I'm not a Scrooge - or a Yankee!
by DurhamBro on 12/18/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5Sorry to be a Grinch, and I know I'm going to offend some locals, but I just need to give a fair warning to people who have no idea what this show is. It is a comedy, first of all, and a very broad one at that. There are more pop culture references than you can shake a binder full of women at. It is campy, to say the least. I was thinking of Mama's family meets Looney Toons the whole time. So if you're expecting a maudlin or earnest adaptation of the Dickens classic, you will be sorely, sorely disappointed. That said, I'm glad I went. It definitely felt like a local tradition, and the more of those I can be a part of, perhaps the more I can enjoy them. The production value was very high, and the performance of Scrooge was something to behold. A Christmas Carol is such a powerful story, that even the silliest version can't belie its underlying themes. And so I'll enjoy any version of it I see. Just some less than others.
