by Heelme on 12/11/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

Great rendition.....have seen it at least 4-5 times over the past 20 years.....a few of the jokes are a little old, but they try to keep it fresh with some new ones too.....the PSY dance was GREAT!.......keep it going, because the tradition is special!

  • Christmas Carol a Must See

by Charlie239 on 12/11/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Every year you see this play you think that it could not get better and then you go back and see it again and learn that it can. I continue to be amazed how each year many things remain the same while it is always updated. There is nothing there that was not 100% enjoyment. The play always plays with my emotions continually, going from laughing like crazy to tears in the next moment. It really is not Christmas until you see this!

As always this is just a great way to start my Christmas! With this world sliding into despair, it sure is nice to have some old school Christian entertainment.

  • Theatre in the Park's "A Christmas Carol"

by byrdpack4 on 12/11/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Absolutely amazing as always! We have attended every few years for the past 25 years and the past 17 years with our children and they love it too! We always look forward to it as part of our family Christmas celebration!

  • Great show, great heart, well done again!

by Dreamreal on 12/11/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

This was our third year of going to the play as a family; as always, the show was well done, funny, heartfelt, and alive. It didn't feel like it was just a day job for any of the actors - all did very well, from the old standbys like Mr. Wood, to the young ones such as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Wonderful performance, and looking forward to going to next year's performance as well - and some other plays from Theater in the Park.

  • Good.but

by JBR66 on 12/11/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

As always, it was a funny and well-produced version of the story. I would only say that the lullaby to his son at the end pf the program was a bit too self-indulgent and really didn't add to the play itself. It may be some tradition in the family, but it was unnecessary.

  • HORRBILE Show

by DisappointedInWilmy on 12/10/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

A complete and total abomination of A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens would roll over in his grave. The humor was forced, contrived, and even completely stolen (Airplane's "don't call me Shirley" used more than once). We knew going in that it was going to be not only a musical adaptation, but also a comedic one. Which would have been fine, if the comedy hadn't been toilet humor (fake barfing multiple times by Scrooge, for example), or had been funny whatsoever. Also - we had 2nd row balcony seats in the middle, and could hardly understand most of what was being said/sung. I attended with my mother and a friend, and we were all appalled. We literally spent the rest of the day trying to figure out how in the world this production has been done for 38 years. We lasted 30 minutes, and couldn't stand it any longer, so we left. Although I was angry because we each spent $50 to see the show, my friend said that she would've been willing to pay another $50 to leave! Those that produce and put on this show should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Spectacular as always!

I love Ira David Wood, III!!! I had never liked "The Christmas Carol" until I saw his version! Now it is an annual event for us. The talent is unbelievable!!! The children are professional and adorable!

Always an amazing show! A Christmas tradition for our family!

  • A Christmas Carol

We enjoyed the show, especially the music, but we had a hard time hearing some of the dialogue.

  • A Christmas Carol with bad sound quality!!!!

by Bleugirl on 12/10/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 2 out of 5

I know this wasn't the actors fault, but the sound quality was horrible. I wanted this show to be a memorable family event! We could not hear half of what the actors were saying. The singing was great because it was louder, but the talking was not loud enough for us to make out what they were saying, in fact, my 16 year old fell asleep because he could not hear the show. Very disappointing!

The musical was so awful my fiancé and I left during intermission. What a waste of $80! Referencing the song Call Me Maybe and having an erection are not two things I connect to "A Christmas Carol." We were vey disappointed.

I have seen this play many times. This year was one of the best ones yet. Ira David Wood III never disappoints me. He, his son, and the rest of the cast are all fantastic.

  • Another great performance!

The Theater in the Park's Christmas Carol was wonderful, as always. Christmas would not be the same without attending this great show every year!

  • by falalalalah on 12/10/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Not only recommended this play to friends, we invited them to spend the night so they didn't have to travel back to New Bern after it was over. Great to hear "first timers" laugh and cry over this awesome adaptation of a classic.

  • Good but too many jokes

by lostsailor73 on 12/10/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 3 out of 5

The production was good but there were too many jokes for my taste. I would have preferred the classic story without all the nonsense, which took away from the musical.

I've seen A Christmas Carol many times in my life. Last year, we saw it at Barter Theater in Abingdon, VA. Not knowing what to expect when I purchased these tickets for myself, my 13 year old son and my 11 year old daughter, I thought it would be a good "comparison" from Barter for my kids to see differing theater companies and ideas. (we see a lot of shows at Barter and my daughter has attended some classes there). THERE IS NO COMPARISION. Barter was the traditional A Christmas Carol and VERY well done. But, Theater in the Park's rendition was upbeat and amazing. Full of laughs and one-liners, yet still getting the message of the story across, we will be making this a Christmas Tradition. When a 13 year old sports-minded boy says he can't wait to come back next year, I believe the task has been won. Both myself and my children have laughed out loud/to ourselves since seeing the play, and have to report to each other what we are giggling about. Congratulations on a production well done and thank you for providing my children and I something we will look forward to every year.

  • Absoutely astounding performance!

by MinNC on 12/10/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I had always wanted to see A Christmas Carol, and it was a spur of the moment decision to get tickets, but I'm so glad I did! I was truly impressed by the performers and the talent displayed by all. It was very obvious that many hours of preparation and rehearsal time was spent to deliver the highest quality and most entertaining performance that I have seen in a LONG time. And, I must say that Ira David Woods III was definitely the STAR of the show. He is a very talented man, and the show would not be the same without his involvement from every aspect. Great job everyone!

  • Its officially Christmas

by PAyscue on 12/10/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Our yearly excursion did not disappoint. Despite an incredibly annoying patron behind us who felt the need to repeat EVERY joke, Mr. Wood was his usual magnificent self, with the cast of pros we look forward to. Topical and timely, the seasoned cast shows why this is the best show of the year, each and every year.
