Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

    Fantastic Amalie

    by R. S. on 2/11/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

I love Amalie Arena. The staff is friendly. Ushers, concession workers all helpful and happy to assist you. Great variety of food and drink. Lightning are an exciting team. Fun is the name of the game for fans. I am a boomer, so the overinvolved SCOREBOARD annoys me to no end. Too loud. Attempting to feature every fan in attendance on the scoreboard is bush league. I shall return!!

    Go see the Bolts!

    by A. on 2/9/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

What a game! This one was an edge-of-your-seat affair for sure. And you can’t compare watching on TV to being there - nothing is more fun for a Bolts fan than seeing them live at Amalie. There is not a bad seat in the house and Amalie is a top notch venue.

The tickets were easy to order and admittance was easy. The only negative being that the wrong team won.

I never was at a hockey game and even though pens lost it was awesome. They had a lot of fun things going on between periods. I will definitely go again.

    First experience

by aitch on 2/7/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

A great first ice hockey experience watching the Lightning. Good view from third level, knowledgeable & friendly seat neighbours, super atmosphere, fairing price. Shame about the hassle with my small backpack which doubles as my purse.

    Amalie....BOLTS

    by R. S. on 2/7/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

Everything is just first class and fan friendly. The Lightning are a class organization that makes the ticket purchaser feel welcomed and appreciated. The only drawback to an old school and just plain old hockey fan like me is the loud annoying scoreboard. Just a pain in the backside.

    Lightning vs Coyotes.

by Tom on 1/12/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

Fantastic experience! Venue was immaculate and the staff was courteous. Food and beverages were awesome! Mr Vinnick and the organization should be proud of the product they put on the ice, and the staff they have to support it. I will support their organization as I am able to.

    Hockey Life!!!

    by MadBuggyRV17 on 1/12/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

Parking was pricey but easy to find across the street, food at the SamWharf was amazing and very reasonable, Amalie Arena thunderzone is fantastic and the venue is outstanding. Not a bad seat in the house, we were 322 row M and loved the game. Lots of great concessions, a little something for everyone. Best venue we have ever been into in a long time!!!

    Smooth Process, Exciting Game

    by S. on 1/10/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

The ticket-buying was easy. I even needed to buy extra tickets and was able to get some in the row right in front of the original tickets. The entry process went smoothly, scanning the barcodes from my phone. The game was exciting because of the number of goals scored (9). This is the second game I've gone to this year and the second time the Lightning have scored 9 goals (I also went to the 9-3 victory over the Rangers on Nov. 14 ). Ticketmaster is the way to go.

    Fantastic experience

by HFM on 1/10/20Amalie Arena - Tampa

From the moment we stepped out of the elevator from our very convenient prepaid parking spot directly into “Thunder Alley”. Is was an experience like no other sporting event we have attended and that’s before the hockey game even started. The hockey game was also terrific. Highly recommend the experience

    great arena

by jillymac on 12/31/19Amalie Arena - Tampa

Had a great time attending a hockey game. Great arena, clean, friendly staff, easy access and close parking options. Would definitely not hesitate to attend another game or any event at Amelie arena. I purchased wheelchair seating and found it to be easily accessed no problems navigating to our seats or to restrooms. Had fun, can't wait to go again. Temperature a little cool for hockey game, definitely recommend bringing a sweater or jacket.
