  • Not for us!!!

by Laurie on 12/19/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

Let me say there are some talented singers and actors in this production, but it wasn’t for us. It was silly, gratuitous and irreverent in a not-so-good way. In the few moments where the actors stopped entertaining themselves and played their roles, it could be quite moving. They could have given us a wonderful interpretation of the story, added in a little humor and we would have loved it. It just went way too far. We were very disappointed. I don’t see how this has been successful for so many years. Perhaps the actors were more engrossed in themselves this year since it was a final season for the lead, but it seemed like a giant attaboy to themselves from start to finish and we just didn’t enjoy it. We felt as if we’d been left out of a private joke all night. Perhaps a couple of performances they could done all that and had some for the rest of us who don’t know all the history. Ugh. I hate to leave this review but…it’s honest.

  • Awesome experience

by Kathi on 12/19/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

This is the second year my husband and I have seen A Christmas Carol and it was amazing both times! And DPAC has a great streamlined process making it easy and painless to park and get in the theater.

  • It was fantastic!

by Sandra on 12/19/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Loved every minute of it. It was great to see one of Ira David Wood III's final performances. Very memorable. We took our daughter and granddaughters. One for the memory books! Loved Amelia in the bit with the dollar.

  • Amoung the best if not the best.

by Marty Bridges on 12/19/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I have been taking my family to this play since 1983. This is among the best if not the best production I have seen. The upgrades of the set over the years have added greatly to the production. The script changes to keep it contemporary Have mostly worked. Ira Woods III will be missed on the stage, but i am sure he will keep his finger in the rest of it.

  • Incredible

  • Christmas Carol - low on jokes

by HearingAidLady on 12/19/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

In years past the political humor was far edgier and far more frequent. They played it very very safe this year, which is kind of sad, considering it will be the last. But the music was lovely.

  • Stellar Performance

by Stacie G. on 12/19/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

The performance was amazing and the staff were friendly and caring of people with disabilities. My mom went with us to see the show and could not walk up/down steps and I didn’t realize there was steps to get to our seats. The usher allowed my mom to sit in a sit that was near the door, and aisle seat and not stairs. Top notch in my book.

  • A Magical Memory

by Susan on 12/18/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

I saw A Christmas Carol for the very first time 50 years ago and it has always been a beautiful family tradition! It was especially touching when I saw it this final year with Ira David Wood III. Thank you for all the Magical Memories for 50 beautiful years! BRAVO!!

  • Greatest show on earth!

  • Christmas funny

by Ricky on 12/17/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Funny but also had beautiful meaningful scenes as well

  • Over the top

by Tp on 12/17/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

Talent, sets, costumes were amazing. Lovely experience at DPAC. I was disappointed with the over the top “humor” that was almost almost crude for a family event. Just too much Very disappointed that there were no bios on the local talent- not even the leads had more than a name listed. It’s really not just about the directors - a disservice to the other 74 cast members.

  • An enjoyable evening

by Big Fan on 12/17/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

For 38 years I've been enjoying Ira David Wood's adaptation of A Christmas Carol. I had to go one last time to see him as E. Scrooge. I look forward to Ira's rendition as he assumes the full time role of that greedy old elf, Ebenezer Scrooge. Break a leg!

  • Phenomenal

by JQ on 12/17/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it! My 10 year old son said it was better than the Disney version starring Jim Carrey! He found it funny and laughed tons when Scrooge and Jacob Marley were laughing and had the audience laughing too. Everyone should make this a tradition!

  • Outstanding!

by Cachto on 12/16/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

A Christmas Carol was an amazing experience at DPAC!!!! The sound, even for the children acting, was stellar. We could hear every word. The performance itself was amazing. I'm so grateful for a show that is tasteful for all ages and yet funny and top quality! Ira David Wood IV was incredible!!! This will be another 50 year tradition for the triangle!!!

  • Always Entertaining

by kwildcat78 on 12/16/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Ira David Wood IV makes an excellent Scrooge, but I was really hoping to see his dad this time since it will be his last. Had I known he would not be in this particular night of the play, I would've opted to buy tickets on a different evening. Of course, they marketed a Christmas Carol this year as his last, so it was disappointing that I missed him in the performance.

  • Amazing

  • Good but...

by RM on 12/16/23DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

Excited to see again but play seemed to lack in story and lot more puns, and not as fun as in prior years.

  • Festive Welcome to Christmas

It was a great show. The only disappointment was that Ira David Wood III did not play Scrooge or make an appearance. We were not aware that he would not be performing in this show.
