About

No one has really ever been able to define themselves and their music like singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo does. His life in music of all kinds sometimes feels like a swirl through the sky, where his songs point out all the majesty and mystery of how he sees the world. The sounds he makes take him places that he might not even predict, but once there, greatness always follows. It's just the way Escovedo is. It has happened over and over for decades, almost like a fateful agreement he has with the cosmos. There is a good chance it cannot be explained, especially by him.

Maybe that's because this is a musician who feels magic, both in himself and the world around him, and is open to the experience of whatever comes his way. It is not always easy, and can have a high demand on how a person lives. But it is the way that Escovedo is always moving forward.

On this new album, Alejandro Escovedo has taken a road rarely traveled, which is totally in keeping with how he has lived his life in music. Echo Dancing is an experiment in how to use the past to shape the future. By recording completely new and repurposed versions of songs from his past, Escovedo actually gets a chance to rewrite his own history. It's also an idea that pushes growth into the present, and asks an artist to see themselves anew. "I always feel that a well-written song can withstand a lot of abuse," Escovedo says. It is an area of creativity that the man has always honored. "Turning a past song inside out leads to discovery of new ideas you might not have understood about the song," he says. "Even lyrical refurbishing has proven helpful and effective. It's like interpreting your own work anew. The songs never seem to be complete. They are always evolving."

    great singer songwriter

    by dancin1 on 3/28/11Montrose Room InterContinental O'Hare - Rosemont

Alejandro Escovedo is a soulful singer song writer. It was a great concert, even though I had purchased tickets without realizing that it was an acoustic show and had expected something different.

    Alejandro never disappoints

by Artmouse on 3/28/11Montrose Room InterContinental O'Hare - Rosemont

My husband and I are big fans and really think he should be much more well known... But then we may not be able to see him in such an intimate setting. Alejandro played with David Pulkingham on guitar and violinist Susan Voelz. His ballads were beautiful in this setting but the trio was still able to do great justice to his more rocking songs like "Castanets." This was a real treat! The two acoustic numbers they did out in the audience ("Rosalie" and "I Wish I Were Your Mother") were sublime. Alejandro dedicated the latter to his close friend and social networking guru, Mike Thompson's wife, Lajuan, who had just passed away. It was such a touching and intimate moment and we feel honored to have shared it with him. The Montrose Room's acoustics are about the best of any venue I have been. We had not heard of the place before, but found out about the show on Alejandro's Facebook page. He always shares wonderful little stories about his life or history of a particular song in performance which in most settings are difficult to catch. Saturday night we heard every word. It is really a nice intimate space -- I feel a bit spoiled now! We'll definitely be checking the venue's calendar from now on.

    Alejandro is still unforgettable

by Zooeybat on 3/28/11Montrose Room InterContinental O'Hare - Rosemont

This was my second time seeing Escovedo live and I will always try to see him when he's in town. I won't even pretend that he is a friend, but that is how he makes his audience feel. The Melrose Room at the Intercontinental Hotel O'Hare was cozy and had excellent acoustics. I will always keep an eye out for shows there.

    Alejandro Escovedo was fan-damn-tastic

by fredshero on 1/27/11Avalon Theatre - Easton

Just a fabulous concert at the Avalon Theatre in Easton, Maryland. A great combination of rockin' seventies type guitar music, acoustic/electric blend, and uniqueness that provided the audience with a memorable evening of good tunes. Didn't know his catalog that well, just latest album and stuff played on WRNR in Annapolis. Get a seat at one of his shows ASAP. You won't be disappointed.

    Very personal and rocking concert

by Wendal on 10/18/10Madison Theater - Covington

Alejandro showed an incredible mix of music Saturday night at Madison Theater in Covington KY. The crowd was a bit sparse-- about half filled, but that was not a problem. The beginning of the set was straight rocking, mostly from the new album. The rest of show mixed in old tunes and showed off some great acoustic sounds. One high points was his lead guitarist... the "white guy from Austin" who blistered through rock, jazz, and many traditional mexican tunes. He also filled in nicely for the cello parts which were obviously missing from the simple four piece band. He turned the accoustic guitar into a tension building cello back ground that was the high point of the show. It may sound corny but by the end of the show, the crowd and performer really connected., primarily through Al's ability to tell stories and connect people with his music. Great show. "I like her better when she walks away"

    Alejandro Rocks the Madison

by bearcatmike on 10/18/10Madison Theater - Covington

Despite some novices in the crowd who cried out for covers ( Stones) and the fact that America has become more rude ( talking during quite acoustic numbers), and the Alejandro made a pointed stare during one such moment, this band is incredible. I have seen all of the iconic bands that some fans wish to see Alejandro cover ( see Stones), and his performances rank right beside the Faces in 1974. In other words, he and his band are not to be missed if you truly enjoy great music. And Alejandro, your catalog of songs are more than enough for you to choose from. We don't need covers. By the way, Sex Beat, the performance was spectacular. A highlite of the evening. Psychedlic, bluesy, rock at its best. Thanks.

