  • A Christmas Carol is not to be missed!

by GinaLynnB on 12/6/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I saw the Ira David Wood, III version of A Christmas Carol for the first time at DPAC last year. We loved it! Scrooge (played by Ira the IV) was fabulously funny but people kept telling us that we had to see it again with Ira David Wood, III playing Scrooge because he is the best. We couldn't imagine anyone playing Scrooge more perfectly than what we had already seen, however, we had so much fun last year that we decided to go again this year when it played again at DPAC. Again, we loved it! It was the same and it was different. They manage to keep it fresh while telling the same story. I must say that Ira David Wood, III as Scrooge was also amazing. On the way home, we tried to decide who had played Scrooge the best, Father (who usually plays the role) or the son (who played the role last year while his father recuperated from heart surgery). We couldn't choose one over the other. They are equally magnificent! We will probably go again and just make it a Christmas tradition.

  • A Christmas Carol.....Whitty

by MindReaders on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

This play wasn't quite what we expected to see but were pleasantly surprised at the humor. We were also pleased that although the take on the play was a bit different the message was still the same.

  • A Cristmas Carol was different!

by JMinAM on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

I knew it was a musical version but was surprised to find that it was nothing like I had heard before. Also it contained some comedy in it pertaining to events happening now in the world! Totally unexpected!

  • A Christmas Carol was FABULOUS!

I've been told for years how great this show was and finally got to see it! It was even better than my expectations! LOVED it! David Ira Woods is a genius!

  • A Christmas Carol was a great disappointment!

by Anonymous on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5

I was extremely disappointed in the play. Every year since I was a child, I have looked forward to seeing 'A Christmas Carol.' When we arrived I was surprised to find out it was a musical. And then when the play was so different than the book, I thought I would try to enjoy the music (all had great voices) but with the juvenile jokes and slapstick humor, we left at the intermission. We had planned a special weekend around this play. We won't be coming back and we definitely would not recomment it to friends.

  • Classic Christmas show

by searp on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Casting excellent. Ira Wood creative & fabulous as ever and looks wonderful! Our whole family enjoys this Christmas tradition. We are grateful they still haven't changed the heart of the Charles Dickens story, but only added some creative touches for laughter. Some political satire sprinkled in, but not too much that it is maddening.

  • A Christmas Carol was awesome

by easybreeze on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I must say that I was excited to see A Christmas Carol. I attended with my husband, son and daughter in law. I have always been a huge fan of the story. I was unprepared and delightfully surprised that this was not quite the story I remembered. It had the same meaning for sure. However, it was so entertaining and funny as well. I will always remember with fond memories this version of A Christmas Carol. I would and have recommended this show to my friends and family. Awesome job. And if my actual opinion counted, I would give it 5 stars.... out of 5 of course.

This is the first time in 16 years, that my husband and I have been able to go see it. We were not disappointed! Ira David Wood's production was just as I remembered it. Wonderful! A fun way to spend an evening!! I really enjoyed meeting Ira David Wood after the show at his book signing too!!!

Ira David Wood III's opening night of his return as Scrooge. Unforgettable. Awesome show to kick off the season.

  • A marvelous play!

by NCDiva80 on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

What a brilliant adaptation of the original play, "A Christmas Carol". This was my first attendance at Ira David Wood's adaptation and it won't be my last. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this old play had been updated to the 21st century, complete with current events and humor. The acting was superb and all of the performers seemed to enjoy what they were doing. The set decorations and costumes were, likewise, great and added to the authenticity of the performance. We truly enjoyed ourselves and left the DPAC with lots of Christmas spirit. This play will be an annual event with my family from now on! Great job!

I had seen it years ago several times in Raleigh. It seemed updated, but it was wonderful, delightful as always!!!

  • Great Show, Great Spirit

by Christopher274 on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

The show is great, and DPAC should look at the sound system as it seems to be a bit lopsided. As in past shows, the sound was sometimes too loud and in other it was too soft. shows I have seen in Raleigh don't seem to have t his issue. Go to this show

terrible! It's a re-write of a classic with musical acts. We knew this but we thought if it has run for 30+ yrs it had to be ok. It was not! Tasteless does not begin to describe it. So much of it was blatant & poorly done parodies of current events, often so local as to be incomprehensible to those of us from all of an 1 1/2 hour away....and so irrelevant (& irreverent), to the original storyline that it was often confusing. With rare exception the acting & dancing quality was about on par with a high school production. We took inlaws & were horrified that this was their first exposure to "fine" theater. It dragged on & on! The program tells of the playwright's near death experience last year... some cardiac event. While we applaud his recovery, the man's ego was staggering..nauseating. He may be considered a local treasure, but unless you are very, very local...stay away. Nice venue though. Very nice area, several great restaurants, etc..

  • A Great Way to Start Your Holiday!

by flowerchildNC on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

We finally went to see the amazing "A Christmas Carol" with Ira David Wood II and the cast from Theatre in the Park and boy were we glad we did! It was even better than I hoped for with great quips from today interweaved into the story, along with great music and dancing. The sets were very professional and the band was tremendous.

  • Best EVER!

by VickieF on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I saw this about 20 years ago and really liked it then. I took 3 friends to see it this time for their Christmas gifts and we all loved it, the wit of it and look forward to seeing it again. One who had never seen Wood's production was expecting a sad tale, she was pleasantly surprised to laugh through a lot of it. BRAVO!! Hope I don't have to wait 20 years to see it again.

  • Great show!

A contemporary spin on an old classic. Funny cast, wonderful singing, and same great story you remember from when you were a child. I would see it again.

  • A Christmas Carol was funny and unpredictable.

by cokenumberone on 12/5/11DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Really awesome. Very funny, yet had it's warm and fuzzy moments. The characters are so great, even the child actors. This was my first time seeing this. It won't be my last. Very much worth the price of tickets. The events during the play are very unpredictable.

The show was awesome! Well choreographed and scripted! Scrooge was amazing and it was very contemporary and relevant to what is going on today. I can't wait for next year!
