About

The Cher Show is based on the life of Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere Bono Allman or as her friends call her, Cher! The kid on a tricycle, vowing to be famous. The teenage phenom who crashes by twenty. The glam TV star who quits at the top. The would-be actress with an Oscar. The rock goddess with a hundred million records sold. The legend who’s done it all, still scared to walk on stage. The wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend. The woman, looking for love. The ultimate survivor, chasing her dream. They’re all here, dressed to kill, singing their asses off, telling it like it is. And they’re all the star of The Cher Show.

Featuring her beloved chart-topping hits, The Cher Show will feature a book by Rick Elice (Tony Award-winning best musical Jersey Boys), direction by Jason Moore (Tony Award-winning best musical Avenue Q), choreography by Tony Award-winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies), and orchestrations, arrangements and musical supervision by Tony Award-winner Daryl Waters (Memphis).

    Cher Show

by Rudkin on 7/12/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

We had a great time at the Cher Show last Thursday. The music & story was very entertaining especially with the talented ladies playing Cher at different points in her career on stage at the same time. The story tells how she overcame obstacles in her personal & professional life to become a force in the entertainment industry that is truly amazing. He music, sets & costumes were great.

    better than expected

by KC513 on 7/12/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I thought the show was well done overall and presented Cher in a good light. The way the three Chers presented her life and thoughts was an innovative approach. The only thing I did not like about the show was the ending. It was lacking in excitement and seemed weak compared to the rest of the show. The ending could have been much better.

Funny, empowering, amazing vocals & costumes

by jenniferc21 on 7/12/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I was originally in it for Cher’s music, but this show greatly exceeded my expectations. Such a fantastic musical! Funnier than I expected and a beautiful story with spectacular performances by the cast. Amazing vocals - the crowd erupted in a roar of cheering with everyone blown away after Sonny began to sing. A runway of incredible Bob Mackie costume creations. Don’t miss this show!

    Great show!

by Vinton2018 on 7/11/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I like Cher for a long time. This is a very good show which showcased lots of Cher's famous songs. The only complain I have is that there are three different actress who plays different stage of Cher in her life. The setting can be confusion for us. Other than that, the songs and dance numbers were fabulous.

    There is only one Cher...

by ProductionGeek on 7/11/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Overall this show was very enjoyable! Stephanie J. Block was by far the strongest Cher in her mannerisms, voice, and likeness. She commanded the stage whenever present and consistently drew my eye away from Micaela Diamond and Teal Wicks. I highly enjoyed the through-line of Bob Mackie (Michael Berresse) who camped up his part and really brought that relationship to life. Jarrod Spector also gave a great presence to his role as Sonny Bono by fleshing out the best and worst of their time together. Emily Skinner as Georgia Holt was immediately recognizable to me the moment she stepped on stage and gave great impact in her supporting role. I was a little underwhelmed by the fact Act I focused almost completely on her relationship and rise to stardom under Sonny's guidance and Act II barely scratched the surface of her personal achievements and successes as a solo artist. I would love to see more of Cher post Sonny. The songs were all tweaked to fit the moments throughout her life, which was perfection in some places and a struggle in others. Many moments the three versions of Cher would interact and sing together.. this was an interesting concept, but confusing to follow at times. The lighting was phenomenal! They utilized their rig to give many effects from basic spotlight to full on dance numbers. The sound had some issues during our performance and there was a dull ringing that would go in and out. As a Cher fanboy my heartstrings were pulled watching powerful moments such as Cher's Oscar win, her breakup with Gregg Allman, and her delivering Sonny's eulogy. I'm grateful this production was brought to life and I look forward to seeing the final Broadway show!

A true-life story (that needs a minor polish)

by RayQ on 7/11/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

A truly talented cast very capably tells the true-life story of the one-and-only Cher, not only with powerful vocal chops, but also with gorgeous costume and lighting design. In this pre-Broadway run, the show was solid, but the book needs a tweak at the very end to seal the emotional deal of the whole show (otherwise the conclusion fell emotionally flat, or at least askew and abruptly).

Bob Mackie's costumes alone are worth the ticket!

by theatrefan3000 on 7/11/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The Cher Show was very entertaining, with great performances and bedazzling (and bedazzled) costumes by Bob Mackie. Cons: We saw the preview, so I expected it to be a work-in-progress. Some of the songs ended too early; I’d rather they’d been left out than just teased. The transitions from scene to scene were a little abrupt, and a faux television camera projected video during several scenes. There was a lot of time spent on the early days of Sonny and Cher. I wanted to see more devoted to later events. The relationships with Sonny and Gregg Allman were not that developed or emotional, in my opinion. Nothing here seemed deeply personal or revelatory, but that didn't bother me. Pros: I went for the entertainment and the play delivered with fun dance numbers and great songs. The three Cher actresses were outstanding. Stephanie Block and Micaela Diamond each had show-stopping performances in their Cher roles. The music was familiar, with a couple of new interpretations of songs. The dance numbers were a blend of the variety-show style from 1970s television and old-Hollywood Busby Berkeley productions. The costumes are a significant character in the show, with a few of them getting enthusiastic ovations from the audience. Michael Campayno's performance as Rob Camilletti was a stand-out for me. Campayno was one of the actors (along with Stephanie Block and Emily Skinner as Georgia Holt) who managed to convey warmth and emotion in an otherwise light treatment of her life. Summary: It was a very fun night at the theater, and I recommend it to anyone who loves Cher, her music or FANTASTIC costumes.

    CHER MUSICAL WAS SO ENTERTAINING

by JNC2 on 7/11/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

We saw the Cher Show TWICE and would go back again. The show was very entertaining with all the familiar music, clothes, dancers, and story line of Cher. The three woman who played Cher were amazing. The man who played Sonny....awesome. I hope that the play does well on Broadway too.

    Too many Chers

by RobbieStarr on 7/11/18Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Unexpected life story. Would rather have had more of a musical/variety show like the TV show was. None of the Chers had even any physical resemblance to Cher. One looked too much like Ana Gasteyer, one looked too much like Kathy Griffin. How is that believable? There are many Cher impersonators with physical resemblances and vocal chops to have done this type of show. Several Chers on stage at the same time was distracting. The opening was contrived and uninteresting. The orchestra was great; the supporting cast singing Cher songs was disturbing, and the Sonny role was played in too high a voice, but he's the only other one who should have been singing. The role of Cher's mother was excessive. If it's going to be a life story, why no mention of the regrettable infomercial, the first movie ("Chastity" for who the child was named), and barely a mention of Chaz and Elijah?

Loved this show! Brought back memories of my youth. The acting, singing, dancing and COSTUMES were fabulous! Very informative about Cher's life. THe audience loved it too! Everyone was swaying, clapping, and laughing at the subtle jokes. It's mix of music with the stages of Cher's life (both happy & sad) was incredible. I highly recommend it! .

Nostalgic and fun! The flow seemed a bit awkward at times; nothing that can't be worked out. The older Cher is clearly ”got it down”. All 3 have great voices. Wonder if each Cher could have a more definitive, unique attribute that would make those roles stand out more and make the forward/backwars reflection more critical to the storytelling. Also, love how some of the higher energy/up tempo pieces became ballads, feel it needs one less ballad and a bit more ”meter” shifts for contrast.
