  • Not what I was expecting

by AshleyKatie on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

While some parts were cute and humorous the overall show was below expectations. I was hoping for a more traditional version of a Christmas Carol. I felt as though the story line drifted from the theme multiple times throughout the show. There was even a magic trick using an audience memeber randomly done in the middle of a scene which didn't pertain to the show at all.

We loved "A Christmas Carol". This is about the time we have seen this play, and it was great. There is always something different each time that we have seen the play, which is what keeps us coming back. The whole cast was wonderful, but the little girl that played "Christmas Past" was amazing!! We will defiantly go to see it again!!!!

  • A Triangle Treasure

by PJoe on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This is an annual event that everyone that lives in the North Carolina Research Triangle area needs to see at least once. A great comedy spin on the Dicken's novel incorporating a lot of local humor and current references. Everyone leaves with a smile on their face!

  • a Christmas Carol - fun for the whole family

by hurricanesfan on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

My husband, 11 year old son, and 13 year old daughter and I all loved the performance. There were some jokes that our kids did not get, but there was plenty for them to enjoy. My son said it was the best show he has ever seen, and asked "Can we go again next year?".

  • A Christmas Carol was heartwarming!

What a wonderful afternoon. A great way to get into the Christmas spirit

  • This show was the 2nd worst I've seen in my life.

by RJSDuke on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5

Horrible. No other way to describe it. Particularly the guy who played Scrooge. This WAS NOT a "Christmas Carol" play or musical. It was a lame "comedic adaption" that was unfunny and annoying, mostly because of the narcissism of the director/writer, who also starred as the main character, Ebeneezer Scrooge. I felt conned and would like my money back. DO NOT ATTEND. Seeing "The Nutcracker" is a much better way to spend your money. I would have been better off just burning the money I spent on the play, because that way I wouldn't have wasted time going to it.

  • A Christmas Carol

by Oxthorne on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

Great performance! Sound guys need to make sure the children's mic levels are not outrageously louder than everyone else and the drummer needs to back off and play tastefully in certain spots, but overall a grand production. Kudos to all the cast and crew!

The production was smart, current, humurous, and full of Christmas spirit! The house was full and full of expectations, and nobody left unfullfilled!

  • Big disappointment...

by AlmostDurhamnative on 12/15/12DPAC - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5

Took the family to see this for the first time. We are big Dickens fans and thought this would be a nice treat for the kids an us. Wow, what a disappointment. It was a very loose adaptation of the classic story and at times, just disgusting. Most of the singing talent was just okay. Cute kids but mostly overplayed their roles and really were not that good - again, singing just okay. They missed their mark. If you are looking for traditional fare, don't waste your money, you will leave underwhelmed. This could have been so much more. We could have spent our $270 elsewhere and had a much more enjoyable time. Sound quality was good. Props good. Costumes good. Not going again however...

  • Dont expect tooo much

by DPACLOVER on 12/15/12Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

Well, Just got home from seeing "Christmas Carol", and too be honest....I can't really say that I loved it. Maybe, because, I am so used to shelling out money to see the touring Broadway shows, that my expectations are somewhat biased and high standard. Honestly, I can not see how "critically acclaimed" this show was on touring the UK/France, and the review that said this show could be a hit on the "West-End".......is wrong. This show has some tweeking that needs to be done, for it to be in that category. So, when all is said and done...what do we have? We have a local production, of a well-known classic. I can definitely understand the idea to incorporate modern innuendos, slang and some farce, to make the show more marketable and approachable to many different age groups. This is where the show misses the mark....it's trying to be too many things at one time. Many of the jokes seemed to be force-fed, and there were a few times, that could be described as "cringe-worthy". The songs are weak, and the second act, seemed to fly by..whereas the first act seemed to drag on. More effort should be taken by the production designers to , enhance the second act; especially the scenes with the 3 ghosts. The lamplighter/narrator, was honestly the best actor in the company, All in all, it was okay...but, I doubt I will go again.

  • A Christmas Carol with a twist............

by jman360365 on 12/14/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

What an event! Was pleasantly surprised at the wit and life that this production breathed into a "timeless classic". We loved the inclusion of current events into the theme; it provided a connection to the now that made us laugh and cry and "feel' the show. Bravo!

  • A Christmas Carol was amazing, as always!

by AllieCat3 on 12/14/12Progress Energy Center Raleigh Memorial Auditorium - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

As it is every year, A Christmas Carol was classic, poignant, festive, hilarious and heartwarming. Ira David Wood III is at his best, better than ever, funny and pulling at your heartstrings. There is no other place to be this time of year than at this show! Highly recommend!

  • A Christmas Carol never disappoints!

I enjoyed the production again this year as I do every year! Ira David Wood, III does an outstanding job with the cast and the play. I love how he includes current events and headlines in the play. It just makes it all the better. I had balcony seats this year and the view was great. Enjoyed everything.

The production "A Christmas Carol - The Musical" at the Raleigh Memorial Theater on December 13, 2012, was amazing. Such a delightful evening of musical comedy with professional level sets, costumes, acting, music, story lines, comedic one liners, local and national humor, and entertainment. I highly recommend this production !! Thanks to all the cast and crew members who gave an outstanding performance in every way !!
