work anew. The songs never seem to be complete. They are always evolving."

    Fabulous night under the stars!

by GSDx3 on 8/9/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

Alejandro played his heart out and laid his heart out as he passionately told of his family's good and bad fortunes then played through his music. As the audience lanquished through the heat the band came right out of the shoot with rocking songs that included Everybody Loves Me that had the epolple on their feet. Immune to the high temperatures, humidity and the buzzing of early evening insects he kept his boyish smile intact. With lightning moving in he demonstated why he is so well known for his musical arrangements no matter how many people in is band.

Alejandro Escovedo made a believer of me

by JGeorge on 8/9/09Minnesota Zoo Amphitheater - Apple Valley

A night at the Zoo was much anticipated, having seen other performers in that nice open air venue. It was a hot and sultry nite to say the least. Someone quipped they thought they were playing in Thailand. Romantica was a nice surprise, very melodic and entertaining, although the crowd seemed mostly disinterested. In fact lots of people were downright disrespectful of the artiist, talking loudly, laughing, and constantly popping up for another beer, disrupting my concentration on the music. The singer barely got a nod when he sang this amazing song about the Turf Club in Saint Paul. When Alejandro took the stage, the energy level increased, even though he had to compete with the canned music for a half a minute before he could start. I wasn't a big fan, this was my wife's guy, but I was totally taken in by his haunting melodies, ripping power chords that he would trade back and forth with his lead guitar player. His drummer was nothing short of spectacular, and his lead guitar player was as well. I loved the way he would swtich from some driving rock tune to some ballad about his father's life. Sometimes the tempo would escalate in the middle of the song, really innovative stuff. The whole night lightning flashed to the north threatening to shut down the whole show. Never happened. It was a rare perfromance with the singer from Romanitca jumping up and joining in on the encore the Stones Beast of Burden. All of that said, I have to say I won't be rushing back to the Zoo for another concert. I have never struggled so much to keep focused. We moved once to get away from two women who were more interested in having a discussion during parts of Alejandro's set. They had talked though alot of Romanticas music. Then we got in behind a couple who also had some really important things to say during much of Alejandros' louder stuff, shouting into each other's ears. What is going on here? Are people that bored or what? And the beer consumption was something to behold. At six bucks a pop, this crowd seemed recession proof. Quite ironic considering Alejandro's personal experience with alcohol. Some people might say i should have made an issue about the talking, but I wasn't there to inform someone about concert etiquette, I was there to hear amazing music and it was! I know others were impressed as well. For those that had important conversations that couldn't wait, or really needed a good beer buzz, next time, stay home, or go to your local bar. Leave the concerts to those of us who can pay attention, please.

    Alejandro Escovedo and band rocked!

by ElSupremo on 8/2/09Aladdin Theater - Portland

I first saw Alejandro on Austin City Limits; waited for him to come to Portland ever since. The opening act took way too much time, pushed the headliner set back to a ten o'clock start. The music was terrific; can't say the same for my date. I look forward to seeing Alejandro Escovedo the next time he's in Portland.

    Well worth the wait...

    by rde56 on 7/31/09Aladdin Theater - Portland

I had a lot of fun. The wait for him to come on was long. It was an interesting billing with a great open by Jessie Winchester. He was typically mellow and very funny. A beautiful voice and interesting lyrics. We were surprised by Colin Gilmore (son of Jimmy Dale) who opened for Jessie. He was good... but he was bucking a loud crowd who were settling in with their beers and wondering who this young guy was. Eventually, around 10pm Alejandro came on... and he got folks on their feet. I particularly like the mixed set he played. Only a few from the new record, yet some great interesting and energetic stuff. His band! It has been a while since I've seen a band that tight, his lead guitarist was amazing, all were quite good. There was a mix of punk, rockabilly, mextex, flamenco and surf guitar influences throughout ... really a fun fluid blend of styles. All with energy. Of note was the revisit of the Chelsie Hotel 78 song and the Godsmack song Sex Beat... both added a touch of the psychedelic to the show. In the end, it was worth the wait and I'd love to see him again soon.

    Alejandro Escovedo was EXCELLENT!

by jpmett on 7/15/09The Ark - Ann Arbor

One of the best shows I've ever seen. Alejandro and Co. bend over backwards to make the show a crowd pleaser, from chatting with the audience to playing amid the seats. Great to see such a great talent that still cares about his fans. The music was incredible, the artists were incredible, the show was incredible! When Alejandro comes back, I'll be there!

    Alejandro Escovedo Rocked!

by Bafflegirl on 7/15/09The Pageant - St Louis

Alejandro brought a stripped down band to the Pagaent and rocked old school. Screaming guitars, complete with feedback, and pounding drums made for a sound completely different than what I was expecting. Having never seen him live, I had imagined the full lush sounds of a bigger band, strings, backing vocals, etc that appear on many of his albums. The Pete Townsend style windmills only added to the occassion.
