  • The tradition continues w/o interruption

by shadycat7 on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Ira David Wood IV did a fine job in his dad's role as Ebenezer Scrooge. His mannerisms were uncannily similar to the elder Wood's. Overall, the sad parts were as sad as ever and the upbeat parts were joyous as ever. TIP did not miss a beat with this year's production!

  • Very Disappointed

I bought these tickets as a surprise for my husband. We were both so excited when we got there. Just a few minutes into the play I wondered if this had been a total waste...it was. The theatre is a place where you should be able to escape everyday life, the dumb advertisements thrown in your face and the silly phrases people have coined. We heard everything from "Oh no he didn't" to references to Geico and several other companies and their slogans. And REALLY? There was a reference to an errection ("if you experience this for more than 4 hours..." you know the commercial)????!!!?? Ridiculous. For just a couple of hours I was hoping to be taken back to the 1800s, to sit and enjoy the classic tale from Charles Dickens and to be swept away from the outside world. Instead I got what I've already noted plus a Scrooge who went in and out of character, in and out of voices...from a "Scrooge" type voice to sounding like some extreme southern idiot to voices that I suppose the actor just thought would be fun to do (Christopher Walken, etc.). And does Raleigh really not have better actors than this play displayed? Or a better director to make the decision that either everyone have an English accent or use their regular voice? Half of the actors just used their regular American voice while half attempted an English accent, going in and out of it. And Bob Marley...that was an Irish accent. He was like a blue leprechaun wandering all over the stage. I really paid $80 for this? If I could get a refund I would! I would never recommend this and I will absolutely not be going back. I believe this play is a disgrace to Charles Dickens' work...it's not a comedic story...and even if upon going into this play I had known it was going to be a comedy...it STILL would have disappointed me. The jokes were simple, not well thought out and an attempt at an easy laugh. I felt dumber as a result of having seen this.

  • Great Show!

It was fun and entertaining, I laughed and I cried. It got me thinking about what Christmas is really about, not just how much time I get off of work and what I have to buy people. I recommend it to everyone!

This play was fantastic. It was hilarious all the way through and I would recommend to anyone to see this. IDW IV did an amazing job as the Scrooge. Their ability to incorporate current events into their comedy was amazing.

  • a Christmas Carol - holiday tradition!

by RMH13 on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have made this production a Christmas tradition! This year was our third year going and it was just as much fun as the first time we went. Every year there are slight changes to the play to bring in big current events that happened over the past year so there is always something new. I think it's a great production for all ages and it really puts you in the Christmas spirit. You can go dressed in jeans or evening gowns and it's just a fun night out. I definitely recommend going to see a fun twist on the classic a Christmas Carol story.

  • Fantastic! Not to miss!

A not to miss event of the season for adults and children. The present day humor keeps everyone laughing and feel connected to the story. Great cast: young and old! The impressive effort by all is evident in the seamless production.

  • Christmas Carol... another amazing year

by Khbell on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Ira David Wood IV picked up right in his father's footsteps and did a fantastic job! Some things he did exactly like his dad and some things he tweaked just a bit to make his own... My wife and I hadn't been able to go for the last 3 or 4 years, and it was a terrific show to come back to. We'll be coming back again for years to come, hoping Ira David Wood the III and IV enable this show to continue to be a Raleigh Christmas tradition for years and years!

  • Not good --

by thefredman on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

This was like a church camp - high school production - I was very disapointed. The music was outdated - and the songs were too long. It's about time to put this production to bed. Raleigh would benefit from a traditional production -- this was like a cheap musical.

  • A Cristmas Carol was fabulous

by Nthuzasm on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I didn't know what to expect when we sat down. I was astonished at the professionalism of the troop and the fast pace of the play. I am somewhat hard of hearing so I was pleased when the volume of the sound was sufficient for me not to strain. I have never seen the play before so the change of leading man was transparent to me. He looked like he had been doing it for years.

  • A Christmas Carol was Fantastic!!

by Ceara on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

My family and I had not been to see A Christmas Carol in years. We decided to revisit this family tradition this year, as part of our Christmas. It was fantastic. Ira David Wood IV did a superb job as Scrooge. A Christmas Carol offers something for everyone. I highly recommend it to everyone!

  • A Holiday tradition

by CarolinaMan on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

David Ira IV did a great job in the roll of Scrooge, and having to stand in for his father this is no easy feat, yet he did it flawlessly. This was the first year I brought my daughter to the play and she absolutely loved it. This will be a daddy and daughter Holiday tradition.

  • The holiday is complete

by PAyscue on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Having attended virtually every year, I will admit my disappointment that Ira David Wood would not be performing for the first time in 36 years. We purchased our tickets before the announcement. Let me publicly apologize as Ira Jr. was more than adequate replacement and the exemplary performance assures us (should he wish to continue) our holiday classic is in very good hands. And it was great to see Dad make a cameo and know his recovery is going well. The cast and crew did another wonderful job. The sets were magnificent and the topical injections to the script will keep you laughing. The perfect mix of comedy and poignant reflection of what this holiday should be. Job well done!

  • The Christmas Carol was excellent!

by JBW718 on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

This play is wonderful and I will plan to see it again next year. We were disappointed that the part of Scrooge was being played by the son but I cannot imagine how the father could be any better in the part. He was remarkable in the part. Loved the humor.

  • A Christmas Carol - Great!

by Fields55 on 12/13/10Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

After attending A Christmas Carol since 1979, we were anxious and excited to see Ira David Wood IV perform as Scrooge. We were not disappointed. He stepped into the role like a pro. I'm sure his father is very proud. Again, the overall performance set our Christmas season in motion. This year we added our 18 month old grandson to those attending and he sat mesmorized the entire show. What a wonderful family tradition this show provides for our family. Mitchell did a fantastic job as Young Scrooge. The orchestra provides top knotch performances.
