Durham ... Raleigh ... doesn't matter ... this is show is always AWESOME!!!! Ira David Wood III and crew never disappoint!!! If you've never been ... go!!!!
This is a must see for any theater fans in the Triangle area. IDW is the epitome of Scrooge and has nailed this role year after year. Our family tradition has grown to become one of my most favorite things to look forward to at the holiday season.
Was fine. I thought the humor aspect was over-done some - particularly when the traditional stuff is done so well. BIG BEEF: The erectile dysfunction part is ***** COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE ***** for the audience which has a lot of kids. He has done this bit for 3-4 years know. If you are sensitive to this as a parent (and there is other adult humor) .... DON"T GO.
Very entertaining version of a classic story. Haven't laughed this how in a long time.
Heartwarming and humurous, a unique adaptation of the timeless Dickens classic.
Based on this year's play, I wouldn't recommend going next year. I've been several previous years where the ad-lib was funny and relevant, but this year the jokes were corny and the least witty I've heard yet. I enjoyed it so much in years past that I talked my spouse into going this year and it wasn't worth it. Rather disappointing.
Found that I am more of a traditionalist. Did not really enjoy the farce the performance made of things and then how it came back in the end and wanted to be moving and meaningful.
Definitely not what we expected. Seems we are in the minority on this but we felt there were too many one-liners, juvenile jokes, and political statements. This did not get us into the Holiday spirit. I don't mind comedy, but this wasn't funny. We left early.
Running for 39 years but always fresh and interesting! A holiday must see!
Enjoyed the show very much. Already planning on going again in 2014!
Great entertainment for the whole family to kick off the Christmas holidays!
The Ira Wood adaptation of a Christmas Carol proved to be entertaining but if you are looking for a production that is somewhat close to the original - then you might want to consider another production. The first act seemed a bit long and had little connected to the Dickens story. It could have been shorten and filled with more dialogue that would have been more connected to the real story. As a result you really had to be up on current events in NC to get the punch line on some of the comedy. Dickens purist probably won't enjoy this. But ..Overall an entertaining afternoon.
This was such a refreshing remake of A Christmas Carol. Although it had period costumes it was humorous with updated music. The jokes and satire were current especially for NC. One individual stated she has seen several performances because he is always changing the play.
Amazing!!!! Great show once again. We have not seen the show in a few years, now will make sure we will back each year. Loved it!!!
Something to put into your tickle file for 2014!! We were in search of some activity in which the Christmas Spirit would swell within us in a measure, and stumbled across the Durham Performing Arts Center offering of (Theater in the Park’s...) “A Christmas Carol.” We arrived at our matinee performance, anticipating a ponderous musical portrayal of the oft told tale, with stage effects and elaborate costuming and orchestration. We got elaborate costuming and orchestration and stage effects, all right; but we were still blown away! What we did not anticipate (ignorant as we are of this, our adopted home) was the COMEDY!! Yes, this was the 39th year that Ira David Wood III has portrayed Scrooge in a version of “A Christmas Carol” he wrote back when he was a young UNC theater arts graduate. He wanted it to be fun, and exultant, yet still faithful to the theme of the original story. In that he succeeded masterfully. Music and lyrics as well as the script all came from his genius. With wise-cracking humor, and insertion of current, topical side jokes (such as the duck commander appearing as the ghost of Christmas future), we were able to see the transformation of Ebenezer ever so effectively, but in a side-splitting way that we celebrated his conversion with him instead of engaging in a judgmental study of the character. The most impudent portrayal of a miserly curmudgeon with charm and wit to spare, someone with whom we rejoiced at show’s conclusion, as he joined all - audience, cast, musicians and crew - in remembrance of the joy of the season. A most pleasant surprise that we will likely be doing again in a future year…..
awesome preformance. would definatly go again, many time over.
A Christmas Carol meets the Three Stooges. I bought the tickets because the posters made this play look like a traditional telling. Boy do I wish I had that money back. Lame, unfunny, dated jokes. Totally out of place in a timeless tale. I see lots of plays, I didn't miss the point, it was just bad. Left at intermission. When a minion from Despicable Me ran across the stage and my kids didn't even laugh, I knew we'd all had enough. Didn't even see the ghosts by intermission! I could go on but I'd rather just forget about the money spent on this one.
Christmas is just not Christmas without Ira David Wood III's Scrooge! An afternoon of laughter and music to delight everyone - even the most humbugged among us. A N.C. tradition that I hope to bring generations of my own family to.
If I wanted Larry The Cable Guy's interpretation of a Dickens classic; I'd...well, I don't... Musical numbers were nice. The schtick in between is tired and lame. It's perfect source material for the next Wayans brother's schlock. Escaped at intermission.
