  • I'm not a Scrooge - or a Yankee!

by DurhamBro on 12/18/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

Sorry to be a Grinch, and I know I'm going to offend some locals, but I just need to give a fair warning to people who have no idea what this show is. It is a comedy, first of all, and a very broad one at that. There are more pop culture references than you can shake a binder full of women at. It is campy, to say the least. I was thinking of Mama's family meets Looney Toons the whole time. So if you're expecting a maudlin or earnest adaptation of the Dickens classic, you will be sorely, sorely disappointed. That said, I'm glad I went. It definitely felt like a local tradition, and the more of those I can be a part of, perhaps the more I can enjoy them. The production value was very high, and the performance of Scrooge was something to behold. A Christmas Carol is such a powerful story, that even the silliest version can't belie its underlying themes. And so I'll enjoy any version of it I see. Just some less than others.

  • The best, hands down!

by Magnitude on 12/18/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This, without a doubt, is consistently the best adaptation of this story out there. While the basic storyline remains unchanged, the modern, local, and always hysterical references keep it fresh. Although some of the humor flew right over the heads of my boys (ages 10 and 13), they still thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Ira David Wood III is one talented individual!

This is the first play we have ever attended and we are going to make it an annual tradition. I would highly recommend this amazing show

  • "Hit the Spot!"

by sandidi on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed A Christmas Carol on Saturday, December 15. So well done that the "still shots" in the opening and ending scenes were absolutely picturesque and stunningly motionless! The program was beautifully attired, the humor contemporary and clean (and oh, so funny), and the real meaning of Christmas very thoughtfully done. The show certainly "hit the spot" in our particular weary hearts. Thanks to every individual who contributed anything in the production!

  • Long, but Entertaining

by DSH1 on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent rendition of a classic. The insertion of modern events and humor made the play even more enjoyable. It does drag in places and is about 30 minutes too long, but worth sitting through for the whole family.

We took our 2 teenage grandsons and what a treat! They thoroughly enjoyed it and understood many of the humorous lines. This was our first time attending and really didn't know what to expect. We will be back next year and the year after. FANTASTIC!!

  • Wonderful adaptation of A Christmas Carol

by malicej on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

We did not know what to expect as we had not read reviews of this play. When I read that it was a musical comedy, my heart sank. When I heard my husband's first laugh, I knew we were in for an afternoon of enjoymant. This adaptation is a must see.

  • a Christmas Carol is a hit; year after year after

by Anonymous on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Ira David Woods III delivers a wonderful performance of Ebinezer Scrooge in a modern day at our politically correct society. Personally, I cried through the entire performance; tears of laughter , joy, and remembrance of years gone bye. This is a must see every year and best seen with friends and family. .

  • Not what I expected

by ped3 on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

Although this play was rather enjoyable (funny), I was expecting a little more adherence to the original script. It was a parody pretty much, and I was not ready for the modern-day add-ons and interpretation. It reminded me of a movie that used comedy of this nature a few years ago entitle, "A Knight's Tale." Overall it was enjoyable, just not what I had envisioned.

by Nikanddan on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I have been hearing good things about this show since I moved to Raleigh in 1998. Until this year, I never found the time to go. I am SO glad that I went this year. It was even more hilarious and heart-warming than I expected it to be. It might even become a traditional annual holiday festivity in my family!

  • AMAZING - AGAIN!!

by McTammy on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This is my 4th time to see David's Christmas Carol - but the first time I brought my daughters and niece. They absolutely loved it!!!!! I cannot recommend this show highly enough. It's now a part of our holiday tradition!!

  • A Christmas Carol was excellent!

by TarHeel7 on 12/17/12DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Great music, choreography, and dialogue. Amazing that Ira David Wood III keeps it fresh every year w/ current political commentary/humor as well as cultural currency e.g., a Gangnan dance. I could do w/out the really slapstick bonks but they were a minor detraction and I'm sure the children loved them. Difficult to see the day after Sandy Hook but IDW was sensitive to that during the show and an encore with the audience singing a Christmas carol with the cast brought us all together at the close. It was a lovely afternoon to start the holiday on a special note.

  • Christmas Carol is hilarious!

Ira David Wood III always updates the humor with current events. I especially enjoyed his talk with the stool.
