About
Disney’s ALADDIN is a dazzling and extravagant showcase of special effects — including a flying magic carpet during “A Whole New World” — as well as glittering-gold costumes and art deco-style sets that mirror the grandeur of a Busby Berkeley musical. One of Broadway’s most popular musical comedies, the show opened at the legendary New Amsterdam Theatre on March 20, 2014, and has since broken numerous house records (grossing over $500 million on Broadway). Eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken composed the show’s music. The lyrics are by two-time Oscar winner Howard Ashman (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid), as well as three-time Tony Award and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice and six-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin. The book is by Beguelin and direction/choreography is by two-time Tony Award-winner Casey Nicholaw.

A whole new world!
by TheBestNJGrams on 4/1/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5The characters were so much fun! This was a birthday present for my 4 yr. old granddaughter and it was her first Broadway show. She was mesmerized! Truth be told, I would have gone to see it even without her.
Just What You Would Expect from Disney
by DisneyDuo on 4/1/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5Great production. A lot of new songs were introduced.

Good but not Amazing
by TheWalkingDead on 4/1/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5Enjoyed the show - but, would have thought it would be funnier - especially since it's a "comedy." - The Aladdin show @ Disney Land, California was better!
Aladdin was glittery and fun!
by labinct on 4/1/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5We went to see this on a cold, rainy night and it cheered us up instantly! Michael James Scott as the Genie was awesome! Funny and sweet with tons of singing and dancing - this cast works very hard on this show. The costumes were beautiful and the humore was infectious!
Aladdin
by tyoyowoowooj on 4/1/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5The best disney broadway musical. It was amazing!!!
Visually stunning, with some catchy new tunes!
by PinkPoppet on 4/1/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5I have seen a lot of Broadway musicals, and I believe this is the most visually appealing, colorful, sparkly, and magical one yet! The sets were fantastic and captured the spirit of Agrabah as imagined by the creators of the movie. The most spectacular number is the showstopping "Friend Like Me" (and it did stop the show--for several minutes--while the audience loudly whooped and applauded). There are also a number of visual tricks that will leave many wondering, "How did they do that?". Particularly worth mentioning is the magic carpet ride, which was executed brilliantly (I was on the seventh row orchestra and I couldn't figure out the mechanics of it). Several additional songs made for a more full-fledged musical than the movie version, and they were enjoyable! I especially liked "A Million Miles Away" and "Proud of Your Boy." As far as the cast, I am at a disadvantage, because BOTH the Genie and Aladdin (Argh, I SO wanted to see Adam Jacobs) were played by understudies. Standby Genie, Michael James Scott, was very good (although I have no basis for comparison to Iglehart), and I didn't feel cheated in that regard. But I am sorry to say that Aladdin's understudy, Joshua Dela Cruz, seemed rather overwhelmed by this vocally and physically demanding role. He seemed out of breath and a bit pitchy during the more active songs (particularly "One Jump Ahead") and his voice was not "Disney" enough for my taste (that is, he had a rather pronounced vibrato). He had zero chemistry with Courtney Reed (who otherwise gave a quite capable performance as Jasmine) and I think dragged her performance down a bit when they were on stage together. There were also some wardrobe malfunctions with Aladdin's turban, which kept getting caught on the microphone; this is easily forgivable, considering it is so early in the run AND Dela Cruz was clearly not used to playing this role. Jonathan Freeman was fantastic; as many probably know, he was the voice of Jafar in the movie, and his stage presence as the villain did not disappoint. My only criticism of the Broadway version is the choice to replace Aladdin's monkey Abu and Jasmine's tiger Rajah with a set of three friends for Aladdin and three handmaidens for Jasmine. I realize the challenges of taking an animal from the animated feature to the stage (although DIsney has succeeded in this regard before), and it is true that Abu and Rajah, unlike Iago (who is cleverly cast as a crony of Jafar), don't have integral speaking roles, but function more as an audience for Jasmine and Aladdin to share their thoughts with. Still, I'm not sure that the solution was optimal. All six of these characters are extraneous to the plot, despite the attempt to give Aladdin's friends some purpose by involving them in freeing Aladdin from prison. But still, on the whole, it was a terrific musical, and well worth the money!
I felt like baby Anna watching Elsa "do the magic"
by LianKrin on 3/31/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5In case that reference went over your head, it was like being a 5 year old at a magic show. It was light-hearted, enthralling, vocally impressive, well paced, and a good fit for both kids and adults. Like any well written family show, kids get the visual, adults get the script. I had not intended on seeing Aladdin when I went to New York and ended up going on the request of a friend. Yet now I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a little happiness and magic in their life. Just go see the show. It'll be good for you.
Aladdin
by MorningStar27 on 3/31/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5Went for my daughter's 21st birthday she and my other daughter loved it. Fan-tas-tic, true to disney movie. Genie was amazing, funny and energetic truly engaged the audience with his performance. Musical numbers were genius.
Alladin the Musical
by koolaid1 on 3/31/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5The Genie was amazing. Costuming and choreography were excellent. A bit disappointing that we had several understudies in the performance given that the show has only been open a week.
Aladdin on Broadway creates a Whole New World
by rafferdx on 3/31/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5As a huge fan of Disney, and of Broadway, I was ecstatic when I heard Aladdin would be coming to the Great White Way. As one of my all-time favorite movies, I was a little concerned that the final result would be disappointing. Those concerns were misplaced, as the final result was everything I could have hoped for and more. The entire show moved from one spectacle to another, each one as enjoyable, if not more so, than the last. The new songs and characters honored the spirit of the movie, while simultaneously forging their own path. I was belly laughing almost the entire show, and when the curtain dropped barely two and a half hours later, it seemed like no time had passed at all. Out of the almost dozen Broadway shows and national tours I've seen, this was by far the best and my personal favorite, and I'll likely go see it again before the original cast moves on. Highly recommend it!
Aladdin was AMAZING
by Countryboy61614 on 3/31/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5Aladdin is an incredible show from beginning to end. The acting, dancing and singing was superb. Loved all the costumes, wow, what a lot of quick changes!
aladdin amazing!
by perfectpax on 3/31/14New Amsterdam Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5Overall the play was very similar to the movie, but the Genie had some updated lines. Music, costumes and performances were spectacular. However, the sets and effects were lacking for a Disney production. I was disappointed. Have seen Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, Lion King and Little Mermaid. All were better in that area.
