  • A Christmas Carol: Disgraceful

by Kingsmom on 12/15/14Progress Energy Performing Arts Center - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

I found this abomination of a beloved classic to be nothing more than low class humor. I left in the first 30 minutes. Wishing there was a "satisfaction guaranteed" clause because I would love to have my money back. In the end, my time was more important than the money.

  • Amazing!! Expected nothing less!!

by I675 on 12/15/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

My favorite play of all time. I've seen Mr. Wood several times over the past 20 years perform in this role and he NEVER disappoints. Funny, funny funny. Truly a must see for everyone.

  • A Christmas Carol: Gone Wrong!

by ConcernedTeacher on 12/15/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

This version of Charles Dickens original "A Christmas Carol" adapted by David Ira Woods III was down right raunchy and had nothing to do with the original story line. I would not recommend this play to anyone ever if they wanted to see a decent play. It was a sorry excuse for musical theatre for any type of family fun! Although my fiance and I left during intermission just holding on to a glimmer of hope for this play, some friends that had gone as well were even more disappointed that they had committed to stay. If the show is not going to follow along the story line of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" and have so many different segways into modern day events, then it should be advertised as a "parody" of some sort. Again, my fiance and I were sorely disappointed, but did have an unforgettable laugh at how bad it was after intermission! It rated less than 1 star (poor) in my book!

  • A Family Tradition never disappoints

Ira David Wood is heart warming and our family Christmas would not be the same without going, heart warming, and I always laugh until my sides hurt!

  • Everyone must see it once!

I have been to Ira David Wood's version of the Christmas Carol at least 10 times through its 40-year run! It is always different, whether it is different actors bringing their own version of the beloved characters they play, or the timely and wonderful comedy Mr. Wood infuses the play with each year! I know he can't play Scrooge forever, but I'll keep going as long as he is able to bring it to us!

  • A Christmas Carol is Great!

As always, talented and creative David Wood gave us a fresh take on the timeless story. Love it every year because it's so professionally done and never like before! Thank you for giving us this gift each year!

  • As always, great!

A great rendition of a great story. Some audio issues with orchestra too loud and performers sometimes hard too hear, but still a great experience. Maybe sound is better at DPAC performance??

  • A CHRISTMAS CAROL

by MARYKH on 12/14/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS HOLIDAY TRADITION IN RALEIGH, NC. WITH THE SIDE COMMENTS ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS, THE PLAY NEVER GETS OLD.

  • Amazing opening night!

by Teresa27577 on 12/13/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

This is a family favorite that changes every year. You need better advertising as everyone I tell about it is surprised to learn that it is a musical COMEDY. The unique current events insertions leave you in stitches and the show is never the same year after year.

  • Terrible writing; good actors

by atrueconch on 12/13/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - RaleighRating: 1 out of 5

My husband and I were excited to find a local production of A Christmas Carol. We bought tickets the day they went on sale. We both love the story and were looking forward to a great Christmas date night. We unfortunately did not realize that this show took the classic Dickens story and turned it into a musical comedy. (We should have done more research, yes, but nothing was said about this online when I found the tickets.) When the show started we quickly realized that this version was nothing like we hoped. There were terrible (both in taste and humor) jokes scattered throughout the show and the writer tried way too hard to make the show relevant and hip by adding in pop culture references. I kept hoping the show would improve and it just got worse. We left at intermission amazed by how terrible the show was. I do want to point out that this horrible review is based solely on the writing. The actors all did a great job and all of their hard work was evident.

  • A Christmas Carol is great!

Ira David Wood, III did his 40th show and it was entertaining! Live music, singing and dancing of the group is incredible. Costumes are perfect! Lots of laugh out loud moments!! We have gone every year since moving to the area 9 years ago and will go again next year!

  • Christmas Carol - Great

by Btadeac on 12/13/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

This is a great event. Ira David Wood is fantastic and the cast is great. Everyone on stage seems to be inspired to produce an unforgetable experience. This truly exemplifies the reason for the season. Recommended to all!!!

Always a treat to see this show! Loved the DPAC seating!

  • High hopes for this production.

Seats were good (orchestra row w) ... too bad about the people with their 3yo grandchild with them who thought that instead of just letting the kid watch, had to keep talking to him, asking him if he was Ok or if he wanted candy (kind of ruined it for us & our 12yo who kept looking back at them as they kicked her seat). Production was ... ok. We were told it was a classic with a twist and having been familiar with other pantomines from holidays past, we felt that this production lacked a certain ... magic. Main character seemed to be the only one who delivered the "zingers" while all other actors on stage got to stand back and watch. Most unnerving was that the same "zinger" was used over and over again. Felt "old" by the third time around. And the use of minions completely left us confused rather than delighted. I'm not sure if the main actor was ill during this run but this production seemed to drag on with the second half being even more discombobulated than the first. I think I'd see this again next year to see if perhaps it was just a bad night or perhaps this production has run it's course.

  • Tons of fun

by shellsd on 12/30/13DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Definitely not the standard Christmas Carol but full of humor and current events. I enjoyed it very much and my 9 year old begged me to bring him again next year as soon as it was over.