    Escovedo in brilliant form

by Glengarry on 9/28/10Birchmere - Alexandria

I have been listening to Escovedo's albums for some time now but had nver had the opportuinity to see him live in the UK. It was fortuitous that he was playing the Birchmere during the week I was attending a course in DC. First of all, I think the Birchmere is a fabulous venue - good food beforehand and a great view of the stage. The first 6 songs were taken from his latest album, Street songs of love, and were dynamite versions. His backing band, the Sensitive Boys (what a great name!), were incredibly good, both on the rockier songs and the more gentle, reflective songs such as Rosalie and the beautiful instrumental, Road House Blue (a tribute to the late Stephen Bruton). I enjoyed the show immensely - a real highlight of my trip to Washngnton.

    AE. ROCKS OUT!

by novelear on 9/23/10Birchmere - Alexandria

I've never heard such loud music at the Birchmere, and it was GREAT. He did half a dozen songs from the new album, pure rock n roll, and a sampling from his 30-year career post punk (the Nuns). His lead guitarist, David Palkingham (sp?) was a six-string wonder.

    Escovedo and The SB's ROCK!!

    by JPB72 on 9/23/10Birchmere - Alexandria

Every time I see Alejandro and his band, they never disappoint, whether he's with a full band or his orchestra. The other night at the Birchmere was no exception. They rocked!! And Alejandro's laid back style was great to witness as you could tell he was really comfortable with his surroundings. Beautiful rock n' roll-plain and simple.

Versatile, professional, sounding great and representing some of the finest writing of the last couple of decades, Alejandro played with emotion, energy and precision Saturday night at the Record Bar. Sensative Boys were tight as could be behind him, a great show.

Alejandro Escovedo & the Sensitive Boys

by WTexasAlFan on 8/29/10The Record Bar - Kansas City

Amazing show by Al & the Boys! Towards the end of a terrific set, opener Amy Cook told us that Alejandro was going to rock our asses off and she was right! Al started the show by dedicating it to a recently departed friend whose birthday had been the day before. He then proceeded to torch the place in memory of his friend. Frentic versions of "Always a Friend," "Anchor," "Tender Heart" and "Street Songs of Love" were followed by slow, aching versions of "Fort Worth Blue," "Sister Lost Soul," "Down in the Bowery" and "Rosalie." Feedback and pain highlighted the always great "Chelsea Street Hotel '78". "Real Animal" proved that Alejandro is more Iggy than Iggy. A revamped version of "Castanets" got the crowd singing with the band. "Sensitive Boys", a rocking new song they will soon record and a fabulous crowd pleasing "Beast of Burden" closed the show. "Beast of Burden" was once a Stones song but once you see Alejandro do it, there is no other version. He preaches, he prays, he lifts the song to heights you've never heard! Go see him! Feel his pain, feel his love, feel his music. It will change your life!

    A Spectacular Family Affair!

by Fivecents on 8/12/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

I've had the pleasure of seeing Alejandro and his incredible band a couple of times before and they've always been great, but last night at the El Rey in Los Angeles was really something special. Over the course of the evening the group was joined by a spectacular line-up of guests, including Lucinda Williams and Peter Case, as well as Alejandro's brothers Pete (legendary Santana percussionist), Javier, Juan, niece Sheila E., and others. The result was a rousing, moving, warm set of genuinely great music. Clearly a group of inspired musicians who love each other and love doing what they do. Obviously there's no guarantee of a repeat line-up at other venues, but if you ever get a chance to see this Texas treasure of a band -- GO! (And watch for them on The Tonight Show, tomorrow, Friday August 13, 2010)

    Alejandro, family and friends

by TAK2 on 8/12/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Alejandro, brothers Pete, Mario and Javier, and niece(?) Sheila (E), along with friends Peter Case, Ryan Bingham, Lucinda Williams, Doug Pettibone, et al, absolutely blew the roof off of the El Rey! One of the best shows that I have ever seen. If you weren't there, you really blew it.
