  • A Christmas Carol never disappoints!

by Christmasgal on 12/13/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the show. We have made it a Christmas tradition for the past 20 years. Great way to celebrate my husband' s birthday as well.

From beginning to end, the level of entertainment was outstanding. The show was funny, touching, sweet and well done!!! This is the second year I have attended, and will plan on next year and bring others to enjoy and start a yearly tradition as we plan to.

I've been going to see this production since about 1982 and I stil find it entertaining and funny. While Ira David Wood IV did a great job last year filling in for his father, it was good to see Ira David senior back on stage and in such fine form. Performances by other cast members were uniformly good. As usual, Jacob Marley and the Ghost of Christmas Present were highlights. Ira David Wood IV was also great as the Lamplighter. The show seemed to have been shortened a bit this year (not really a bad thing), perhaps by 10-15 minutes. Only 2 negative comments. Lose the Bozo - the -Clown look-alike as the Ghost of Christmas Future. Clowns, outside of a circus, always seem out of place, don't they? Temperature in the balcony was sauna-like on a very chilly night.

  • A Christmas Carol

by Lilymac on 12/13/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Our first time attending the Christmas Carol and it was a delightful afternoon. The entire production was good from beginning to end. This is a yearly treasure I'm sure and we will look forward to next year. The only negative was the loudness of the orchestra; so often we could not hear the songs or the dialog . The parking was easy and handled very well. Especially thank you for transportation from the parking lot to the entrance. Thank you for a wonderful event that will become a tradition for us.

  • great show

by 1gsa on 12/13/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent show! Very entertaining! Loved the orchestra and singing! I laughed and cried! The use of recent events to add comedy to the show was very well done! I sat in the balcony, in the middle, along the back (not the sides). This was too far to adequately see facial expressions. I would recommend sitting no further than the mezzanine section or side balconies. Expensive for a family, but very good. Not worth it for kids younger than middle school age.

  • Funny and Charming

Theatre In the Park: a Christmas Carol was both charming and full of quip. Definitely entertaining and appropriate for any age.

My wife and I have attended this performance many times over the years. We found this performance to the the best that we have seen. Ira David Wood III was at his best. He was energetic, showed his usual sense of humor and his timing was perfect. We always enjoy the references to the local NC rivalries. Overall a wonderful experience.

  • Must See!

by Shellrocks81 on 12/13/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Loaded with Pop Culture references but very true to the original story. Ira David Wood III and his son are awesome together. Loved the parts where his son runs on stage to check on him due to last years heart attach. If you don't know Ira David Wood III's back story some of the reference made are missed and I had to tell my guests when they didn't get the joke. Loved this play and will make it a holiday tradition.

  • Wonderful!

by 2Koi4u on 12/12/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen this same show probably 5 times, though it has been too long since the last time. The singing and acting was superb, the little girl who played the Ghost of Christmas Past was so young but extremely talented. Scrooge (David Ira Wood) has incredible talent and it was a joy to see him back in the role after his heart surgery. This show will evoke laughter and tears...it is truly original...you should definitely go see it!

by CNURSE on 12/12/11Progress Energy Center - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 15 yr old daughter and my parents. We all enjoyed it. The children in the cast were great. Ira David Wood did an outstanding job. Very intertaining. The way he added current jokes in with the original story was hilarious. Thanks for a very entertaining show. My family wants to make it a Christmas tradition now. I agree!!!!!

  • Expecting too much?

by St3lla on 12/12/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

I used to go to see "A Christmas Carol" every year growing up. I hadn't been in at least ten years, so I wanted to take my kids so that they could experience it as well. I wasn't exactly disappointed in the play, however I will say that I remember this to be a more powerful experience. What used to be a great musical with some corny jokes thrown in seems to now be a corny play with some musical thrown in. Some of the casting was questionable as well - for example, the Ghost of Christmas Past was very impressive for her age, but was very young and often hard to understand. The play was enjoyable, but I couldn't help but feel a bit let down - particularly at the out-the-door price of $80/ticket for our Mezzanine seats. Still, we bought the CD and the wonderful music will no doubt become part of our holiday collection. It pains me to say it, but this was just an average play. I'd recommend it to a friend, but only with the warning that they should be expecting a lot of slapstick humor and jokes that will go over the head of many children. Or I'd recommend that they save $60 and just buy the CD for $20!

  • Last year's was better

by ChirstmasCarol on 12/12/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

I have been to this show twice now. Once last year when Ira David Woods III was in the hospital and his son took up his role as Scrooge. Then again this year as Ira David Wood III returned. I have enjoyed watching the play both times, but I have to say that I think that Ira David Woods IV (the son) did a much better job in the role as Scrooge. He was funnier, had better timing, and seemed to have just an overall better stage presence.

  • Best Christmas play around!!!

by kbmitchell on 12/12/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

We have enjoyed this play several times over the years and LOVE it each and every time. It's never completely the same, which makes it so enjoyable each time. This year was especially good because Scrooge was back in his place!! We are so thankful that Mr. Wood has recovered so well and that he is back to making us laugh and cry all at the same time!! Personally, I had a cancer scare last year and was about to start chemo this time last year, so I'm very thankful that I too, am doing great and could be at the performance this year!

  • Theatre in the Park's A Christmas Carol

by LittleDebbie57 on 12/12/11Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely, Positively the best play I have ever seen!!! This was a holiday tradition when I lived in Raleigh & return as often as I can from Concord, NC to see this production. LOVE taking others for their first time & sharing their delight in seeing this for the first time. Only wish TIP could perform this play in Charlotte, NC so I could introduce more friends to A Christmas Carol - in Ira David Woods III's way. Thanks once again for "putting a little Christmas in my heart"!! Merry Christmas to all of you AND "GOD BLESS YOU EVERYONE"!
